Once they dug through the patents that they acquired with the purchase of the Motorola mobile division, they felt they had to act. There has been a lot of back and forth over this an in the end Google decided to lob a nuke in the name of defense. Apple is bolstering itself to take on Google with the likes of the Samsung victory. Funny thing is, from what I have read, if Google wins, then the Samsung verdict will basically become null and void (although Samsung would have to show evidence of prior work or that the win for Google negates some of the patents that Apple sued over.

Funny stuff going on in the valley right now. This could get ugly, but if it sheds light on a broken patent system, then I am all for it. While I really dislike Apple, I wish they would use some of the money they spend suing people on R&D. It would be better for the industry as a whole if they actually started being hardware and software company instead of a marketing and litigious company.

+1

The whole system is stupid. It's moronic that people can patent human gestures and "talking to the TV to make it do things." There will be one company that patents 'wave left,' 'wave right' for volume or channels or whatever and then other companies all scramble for whatever is left over until you get butt wiggles, etc.

Software patents need to go away completely. Just go with copyright. If the code isn't stolen, but copies function, then it's fine. If the code duplicates function as well as tricking customers into thinking it's something it isn't, then you have copyright and brand as grounds to sue. There's no need for all these stupid patents.

This in a nutshell.

What pisses me off is all of this costs tax payers money just so the rich get richer. No one is really winning in this situation except corporations.
