Hello everyone,

With the Modyssey having a stroke of bad luck with logistics and lasercutted plexiglas arriving broken to pieces and with the biggest LAN Party of the BeNeLux approaching very quickly, I decided it was time to do a special build.

With Star Wars up in my all time favorite movies and the IMPERIAL AT-AT being one of my all time favorite models from the series, the idea had been circling my brain for quite some time. I asked around in the SCIFI OCD group if there was anyone who had access to a 2010 HASBRO IMPERIAL AT-AT that i could buy, but unfortunately noone had one and buying it from Amazon or Ebay was just crazy expensive.

Untill I got the email that changed my universe for ever. I could aquire a AT-AT for roughly the price of a Coolermaster Cosmos II, about half what I had to pay before. A mini-ITX was soon scored after and the build could commence !

So what have we got ?

An IMPERIAL AT-AT, i7 2600k, Zotac Z68 Wifi-a, CPU GPU, Mosfet and NB/SB Waterblocks Crucial SSD, 2 x 240 Radiator and a XSPC Pump. Around 250 pics, 30 minutes of rough video of the build that I need to edit and a whole list of small stuff I need to do in the last days.

I will be posting a update on the work involved every day for the next 2 weeks or so.

Hope you like it!

Here is the main body. I had to get a lot of stuff out of there to make room for the mini ITX board.

With the interior out of there I could get a better view on how the fit the hardware.

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07253.jpg?w=640&h=

The location of the reservoir was quickly found. The space was exactly 60mm. I was expecting to have to restore the model a lot here, but i found a very nice 60 mm res that fitted perfectly.

The inside of the leg. I needed to fit a lot of wires, cables and tubing in there as I wanted NO visible cables !

Hi all, here is another update of the work that I had to do for the AT-AT!

With the hood removed I could start thinking on how I would mount (and cover the non attractive parts) of the hardware!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07294.jpg?w=640&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07295-e1333999653987.jpg?w=370&h=

Had to cut out the middle section of the models interior baseplate without messing to much with the fixation points that provided its structural strength.
Cut away to much and it would not be capable of supporting the hardware.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07297-e1334000005495.jpg?w=370&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07300.jpg?w=640&h=

Replaced the frosted plexi with a piece of UV red I had laying around. This will fit better into the overall lighting scheme.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07307-e1333999806940.jpg?w=370&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07308-e1333999845433.jpg?w=370&h=

Playing around with the location of the pump !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07301-e1333999706475.jpg?w=370&h=

This looks like an easy job but actually took a couple of hours getting it to fit exactly with no luight from the interior shing through on the sides, the hood needed to to fit perfectly and the pump had to be taken apart to fit into the hole in the vertical piece of plexi. Must have done 50 test fittings in total.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07349-e1333999860336.jpg?w=370&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07350-e1333999873510.jpg?w=370&h=

One of the main design criteria was that it had to look original from the outside, so the pump had to be well inside the model for the backdoor to close. (unfortunately this also meant my GTX580 was 2 cm to long)
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07351-e1333999884882.jpg?w=370&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07353-e1333999915181.jpg?w=370&h=

This was the original idea, the hardware on that location was soon changed to the I/O plate!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07359-e1333999948921.jpg?w=370&h=

Well that was it for now !
Next update will have my first ever build video (let me know what you think!)

Hi all, here is another update of the work that I had to do for the AT-AT!

Started work on all the cabling that had to be extended through the legs and into the body for the pc hardware. The 2x240 radiators and PSU will come in the base.

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07391-e1334191874739.jpg?w=370&h=

Had to cut out a lot of plastic to be able to route all the cables through. But I had to do that again without compromising the structural integrity of the model asa AT-AT that continuously drop to its knees wont destroy any rebel bases soon!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07392.jpg?w=640&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07393-e1334191893506.jpg?w=370&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07394-e1334191915641.jpg?w=370&h=

Also had to route 2 x 3/8th Tygon tubing to and from the rads into the legs. This was a very tricky point. I do have some restriction in my loop now, but the cooling works beautifully!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07400-e1334191930837.jpg?w=370&h=

When all the wiring was done, I had to trace them all to be sure I wouldnt connect any of them incorrectly!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07572.jpg?w=640&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07573-e1334191946654.jpg?w=370&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07575.jpg?w=640&h=

All the cabling installed! What did I install in total:
2 X 6 Wire GPU Pwr
4 + 4 Wire Mobo Pwr
24 Wire ATX Connector
4 Wire Molex
HDMI
USB2.0
CAT5e
2 x 3/8th Tubing
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07577-e1334191968170.jpg?w=370&h=

Also installed a little fan, its all watercooled (except for the RAM) But having some airflow is never a bad thing!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07596-e1334191984847.jpg?w=370&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/making-progress.jpg?w=640&h=

The connection to the base. This way it can move around the base a little but is still firmly attached (this is actually one of the first thing I will change; get a full modular psu)

TLHarrell
04-12-2012, 08:29 PM
The one you don't like the way the wiring comes out. The spot you cut is an easy fix, and won't be in an easily seen location.

