I have now completed my Antec 900 Revamp to my satisfaction even though I managed to completely screw up the PSU modifications with the end result of one dead brand new OCZ Modular PSU so it's time for me to do something with the Thermaltake Mozart TX case I picked up a few months back....

Without further ado, I announce Project: SAMCRO....

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/banner.png

I'm a huge fan of the FX TV series, Sons of Anarchy and as season 5 is going to kick off in about 6 weeks and I'd really like to get this done in time for the first episode due to air on September 11th 2012 - this is the first project I've ever taken on with any kind of deadline and to be honest, I already kinda expect to miss it but.... here goes....

First, the case....

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/001.jpg

The case is going to get 4 new tinted windows, and a full paintjob. I've got a half-litre of a Harley Davidson colour called Starlight as the main colour - it's a nice sparkly black and will make up the majority of the outer panels - tje back, base and inside will be going matt black - I have that paint to hand too....

I also bought an airbrushing template from ebay so I can paint the SOA reaper on the top of the case and this came in a total of five layers....

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/002.jpg|http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/003.jpg|http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/004.jpg|http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/005.jpg|http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/006.jpg

I've never done any airbrushing before so this will be a first for me... I also plan to airbrush the initials SAMCRO down the front panel to the left of the black mesh area - for that I bought a roll of frisk file and I'm going to have a mate cut me a stencil for that part in the font used in the show, specifically Carnavalee Freakshow (it may not be a perfect match fontwise but it's damned close). All of this will be done in white to stand out from the black everywhere else. I'm thinking about some other little accent pieces - guns, bikes, harley logo etc but I don't want to overdo it so I'm not 100% sure on that yet. Finally the Sons Of Anarchy text needs to go somewhere - at the moment I'm thinking either on top beside the reaper, or at the bottom of the front panel under the mesh - again, I'll mock it up and make a decision before I start chucking paint around....

I do have a couple more ideas but we'll have to see how time goes etc but I'm really looking forward to this mod, especially as I now have a permanent place where I can paint without having to ask mates for time in thier garages or fight with the weather in the garden...

There's one more item I need to find the money to buy, and thats an official SOA belt buckle....

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/buckle.png

I think this'll look almost perfect in the middle of the mesh area near the bottom - if I get it, I'll try to position it so there's a roughly even amount of black between the edges of the buckle and the curve at the bottom of the mesh....

Hardware on the inside - this is probably going to end up as my own main PC so it'll be getting the hardware in the Antec 900, namely an Asrock Extreme3 motherboard, 16GB of RAM, 8 core FX-8120 CPU and a couple of TBC video cards. The Mozart TX can also hold an ITX system in addition to a full ATX one so I may well also put my Atom based minecraft server into the case - if I have the patience to get it all out of the Antec Mini Skeleton it currently resides in (that was a major PITA to build - not sure I want to tear it to bits just yet).

Full disassembly of the Mozart TX prior to paint coming soon.....

Neat. I'll be watching.

And remember, airbrushing is 99% preparation just like any other spray painting. You just have more control. Plan your masking well, and the entire job goes super smooth. I especially love to use it for subtle shading and weathering effects.

Heh, I'm the prep pedant so no worries there - wash, dry, scotchbrite, panel wipe, tack cloth, and if it isn't perfect, do it all again!

I must have looked for 2-3 years, on and off for this case. When i found one, i drove about 80 miles round trip to get it too. Of course, 2 weeks later there was one available locally for about60% of the price but I couldn't justify two of them :p

Time to pull this beast of a case to itty bitty pieces....

First I took off the front panel, leaving the case looking a lot less pretty....

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/007.jpg

The back of the front panel is a real mess of cable - something that'll have to be tidied up a LOT when it comes to putting this thing back together....

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/008.jpg

The front panel came apart pretty quickly, although there were a LOT of screws holding it together...

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/009.jpg

The top and bottom of the panel came away and there's a tiny Chrome strip on the angle - I think I'll try to mask this off so I can keep it as a highlight - it'll break up the mass of metallic black pretty well I think

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/010.jpg

And the front panel itself, all nekkid!!

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/011.jpg

A closeup of the ports at the top of the front panel - two of them are for esata and a proprietory esata power connector - I don't use esata anywhere so these two holes will have to go.... IF the power connector had been more standard I might have left them for future use but as they stand....

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/012.jpg

Next came the doors - both sides of the case are virtually identical and each of them came apart in a small pile of pieces....

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/013.jpg

I bought some smoked grey acrylic so I'm going to try to replace the windows - it's going to mean drilling over 50 holes in the new panels so that'll take some care....

I mentioned before the case has ITX support too - that's a bit of a stretch to be honest - all there actually is, is 4 standoffs in ITX layout - there's no rear panel access or anything so the wiring here may be "interesting"

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/014.jpg

I got the rear I/O section out in one piece - nice and simple - just a couple screws...

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/015.jpg

And the 3.5" drive cages were even easier to remove...

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/016.jpg

And more nudity!!! The bare chassis...

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/017.jpg

My project Lobo ground to a halt when I realised there were quite a few parts missing - I'm going to make damned sure that doesn't happen with SAMCRO - so everything is bagged and labelled...

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/slaveofconvention/projects/SAMCRO/018.jpg

Tomorrow I hope to line the caravan I just bought with poly sheeting so keep all the dust and other crapola out - once that's done, I'll be in a position to start getting some etch primer and base colour on some of these bits....

Until next time :D

In the past I've borrowed space in bodyshops, painted in the ridiculously low garden shed, or out in the garden itself. Time to get something a little "better" arranged.... So I bought a VERY cheap caravan. It's been on my drive for a week or so now so I figured I should start making the change from camping comfort to painting practicality.

The van itself...

You may notice the missing wheel - that's no accident - my driveway is at all kinds of stupid angles so leveling the caravan has been a challenge. It still isn't perfect but it's now level enough that it'll work - in a week or so I may try to get it even more level....

Inside we have a decent size work area....

With lots of little cupboards, drawers and other storage space - ideal for all my paint supplies etc.

Next step is going to be to get rid of the last of the fabric areas (wonderful dust stores) and to line it with poly sheeting to make it as suitable as possible for painting - then I'll have to add something for ventilation/extraction and I should be good to go.....

It cost me about a quarter of what a shed the same size would have so I'm happy heh
