With Fallout 3 Just around the corner I thought that it became time for an upgrade for my Fallout 2.0. Fallout 2.0 could run the first 2 Fallout RPG's with out problems. but since Fallout 3 is just a bit harder to process its upgrade time.

Lets make Fallout 2.0 into 2.1

this is how we remember this great(a least for me) Mod.http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2070/2265172208_8a1e1fec05_b.jpg

Currently its a:

[CPU] 4000+ AMD Athlon.
[RAM] 2 Gb DDR2 Kingston.
[GFX] NV 7600 GT.
[HD] Maxtor 320 Gb S-ATA 7200rpm.
[MB] MSI K8n Neo2 platinum.

But that is all to change in the coming month.

Lets take a quick overview of what I am planning.
*first the the 120 mm Rad is a goner.( it was/is positioned behind the bottom center front) it will be replaced by a 240gtx stealth radiator. not in the same location but over the bottom of the case. more info on this in future updates.
*some new hardware. ill let the pics do the talking.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3253/2774899175_cc74d6dae4_b.jpg
This GPU will stay stock. (meaning it will not be water cooled)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/2774893721_268f43c5b7_b.jpg
For those not Familiar with this MB. its mATX. why.... to make room for the radiator and his fans. on the bottom of the case.

*also ill be adding extra fans front and back. on the front will be some room now since the single 120 mm rad is gone. and on the back ill be cutting a hole special made for a 120mm fan.(coming from Vault-tec;))

I hope i got you on this small project. so stay close and be amazed.

Yours Cheron.

An Update.

I have thorn down the 'Old' Fallout 2.0. and started on some design features.

But first some history on Fallout. or the Aopen case it once was. I guess they don't make em anymore but its old fashion Steel (damn heavy those side panels).http://www.shopbot.com.au/i/2004/8/9135_160.jpg (Picture source: The Net)

It housed my first Own PC (I didn't have to share it with any one) back then it was on of the first Pentium III's. If i remember it correct clocked at a staggering speed of 800 MHz. can remember the grafix but they weren't that important back then. till that day I upgraded to an AMD processor It was an 1800+ I remember it like yesterday. I Upgraded together with an friend and his Proc. was the last one and i had to wait till the following day..... but time passes and you find out its was already time to upgrade I upgraded to an 2200+ I maxed out on the MB. Ram had grown to 1Gig and what did I know....

My rig needed an Upgrade.... Water cooling took foot.... and so i did.... in one terrible way... it looked like an mess but worked great i overclocked and I even bought an GF4600ti and water cooled it. times where great we went to LAN party's and even won somethings. people looked at my rig.... and where amazed with it. I found my place among them I am a Casemodder.

the last part started. I wanted to make something great. and so Fallout 2.0 was born. It was an upgrade have loved until now (actually I love it still).

But as I said earlier Time never stops and again its time to Upgrade.....

OK that wasn't meant to happen but if you are still here... Thanks for Reading.

Ill be making Fallout 2.0 into 2.1 as i told you all earlier. that means better.
But to make things better you have to understand them. my dad always told me. So in my turn i decided to tear Fallout 2.0 apart and make my self understand what i build years ago.(and kept running with repairs and replacement parts after that) enjoy the pictures.(sorry the are made with my Phone)http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3254/2779436606_1548d64190_b.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3148/2779441402_50a4c3b118_b.jpg
(^)I am going to clean that wire mess...I promise.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3054/2778590775_11ce9e37dd_b.jpghttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3179/2778587469_89383c33ef_b.jpg

And finally my first design change to this case... (just mock up)http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3204/2779444594_1b44b010ba_b.jpg

I hope you all like what you see...

Ok this is what i am going to do today..... as you can see I tore it down to the bone..http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3029/2781049482_d389aa9631_b.jpg

I am going to clean the glue from the top where the Bottle caps used to be....
So I have room to draw some Air vents....
don't worry ill keep that Bottle cap reference to Fallout in. but more subtle this time.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3022/2781051194_50bf67a4d8_b.jpg

And Also Ill start cutting the back for the fan is showed earlier.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3257/2780192361_ce52fe9262_b.jpg

Ill be back later today to show results. I really want to get this done.
yours Cheron.

Cheron

yes I have thought of mounting the Res on top. but since it isn't in the way (and doesn't block airflow being rounded as it is) ill keep it on the back.

For the vents on the top there wont be Fans just openings with some mesh..

Like your Lexa the Air intake will be primary from below trough the Radiator. also there will be air moving in from the front where the old Radiator used to be.

So that brings us to 3X 120 mm intake fans and just 2 (one being the PSU fan) exit fans. with this in mind ill just vent the execs air trough the top.(with out a Fan. hot air will raise any way)

I have a new picture.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3123/2780589445_fc33129cd2_b.jpg

Ok I have some Pictures.