Can't wait to see what you do with the paintjob.

ASPHIAX
04-13-2012, 05:39 AM
Ah, yess, I thought you had found a error in the wiring itself! LOL
Yes the spot is easily fixed with a piece of styrene and some cement.
I have come to the conclusion that I am NOT capable of airbrushing.
I can do airpainting, like one nice coat of the same colour, but the artistry behind airbrushing like the cases from BLUEHORSESTUDIO's Biohazard and the new Iron Man case is just soo far away. It will take me a couple of hundred hours practise to do something decent, I can build 3 new cases in that time! So I will most probably outsource that work.

xr4man

with as much as we all like to do it all ourselves, there's sometimes that one skill that you just don't have. single color painting for me too!

TLHarrell
04-13-2012, 10:22 PM
Well, you could try doing a two color base, then do thinned washes. It's rather easy. First basecoat is a little darker than your final. Use coarse sea salt as a mask for the second color. Drop it in place to simulate worn, chipped paint. Spray it slightly with a water mist and allow to dry. Then airbrush your final color coat.

Drybrushing: Take a highlight color you want to use over a darker color. Use a fairly wide brush. Fill the brush, then knock off most of the paint on a paper towel. The brush should end up barely sticky. Scrub over the areas you want to highlight. The slight amount of paint will attach to the edges and high parts.

Washes: Get some oil paint. Brown and black work best, but for your model a dark blue would also be good. Get some Testor's brush cleaner. Add a little bit of paint to a lot of cleaner. Brush this down the sides of the model with a wide brush. Allow it to sit in cracks and depressions. Make the model nice and streaky.

Some pretty simple processes to try out. They really add to the depth and detail of a paint job.

TLHarrell
04-13-2012, 10:25 PM
And if you have any questions about any of those processes, let me know and I'll work up a demo for you.

xr4man
04-13-2012, 10:43 PM
that's mostly the same techniques i've read about with weathering model trains. but i never heard of the sea salt trick for paint chips, that's just cool. i would like to see a more in depth write up about that part.

TheGreatSatan
04-13-2012, 10:52 PM
I have thought of doing this several times, but always thought the tiny size would make it too annoying to work with

TLHarrell
04-13-2012, 11:07 PM
There are a variety of salt sizes. Coarse sea salt would be best at his scale, but some table salt can be thrown in too. There are also other masking mediums as well.

Another option is to pre-shadow under the paint. Airbrush black along panel lines. It will show through the final paint coats.

ASPHIAX

Hey! Thanks for the tips!
I have messed up the EURISKO with airbrushing so I am extremely carefull now. (although this is hard plastic and the EURISKO was made of depron)
I was planning on making panels on the base that will be preshaded. This is a simple enough technique for me now. But I am talking to an airbruish artist that maybe wants to do the real work.
I am practising every now and agian though, so if you could do a demo of the techniques you are talking about, that would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all, here is another update of the work that I had to do for the AT-AT!

With the Most of the routing work for the legs and reservoir work done, I could start on the base. The idea was to have the radiators, PSU, fancontroller, flowmeter, UV strip and media bay in the base as that would not fit inside the body.

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/254378594653520.jpg?w=640&h=

Had a couple of pieces of mesh left over from the EURISKO. Thats why i keep telling my wife, never throw away anything ... And why i got so much crap scattered across my workspace , lol

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/254378627986850.jpg?w=640&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07580.jpg?w=640&h=

The whole base is going to be covered with pieces of styrene.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07581.jpg?w=640&h=

Cut ou the letters by hand, could have gotten a lasercutter to do it more precise but I just like this work !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07578.jpg?w=640&h=

Glueing it all together, another job for my trusted fret saw. It weighs 40 pounds !

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07583.jpg?w=640&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07621.jpg?w=640&h=

Damn it. Red UV plexi has the tendency to go pink.
Also the styrene is not lightproof enough so you can see the plexi through it.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07355.jpg?w=640&h=

Fixed it with some Aluminum tape !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07356.jpg?w=640&h=

I really needed to get some more red into the base, luckily I had this rgb strip laying around.

Wiring , wiring , wiring ...
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07587-e1335084396283.jpg?w=370&h=

Ah that looks better ...
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07590-e1335084936883.jpg?w=370&h=

Finally I could get started on soldering all the connectors back. I am so hoping I labelled it all correctly ...

