A UPS mod would be sweet. Just be VERY careful not to touch the inards. It could still have a charge from testing. Even though the battery is 12v, it's boosted to 120v, just like an outlet in your wall. One zap and you could die. So, just warning you guys;), Be careful.:)
xmastree
05-29-2006, 07:54 AM
Yeah, UPSs are dangerous, even when unplugged. The first thing to do when you remove the cover is disconenct the battery. Either by removing the fuse or pulling off a wire. Then turn it on and that ought to drain whatever is left in the circuits. Then it's almost safe.
The problem with batteries is that you can't turn them off. They store a huge amount of energy. With AC, when it's off it's off. With DC, the batteries are just waiting for a chance do discharge...
Be careful.
FWIW I used to work on systems containing 56x12V lead acid batteries in series. You have to respect that kind of power, or else it'll kill you.

I think it would be difficult if not nearly impossible to actually make it look like a Winnebago, so...
http://i3.ebayimg.com/04/i/07/4b/10/26_3.JPG
Should I just buy a winnebago and chop it up, then reassemble it around the UPS?
If the dimensions are right. You might also consider making the windows look into the ups.
A model would be easier than hand crafting it.

Alrighty let's get started. I gutted the Winnebago.
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/3756/seats8ph.jpg
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/7223/rusty17bn.jpg
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/8691/rusty25jl.jpg
I opened the top.
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/8613/plan16az.jpg
And dropped in the UPS. It's a perfect fit as far as length and width, but height.....
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1693/plan26nl.jpg
When I measured it before I assumed that the height of the winnebago was the same on the inside as the outside. But I never really considered the bottom.
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/6993/plan39cg.jpg
The inside is just 17cm
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/660/plan44qx.jpg
The UPS is 22cm
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/2166/plan58bn.jpg
And the outside of the winnebago is 22cm....
http://img302.imageshack.us/img302/1047/plan68am.jpg
I could fabricate some kind of shell with the wings attached that could go on top to cover the top of the winnebago. Or pull out the bottom and set it lower. What to do?
I rented the movie too.
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/566/movie2vd.jpg
wow. Looks like alittle fabrication may be in order. Shouldn't be that hard though. And it will be well worth the time. Keep it up TGS.
I would say take out the bottom. It doesn't need to be able to move.

Lucky me, the bottom is attached with rivets. Which I've removed many times before.
http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/5794/rivetjh4.jpg
Once they were all out, I used a hammer and beat the bottom down to it lowest position (22cm).
http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/3055/pushedlt9.jpg
Now it looks like a monster truck.
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8761/tall1ri0.jpg
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/4758/tall2kc0.jpg
Next I pulled out the windows. Each side is one long piece.
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2455/windowset8.jpg
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5373/nowindow1ek8.jpg
Then the windshield.
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/470/windshieldhu8.jpg
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/1442/nowindow2gw1.jpg
I have the paint bought too. Cream and brown.
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/1411/creambrownvi5.jpg
I figure that I can cut out aluminum pieces to cover the open areas, then Bondo.
http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/6775/redrawjb5.jpg

HAHAHAHA this guy is funny. Why hasn't anyone commented on the size comparisson pics? With the UPS on top of the... ah forget it...
Yeah, good call with the bottom, what you could do is chop the tires in half so that the bottom of the case is completely flat, tires and all. This would save some of the winnebago theme, but it would also show that it's a case. I havent got a clue how to implement this idea, but if you like it I'll gladly take credit for the idea :D.
And mad props as always, can't wait to see the end of it all.

Same here I don't know why we modders love the look of primer on an toy rv (not to make your mod look bad or anything Satan)
I think it must be because whe you prime something, its giving you a blank canvas, to do what ever you want. Which is really what modding is all about.

I love this project.. I think it's going to be great.
You arent going to use those big tonka wheels on the finished project are you? The monster truck look is not so good IMO. My 2 cents.. I'm sure you could pick up something at "toys r us" with some better wheels to use, and you could tuck them into the wheel wells to appear more stock.
Gonna be the coolest UPS ever!
slaveofconvention
07-22-2006, 06:36 PM
If you're tryin to get images from the movies - stick the DVD into your PC and take some stills. As for the wheels - I think the monster truck look is just a lil wrong - is there no way you can refabricate the base so the wheels are attached to the sides instead of connected by an axle - sure - the bottom of the winnie would be touching the ground but it's not meant to be mobile - least then the wheels will still look right and you don't have to mess with the arches so much....
TheGreatSatan
07-22-2006, 08:47 PM
I know about the whole watching it on my computer, but I didn't feel like it. Also, it's not gonna look like a monster truck, I got it figured out. It's gonna look as close to the original as possible. One thing I can't change is where the "W" is. In the movie, it's over the back tire. On my Winny it's over the front. Oh well.
And I'm having problems with the paint; it's not sticking. After 3 coats, I applied painters tape on it to get ready to paint the "W" brown. It was on for all but 3 seconds when I pulled it up to straighten it and off came my 3 coats of paint!!!!!!!! What to do?
not to point out the obvious....but you did sand it before paintin right?
is it not sticking to the metal or to the primer? Did you use a metal primer? Clean the surface good enough? Maybe try sanding off all the original paint and then painting it.

