I've been thinking about doing a really cool HAL 9000 mod. As it is right now I'll just work on the case cuz I have no money for hardware. I think I may also build a chair like one from the movies. It may turn into a HAL 9000 desk for all the stuff I want to do. At a minimum it's gonna be in a cube server case.

The reason for the elctrochromic glass thread is because HAL 9000 did not and would not have a window in my oppinion, but the internals and cooling deserve to be seen. So I thought of this as a good way to do it. Plus, that glass would have that futuristic look that the movie 2001 was looking for. here (http://www.lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/Lab-RD100-awards-2004.html) is where you can see the glass in action. (This link actually works)

For the cooling theme I was thinking "The cold of space." The CPU and both the GPUs would be cooled by peltiers and would never get above freezing hopefully. The liquid cooling would be in black tygon. I've also been trying to find a way to get cold air to blow out the front of the case, showing off how cold it is. My only concern with that is the dewpoint, I don't want condensation forming in my PC. I also want the case to show off the silence of space and produce almost no noise (none if possible).

I want to have fibre optics for simulated stars on the inside and on the outer right side of the case. I also want the right side to have a painting of the sun, earth and moon, like in the opening sequence of the movie.

The front would have a HAL 9000 model that possibly could have a Logitech Orbit Cam in HAL's eye (I'll have to see how that works).

On the inside behind the elctrochromic plexiglass (or whatever I figure out) would be a diorama or model of the moon when they excavate the monolith. The monolith would actually be a modded 60 gig iPod video. I would square it off with bondo and paint it to look like the monolith from the movie. There would be little poeple standing under it like in the movie.

The res for the water cooling would be Dave after he is reborn by the monolith and is a fetus floating through space.

Anyways, my ideas aren't set, and I have no money for hardware yet. I think I will start on the case and if it looks good I will maybe try to get some sponsors.

Anyways, tell me what you think.

That sounds really cool, and i dont even know what Hal 9000 is, lol

I don't know anything much about peltiers. But if they attract condensation perhaps you can angle your MB so that water can drip off in to a safe location.

It's not the peltiers I'm worried about with water. I know how to insulate them. I'm more worried if I have some sort of small A/C unit blowing cold air through the case and out the front.

omg. i just felt another gray hair pop in.

Rent this movie 2001: A Space Odyssey (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/).

HAL was the onboard AI computer. He develpoed a glitch and started killing the crew.
its rather boring compared to today's movies but its a cultural refernce point for a lot of things (kinda like star wars was 10 years later)

Yeah, if you look up HAL 9000 on wikipedia, there is a big list of refences that are made to HAL in pop-culture today. Kinda like Soylent Green . . .

Anywyas, it is boring, and the book is about a billion times better, but the short of it is that HAL is pretty much the fastest computer ever. So, of course, what I am going to choose as a theme?

Sounds pretty wicked. Why not cook something up in Sketchup? Easy to use and free ;)

I was just thinking about that, actually. So it is funny that you bring it up.

For the HAL eye, u could strip down the webcam and put red LEDs around it.

I was thinking for the HAL eye to definately be a replica first and, if I can, incorporate the webcam.

Sketchup is odd. I'm so used to Autocad, Rhino, and Solidworks that it just throws me. (I don't have the other programs anymore, btw, or else I wouldn't even bother with sketchup.) It has a lot of good features though.

Here is what I've done so far. I know this will seem ridiculous, but I am going to draw all the parts and then put the whole thing together.

Here is the radiator. I want to have three.

And the pic of the real thing. ThermoChill HE120.3

That is going to be one wicked mod, but you know that already. And don't forget to add a nice 2001/2010 sound scheme to it, it's gotta have those. :)

I'm definately going to have HAL say, "Good evening Dave. everything is running smoothly, and you?" instead of the windows startup sounds. I'm not on other stuff, so I am way open to suggestions.

Here's yer sounds.

"I feel much better now, I really do" -Recycle Bin maybe?
http://www.palantir.net/2001/tma1/wav/better.wav

"Daisy..." -Shutdown sequence, gotta be.
http://www.palantir.net/2001/tma1/wav/daisy.wav

"Are you sure you are making the right decision" -device disconnected
http://www.palantir.net/2001/tma1/wav/decision.wav

"Well, I don't think there is any question about it. It can only be attributable to human error. This sort of thing has cropped up before and it has always been due to human error." -Lots of uses.
http://www.palantir.net/2001/tma1/wav/error.wav

"Dave...my mind is going...I can feel it...I can feel it."
http://www.palantir.net/2001/tma1/wav/feelit.wav

etc etc etc...

Grab a whole buttload of 'em from this site.

I've used all these in sound schemes on previous rigs, they're great.

Well... I'm not finished yet but I've been working on a HAL mod myself...

https://home.comcast.net/~gulp35/computer/hal9000.htm

I decided to go with a Rackmount case myself... more monolith like... and I was planning on making my own set of memory modules to go along with it as a wall hanging, at first... then my wallet slapped me...

good luck on your project (i love the idea of adding scenes of the movie to it)

Can you elaborate more on your use of the Ipod as the monolith?

wow, 3 ThermoChill HE120.3 units AND peltiers? i cant wait to see that setup. i also cant wait to see hwo this turns out. thought i mgiht as well throw in my 2 cents and suggest using the quote "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." for error messages.

EDIT: BTW, is it just me, or does HAL sound a bit like Gene Wilder on Valium?

MY biggest problem is that I don't have money. Does anyone know how to get sponsors?

I'm not completely sure how I would do the iPod yet. I know that an iPod and the monolith are roughly the same shape. I would probably mod the iPod to look more like the monolith and then mod a mounting dock into the bottom of the case where I would do a moonscape diorama type thing (like in the movie where they find it on the moon's surface.)