The vents in the top panel. there will be mesh in those holes.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3073/2784400944_23aea3c0a9_b.jpg

Two extra holes in the back. both will be covered from within, with some mesh.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3069/2784403336_13cdd47085_b.jpg

I also cut the hole for the 240 radiator. as you can see here, I primed it with the base coat.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3032/2784408596_b83ed3e156_b.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3263/2784406004_d70c6d2056_b.jpg

here you can see the MB tray all painted satin black.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3073/2783556105_e08292904b_b.jpg

That is all I can show you today. for now I cant go on have to wait for parts.
But I'll be fabricating some smaller parts in the coming days.

I have been sleeving a lot of cables in the past 2 days, also I have received my package of Watercooling parts(but no pictures of that yet).

I have been painting and Its getting a really old look atm(I will show that also later).

Now somethings I have pictures of. The Top panel.
The 2 vents on the top the rear of the car is the front of the case.

The model car is my version of the in Fallout 2 featured Highwayman. all rusted and its to bad you cant see it in its full glory, I have also made the interior worn(with patched up parts) its really cool.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3217/2794249184_ea2531fe62_b.jpg

I have also installed the water block on the MB. here are some pictures.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3277/2794254266_7dba09710b_b.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3104/2793406493_0a5fae50df_b.jpg

Did a test fit, the radiator in combination with the pump.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3205/2793401159_ca6e4789b9_b.jpg

That's it for now.

An Other update.

I have started installing all kinds of things only to discover I needed some space in certain parts of the case. so I had to relocate em. but with that done I thought maybe there are more things that do not fit. so started to test fit everything except the front panel(will change that front with certain parts in the coming days). but any hows.... some pictures.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3275/2799899955_7fb360d53d_b.jpg

This is also something I have done, cut short all the bolts. So I could use those domed bolts

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3021/2799903253_172e416f49_b.jpg

This is the top vent I have been talking about. The Hard drive will be seen trough this vent. You can also see some scratches I have made on the top of the case(first applied a layer of bondo and scratched that before it hardened). This will help me with the weathering of the case. The last 2 bolts near the back of the case are dummies only there for aesthetic reasons(they wont stay silver colored. but if you like it i might consider leaving em that way.)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3271/2799910503_6c1a5959cc_b.jpg

And some closing shots for this post.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3018/2799906925_6da7662ca1_b.jpg

On that last photo you can see I haven't cleaned the edges of that piece of Acrylic and i wont be doing that, since I am going to whether it. Like I did on the front.(when it was Fallout 2.0 (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2135/2265173968_15d03040bd_b.jpg))

That was it for today.

Very small update. This is what I have done this evening. I made some expansion slot covers(or what ever the name) from some mesh. just take a look.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3154/2803166077_34aef0bd96_b.jpg

P.s. It looks like its likely becoming 3.0 instead of 2.1. this thing is getting better than I anticipated.

I have been Aging the Case in the last 2 days and I might say it getting there. unfortunately I don't have pictures of that progress yet, but I want to give you a little teaser. Remember this Fan controller....

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2135/2265173968_15d03040bd_b.jpg

The Blue back light didn't fit the theme and it never really did but i fixed that. I gave the back light that early 80's watch back light feel, and its green this time... picture later today.;)

To Both of you.... that was actually the "old" situation. that picture was only for the purpose of showing you the "old" fan controller. which is soon to be known as the FanBoy 2200 (as "Vault-tec made it" like the PipBoy 2000).

Some pictures.

I hope to finish this Fan controller in the next two days. With that update I will also show the weathering of the case it self.

You all have to wait a little longer for weathering pictures. but I have something to show you all.

I have been busy with photoshop.

I has been a wile since I actually posted something about the case it self. I promised you all the new Weathering of this case(with out the front and side panels). so enjoy the pictures.

First some in progress pictures.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3151/2872457560_d9cd7fc84b.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2083/2871625885_636a5ba7ef.jpg?v=0

And this is the End result.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3161/2872462110_1f8fc4895e_b.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3175/2871631745_5326602775_b.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3063/2871630337_91093d9079_b.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3001/2872460540_046f2b52bf_b.jpg

With that done it was time to bring the hardware Home..... To bad I don't have pictures of me installing the hardware, but I would like to Say I got cough up installing it and thus forgot to take pictures. but with no further a due I present Fallout 2.1 with hardware at home.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3026/2871632419_a1e5e5180f_b.jpg

This picture was taken just after the first 24 hours of leak testing. and i am pleased to say No leaks. (but I am testing still and No leaks. an other 12 hours to go and ill call it Safe)

And here a little teaser The "OLD" side panel on the "NEW" case. after thinking about using it as it is with new paint i decided to modify it further so it will match even better.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3129/2871634205_ca2098fd21.jpg?v=0

So next up will be:

Soldering cables.
Install lights.
Make the Radiator fan "Cover"
Make the designed stickers.
Add the stickers to the fans.

That will finish the core of this Mod.
After that:

Motherboard side panel.
Windowed side panel.
Front of this Build.

And with that said ill wrap it up for this Update.

Yours Cheron.