Hey, TGS, I was looking at your site and saw your Matrix Mod for the first time today. I have to say that's an amazing peice of work-very well accomplished, professionally done, with a lot of great ideas well implimented along with a cracking paintjob. Hope to see more like that!
Sorry to hear about the paintjob giving you trouble: If i was you, what i'd try and do is strip everything down to the bare metal, prime it, then start again. What Metal is the thing made from?
Good luck.

slaveofconvention
07-24-2006, 04:45 PM
Bare metal can be a real PITA to get a good grip on. If you want it right, I'd suggest popping into your local independent bodyshop and ask them if they'll etch prime it for you the next time they're etch priming something. Couple of things you need to know about etch tho - once it's on, you have between 2 and 24 hours to get the next coat or two on (of "normal" primer) - less than 2 hours, you'll lose the etch qualities, more than 24 and it'll be like metal - nothin to grip onto. The etch primer is very aggressive stuff and actually eats into the metal so you get a REALLY good base to paint on.
If that isn't an option, try this way, it isn't AS good but it's pretty good. Get some standard paint thinner and completely strip every trace of paint from the body. Just use a rag cloth, it'll all wipe off with a lil time and effort. Once thats done, make sure its super-clean and apply about 6 coats of primer. The important thing is this. Apply VERY VERY thin coats. In fact, it shouldn't even be a coat at all - the first 2 or 3 should be dustings of primer and, contrary to "normal" painting techniques do NOT sand before the first coat of primer AFTER the dustcoats - do not sand the dustcoats at all. Once you have 2 or 3 on, you should have a decent base - the next coat of primer you put on, treat as if it's the first, with a very light sand. You don't need to really worry about leaving a key for the next coat - the thinners in the primer will actually eat into the previous coats and get their own grip on the surface/paint.
By the way *grin* I work in a bodyshop so altho I don't do the painting, I have a pretty good idea of what goes on....

I have to admit to having one of these as a kid. I remember it was some light metal (not sure, things that long ago are fuzzy). I also remember this yellowish greeninsh primer I used in the navy that would stick to _anything_ and bond directly with the metal (you would have to remove some of the metal to get it off). Not sure of the name, but I will look it up. It would even bond with corroded aluminum and provide a base for filler. Once you paint it, it becomes one with the paint too.

sweetness. so i have a question for you regarding the ligting. your going to need voltage supplies of 5 and or 12 volts. i thought everything inside a ups would be bigger then that seeing as it is dealing with wall current. where do you intend to find these voltages?
Airbozo
08-28-2006, 11:17 AM
FYI in one of the ups' I tore apart there are several different voltages to use. If I remeber right there is even a clean 12v, 5v, and 48v signal on the monitoring board.
Cannibal23
08-28-2006, 12:40 PM
awesome. i was planning to do a ups mod for a long time. i even got a few spare ups's to use incase it didnt work out so well. my big concern was where to get the voltage for the cathode tube and then where to put the darn thing. guess i should have used my head and looked or logicaly though that out. if its going to led's on the front to tell you how many minutes are left then its going to have all kinds of diffrent voltages. wonder how much of an impact stealing 12v from it is going to make on its internal system. like the one that detects a falut with the ups. guess i will have to go play now lol
Airbozo
08-28-2006, 12:54 PM
Seeing as how most of my mods are _always_ built for being upgradeable, wouldn't it be better to just plug a transformer into the regular plug and get your voltage from there?
Although with a ups it really does not matter since what usually need replacing are the batteries. If I remeber right, on one of my APC ups' there was even a lead to pull the different signals off of (battery level, load level, AC power...) APC even has cool software to monitor the ups using a serial cable. (as do all of the ups companies)

Good to see you are still going with this. Maybe when you are close to finishing it put a pair of tiny fluffy dice haning from the drivers mirror that would be so cool.
I don't think Cathodes draw to many amps it should be ok.

After a lot of time and breaks inbetween finishing Interceptor, I will complete this mod. But there's a change. The UPS I was going to use for this Mod is DEAD. I have no idea how. Anyway, I think I want to try to make a PC instead using a Mini ITX.
I did some testing today. I wired up my Epia M10,000 Mini ITX to an ITX sized PSU, a spare CD drive and a 30GB hard drive from an old Creative Nomad MP3 player.
http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/56/miniitx1dv3.jpg

Here's my ITX and my tiny HD
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/2662/miniitx3gh3.jpg
The BIOS don't show my HD or CD drive so I changed the cable twice and still nothing. I guess the actual mobo port is bad??
http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/5013/miniitx4bd7.jpg
I moved on to the front grill and added a fresh layer of bondo
http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/9361/newbondojh3.jpg
Then sanded.

Ironic that you were making a replacement case for your UPS, when I scooped the same UPS (which was dead) for it's case to use for a future mod. I spotted a dozen of them in a dumpster. I wonder if they're any good?
The BIOS don't show my HD or CD drive so I changed the cable twice and still nothing. I guess the actual mobo port is bad??
Also try booting up with just one drive attached. Then switch drives and try again. They might not like each other, and as stated, it might be their Master/Slave/Cable Select jumper settings.

most likely the batteries in these are toast. look in your city for a battery store and they should be able to provide replacements. i had the same problem with 3 large ups's that i picked up. they looked dead but when i changed the batteries... well now i got some good ups's. one question about modding this. is there an acctual 12 volt line inside there? i would love to mod out mine but i was concerned that seeing as its supposed to output wall voltage that i wouldent find a 12 volt line to use or that the ammount of power in this thing would cause some serious problems with added on devices. let allone the safety concerns.

For the last two days I've been working non stop on perfecting the wings. I've used bondo more than a dozen times in broad strokes and with a small pin to fill in all the tiny holes. use a filler primer to fill the small holes this is a common problem with bondo brand bondo. filler primer is really thick primer and will fill the tiny holes then wet sand and your good to go.

Hehe, put in back corner about 1 inch from the side and plug it in with just the cord hanging out. Then get some of that cheap wire sleeving from the auto store. Cover the cord with that painted white on top and slight brown on the bottom. It will look like the crapper cleanout.

Why not leave the Power Supply in the top pic location (in the middle of the winnie) and Mod the PS so you can extend the power plug and switch to the rear by the mesh I/O panel. I think it would be the cleanest look.
