I'm gonna be building a new computer soon, but one thing that I have been thinking of, should I wait for the DirectX 10 cards for Windows Vista and all that? I hear that some great technology is coming in the next year, so should I wait for now to build a computer?

i second that motion. waiting until perhaps next summer is the best move at this point. im very sure we're going to see another technological shake up around the start of 2007. we get vista, dx10 cards, and new processors from both sides. apparently something different (and better?) than conroe will be out in a year or so. i think some time next year is when amd is planning something too (new design and/or quad core, definitely 65nm). plus they just announced 4x4, which is like a gaming version of a dual processor server set up. i think the biggest thing is to let vista get seated first.

ill probably be waiting until the end of the summer next year. if you can keep your pants on and do the same, it should serve you well.

Vista is nothing more than XP 64 bit with some special features. They have removed everything that makes it worthwhile to upgrade.

thats not the point though. the point is that vista will create a drive for new hardware, which is worth waiting for. even if you dont go for vista, the subsequent hardware that will be available is still a big drawing point.

that and Live Anywhere is exciting. I think that Vista still has some neat features, even if they did strip out a lot of the coolest stuff a while ago.

Regardless of what you do, I gurantee it will be outdated as soon as you get it home.

And that is what i hate! By the time you have a great build, its outdated, not powerful enough... etc

I heard somewhere that they would be releasing DX10 drivers for the 7900GTX once vista is out. Is this true? I realy, realy, hope it is. Seriously. having just spend many hundreds of dollars on a 7900GTX, compatiable mobo, and psu, I do not want to find that this isnt true haha

Trust me when i say its out dated before it gets to the store shelf...

There is practicly no way to have a up to date system...

You also have to watch out for "rambus" products. New technology that doesnt catch on could leave you in a sticky situation.

If you wait, there's always going to be something new, then you have to wait for the price to drop, and by that time you're looking at something else new. Last time it was shader model 3, now it's DX10. The thing that's got most folks going now is PhysX cards. Will they catch on? I hope so because they have great pottential.

At the end of the day, the best tactic is to put it off until the very latest time: when you need that video card upgrade, of when you fry your computer.

I would agree with Dave, wait untill you just can't use your computer any longer and then buy something really nice. Also, I found that its best to be patient before buying parts, especially when new part generations and technologies are soon to come. Lastly, reading other reviews on the web can give you a heads up on something not worth the cash, there is always somebody who has tried it before you.

Yeah, waiting is good sometimes. But if you wait almost a whole year, then what? You find out about the new whatever thing and decide to wait longer. Eventually you can't wait any longer cuz your PC can barely even start up anymore.

The perfect time to upgrade. Suitable ambiguous to make it a time perfect for all.