Dude, great mod!!! I was digging around and found some images that might add to the inspiration. I was a bit disappointed in the depth of Fallout 3 but I loved the atmosphere, very well conceived. Take a look at these...

Someone built a Pip-boy 2000:
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/jdbnsn/fallout/111111-1.jpg

Evidently you can buy a Pip-Boy 3000 clock which if torn down would fit pretty nicely in your case design...
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/jdbnsn/fallout/pip_boy_3000.jpg

This is off topic, but I just found some software that changes your PDA into a pip-boy! How cool is that?
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/jdbnsn/fallout/pipboy2000.gif

And one thing that I think you should really try to work in there is a bobblehead or sticker of everybody's favorite icon......Pip-Boy!

Thanks For the reply's. first of all i have been having loads of trouble with this Main Board. and i finally have a replacement. its still the Xfx 8200 but this time it is a disease free one. So Its about time I Finnish this Build.

So here is a small list of things o want to do Before i call this one done.

Add the 8800 GTX from Warlock into this Build. and add it to the water loop.
this asks for an extra Rad (an 120 GT stealth) which I'll mount to the front fan.

Mold the new front of this case. Also ill be replacing the fan controller with an new one.
Add dust covers to the fans.
Add Vault-tec logo to the motherboard side Side panel.
Add New case feet. (or not but i would like better ones)
Remake windowed side panel.
final weathering

I know I had great Sticker Ideas. but I wont be covering the the Fans and rad so they will stay like this. Also the sticker for the fan controller will be forgotten since I will be using a different one.

I hope you feel updated. thanks for reading and expect an update in 2 to 3 weeks.

Yours Cheron.

And some dust filters to the bottom of this case (it needed them)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3266/3243963569_c6ce0cd492_b.jpg

Next thing on my agenda is the Windowed side panel. It was like this.....http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3129/2871634205_ca2098fd21.jpg?v=0

But you can wave it away as its currently in almost the same condition as the front of this case.... but sadly no pictures.

a short list of what to expect in upcoming updates.

Side panels. (both)
Front.
GFX card support.

First of all Thanks to you all for sticking with me on this project.

I am really proud. making the front page with Fallout 2.1. it has done me good.
I have been away for some time and as some of you may know I have been "sick" in the past years but since its slowly going better with me. I am starting to work again as in the normal hours. but this leaves me battered in the evenings. so work on Fallout 2.1 is slow, but never forgotten.

I would like to thank this community for its support they have given on my projects. and in turn my projects kept me going.

I am just letting you all know its going to take some time but this project will see an finish. I want to work on it as much as i can my mind wants to but my body said no... for the past weeks.

when there is something to show. ill show it right away.

many thanks
Yours Cheron.

It has been a wile an I haven't done much in the past time. but I can show some things I did although not much fun I had the 8800gtx replaced with an other one since it had a very bad coil whine. just some pictures of that proceeder. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3336/3510695000_6380546bdc_b.jpghttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3376/3510697020_5354c87e0e_b.jpghttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3545/3510710522_7d05e32b75_b.jpg

I also replaced 2 of the 800 rpm fans with 1600 rpm fans to better handle the added temp load of the 8800gtx

an further addition to the case is a automatic fan controller. which can also power down the pc if needed. it has two digital sensors one for the CPU and one on the gfx card. also I added 4 analogue sensors to the whole. have a look.

@ The boy 4rm oz: That is correct its an Asus 8800GTX (it Coil whines even on the desktop but in Fallout3 or any 3d app. its really bad) I replaced it with an Asus 8800GTX which doesn't coil whine.

The first one didn't coil whine to bad in the beginning but it evolved to something really bad.

Any way some pictures of the original case I bought a wile back.

I have a day off tomorrow. ill be working on Fallout 2.1 for most of the day so I should make good progress tomorrow.

First up the side panels if I have extra time left ill be starting on the front.
While the current front panel reveals the DNA of the case. it wont be so for long. I will be squaring off the whole front to give it a more rugged look.

Yours Cheron.

Water block shorts you might be on to something ill have to look into that.(but i think it was my own fault like the first time.

Anyway I came in to tell you all, that I still plan on finishing it. even if it does not work(yet). Ill be dropping in a lighter GFX card since temps are way to high over 60 under load(CPU). This new GFX card will be air cooled like the first GFX card. also ill add a small fan(or two if I have room) to the NB those temps did soar to over 50 just before it died. I think that was my problem.

Any advice on what GFX card must be single slot since the radiator sits just below it

true... but still those gfx and cpu temp have been like this since the 8800gtx so ill be dropping it and if you say the 9800gt or the 8800gt are better than the 8800GTX I think you haven't had a real chance to compare them. I have them all installed since I started this build.

But any how the pump works fine and NB temps are Air-cooled temps.

On the 9800gt part. I have one right here. sold the 8800GT unfortunately since it ran more stable but the 9800gt will do fine after I modified the heat sink of the NB to active cooling. (this will some how look real fallout I guess)

thanks for all your support.

Yours Cheron
