If you have ever been walking through the store and thought you saw someone talking to himself. Maybe you even did the more embarrassing thing and thought they were talking to you and talked back, when come to find out, they were actually on their Bluetooth! Everybody talks about Bluetooth these days. I guess in reality, everybody talks "on" Bluetooth these days. But what is it?
Bluetooth, in its essence, is simply a wireless connection between two devices. It can connect all kinds of devices, including cell phones, computers, car stereos, and headsets. I can be used to data between these devices, whether that data is actual files or audio.
It was created in 1994 by Ericsson in the hopes that it would become the standard for connecting all kinds of devices. In fact, that is where the name came from. Bluetooth is a variant of a Danish name of a king in the 10 century who brought many small kingdoms together as one.
It is very simple to connect devices, and most cell phones and computer come with it installed. The technology itself could be compared to the technology in your remote control at home, although that technology is typically only one way, whereas Bluetooth technology is two-way. However, the concept is the same. Your remote control is simply sending data to your television wirelessly.
Bluetooth technology also has some serious advantages. It is a free connection, it allows for hands free talking in the car or on the go, and it uses no wires. The fact that no wires are involved makes file sharing simple.
One little known use of Bluetooth technology is known as tethering. With tethering, you can actually connect your phone to your computer via bluetooth and use your phone's data connection to connect to the internet. This is a great option when there are no Wi-Fi hotspots around. Now that many phones have 3G connections, the internet can actually have a decent speed when connected. Be careful when trying this, though, as some wireless carriers charge extra for that kind of connection.
Bluetooth also has its shortfalls as well. One is the extremely short range of the technology. It depends on the devices being connected, but they usually won't work after even getting a few feet apart. In addition, if your device, such as your computer or car stereo, does not already have it installed, adding Bluetooth technology can be seriously expensive.
In addition, in my experience, connections of this type can be sporadic. The technology has not been around long enough to be refined, and it still has a lot of glitches, so don't be surprised f you have trouble connecting a device or keeping it connected from time to time.
However, when it does work, it is a great asset. I am using it now with my Bluetooth headphones to be able to listen to music and talk on the phone while writing this article! If you want some cool gadgets that help you be more productive, and don't mind dealing with some glitches here and there, go invest in some Bluetooth technology today!