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07625-e1335084459591.jpg?w=370&h=

I could not use screws to mount everything correctly in place as that would be visible on the top side of the base, so I had to resort to an old disney trick ... TAPE IT !!!

The final result ... Well almost, the connecting tube between the rads has been cut in 2 and a flowmeter has been placed to make sure I had adequate flow.

Gotta love them enermax fans, they arent the most quiet around but they sure do look pretty. Sort of like a generator ..
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07638.jpg?w=640&h=

And with the base almost done, I could start on the body side soldering and placing of the hardware !

Great job with fitting those boards in there. Looks like it just barely makes it in.

Yeah it could not be 3 mm wider or the doors of the ATAT could not close anymore!

Thanks for the support, will update the log as soon as possible with the last pictures and video.
Hope to bring finish the Modyssey and bring a new build soon!

Hi all, here is the final update of the work that I had to do for the AT-AT!

Started work on the laser assembly for in the head. The head was well designed with multiple layers , hats off to the people at HASBRO !!!

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc076731-e1336088916252.jpg?w=640&h=

I had to remove the leds that were in the lasre cannons and drill holes for the laser ligtht to get out !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07676.jpg?w=640&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/527256_265128890245157_100002441441083_599975_2062 683748_n.jpg?w=640&h=

The lasers had to be taped down and calibrated to fit exactly through the holes and not deviate to much when aimed at the wall. Cant have them pesky rebels escape cause we cant aim properly !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07678-e1336088930474.jpg?w=640&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07680.jpg?w=640&h=

Installed a couple of red leds to light up the front window
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07684-e1336088952724.jpg?w=640&h=

I use a TSOP 1838 IR receiver to analyse the output of a old remote (from a broken hdmi switcher) and program the arduino to shoot the lasers at different patterns.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07686-e1336089569389.jpg?w=640&h=

Found a nice place to store the Arduino also.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07693.jpg?w=640&h=

Last electrical check, yes everything works, now lets install the hardware and connect the watercooling stuff.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc076602-e1336089450932.jpg?w=640&h=

Filling station. The res I use to fill it up is on the top. Cause the input of liquid is directly in front of the pump, it wont run dry. Only thing was the air inside the system. Took a while before everything got out.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc076612-e1336089440781.jpg?w=640&h=

And there we have it, fully filled up and operational.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc076622.jpg?w=640&h=

OH NO !!! I had to change out a fitting cause it was leaking and during that some liquid got trapped inside the aux 12v connector of the motehrboard. When the case was upright it didnt short anything. When the case was on its side ... IT DID !!!
So long Motherboard, CPU and GPU !!!!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/short.png?w=640&h=

So with 2 days left before the LAN party it was stress time !! Had to remove all the affected hardware and replace with new.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07694-e1336088999721.jpg?w=640&h=

Hmm, which one was the broken one again ... DAMN !!!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/533448_265129796911733_100002441441083_599978_1484 80218_n.jpg?w=640&h=

And test out if everything worked again ... Luckely it did !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/dsc07695-e1336089017340.jpg?w=640&h=

But after all the stress and driving around the country to get the exact parts I needed, with 2 hours left before the beginning of the LAN party I could relax. Its finished !!!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/atatii.jpg?w=640&h=

Now one last big job, how to get it to the party ... The same technique Luke used to trip one over, I used to keep it steady ... LOL
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/529151_266289276795785_100002441441083_48690220_21 0380787_n.jpg

At the party some final adjustments (a piece of plastic inside the PSU kept touching the fan causing a terrible annoying high pitch sounds)
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/1-e1333784787545.jpg?w=640&h=

But there it is, I made it !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/2-e1333784775738.jpg?w=640&h=

http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/5.jpg?w=640&h=

Now back at my house, I am redesigning my office. I have changed the hardware layout a little. The GPU is out and replace with 3 x 2 Tb HDD (just barely fitted) and its functioning as my NAS ! Probably one of the few watercooled NAS out there ...
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/room-ii.jpg?w=640&h=

With the USS EURISKO and the AT-AT my office got a upgrade !
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/539922_363752427016049_331417866916172_949305_8569 88116_n.jpg

And that was it ! Look here fior the full highres picture log of the appereance at the lan party "The Party 10" (http://asphiax.wordpress.com/2012/05/05/imperial-at-at-at-the-party-10/)
I will be covering the base with styrene and maybe do some airbrushing to liven up the exterior of the AT-AT so keep posted for updates !

Hope you enjoyed the build as much as I did and I am already working on the next one !

Nice office! Also, great to see it done! I love the video card riser and the way the WC tubes are routed. It just looks so good. I'm drooling. I don't even like Star Wars (anymore because of the new movies and awful edits to the old ones).
