View Full Version : 60GB SSDs?

Personally, I have to have at least 120GB of Solid State in any of my systems. Even my kids have SSD's and the laptop I just bought my in-laws got an instant upgrade to 240GB. Talk about a huge price upgrade for it!
Who here has not yet got one in their system?
BTW, I have three 60GB SSD's if anyone wants 'em! Post here to be entered. You must have at least 50 posts to qualify! I draw the winners next Friday, the 5th
I have 0 SSDs, and wouldn't mind one. It would either resurrect a laptop, or go into ModCron as a boot drive.

This pile O crap I'm using would be a waste of a good ssd so don't put my name in.
Just had to say it's pretty awesome having someone on the forum that give as much as you do TGS.

That would be the chink in my system's armor. I am still rocking an old 250gb 7200 RPM drive for my OS drive. takes forever to load up. Count me in! Thanks TGS!

I have an SSD in my gaming rig but I'd like to put one in my wifes rig. I'd also love a 512GB one for my server but I know that will never happen lol.
SSD.. RAID... DROOOOOOOLLLLLLL... I don't have one yet, but have had my eye on them.

i'm running a 120g ssd in my desktop and have a spare 120g one for my ibm 5150 htpc, but it's not installed yet.
my laptop is rocking a 64g ssd. i figured that since i'm not installing any games and i have my server for storage, i didn't need too much storage space on it. besides, if i do, i can just pop in a 32g sd card.
anyway, i'm not gonna miss out on a chance for more ssd goodness, so put me down.

I haven't made the plunge into SSD's yet. Mainly because I have been watching to see if there were any issues with longevity, and of course price. I would love to try one out, just haven't found a good enough deal on one yet.

I have a 120 that was in my wife's laptop for a little bit while I repaired her 600Gb spinning drive. Now I'm just waiting for a little money so I can put it into a HTPC built very quickly, in an ugly case. I sure wish I had money to make a great looking case, but I don't, so it will stay ugly for a long while.

Satan Claus for you too?
No, not for me. I have a really nice machine at home with three 24" monitors. At school, I have a not-as-good machine, but that still has an i7 2600, a 4870x2 and plenty of ram, and all that goes to a 28" monitor. My wife has a laptop that perfectly suits her needs. I have all the parts for a HTPC except a PSU. I should not be picky, but I've had my eye on a fanless 500W Kingwin PSU with really high reviews. So, yeah, I don't need a free computer and it should go to someone who really needs it. Really, I should be giving away a bunch of the extra stuff I have.
Speaking of which, I have my for sale thread (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25563), which is still populated with some crap I'd like to not have any more. If anyone can convince me why they should have it for free, I'll send it to them free as long as they cover shipping.

I don't have any SSD's.
I don't really need one, but if I tried to upgrade my laptop, I would have to get much larger ones since I am running 2 1tb drives and they are getting full.
To be honest I have not even powered up any of my desktop rigs in over 6 months and then it was to pull my resume and put it on my server.
On a side note: One of my customers uses 250gb SSD's in one of their appliances. We were just told that they are EOL'd and the only comparable upgrade are the 480gb SSD's. The kicker? The 480's are cheaper...

i think that as long as you do your research on how to set up a ssd properly, that they are quite reliable. i think the majority of the problems people claim to have are from improper setup.
i also read in an article not too long ago that with the 10000 write limit for each cell, if you were to write every single cell every day, it would take 8 years to ruin the whole drive.
although the math doesn't quite work out. oh well, whatever.
TheGreatSatan
09-28-2012, 04:34 PM
There really isn't any kind of setup. You plug in the drive and it works. I guess you can run a tweak utility, but many people don't
Samsung claims you can get 10 years out of their current drives

I don't have a single SSD in the house, and there's probably about 20TB of space between the various PCs, Laptops and the server - I have considered putting one in my HTPC purely for the noise levels - right now the HDD is the loudest item in there. As the HTPC backs up to the server automatically capacity isn't really an issue - I've seen the price of the 60's dropping below £50 for the first time so it may well end up on a future shopping list.

Are you asking for free stuff again? Cool. Really. Maybe you should get a job.

Everything I have touched this last year has gotten the SSD treatment a 240GB Pyro se for my laptop a 120GB Pyro for my friends netbook, 120gb Pyro for my arcade machine and my HTPC recently got a 120GB vertex 4 so glad I spent the extra $10 because I am going from pressing power to having the system up running with a movie in the movie browser extension for Windows Media Center in under 20seconds.
Unfortunately the family PC is lacking an ssd but rather has my steam HDD as an is drive and I'll be needing it back when I move back to a desktop PC.
Are you asking for free stuff again? Cool. Really. Maybe you should get a job.
Honestly, I'm looking for, and going to get one. But that's another discussion.
(Did have a summer job, but that's over.)
TBH, I didn't mean to sound like "gimme, gimme". Just saying "might as well have my name in the pot."

I have one Agility 3 60GB in an old laptop that performs well. Microcenter has 60GB Vertex R2's on sale for 40$, 30$ after rebate, but I haven't made the trip out to Cambridge yet. I could use one for my server, but for now I'll probably just use a spare laptop hard drive.

I have Corsair Force3 90GB SSD in my main rig, though I'm looking to upgrade to a 240/256GB in the near future (probably around Black Friday).
I'll soon be replacing the clickety-clacking hard drive in my mom's netbook, so I'll throw my name into the pot for one of the 60GB SSD's. It'd be a shock to an old Atom N450 system!

Yeah, nobody get me wrong, I'm still in for an SSD. I just don't need to enter Satan Claus. My birthday is coming up so I think I'll end up getting some money from my parents for the PSU I've been wanting.

Seconded on both accounts.
Also, as TGS said, nothing special needs to be done to install or use an SSD. You can tweak it if you are benchmarking but nothing is necessary. They are lightning fast out of the box.
There were some questions somewhere above this post, but my scrolling finger is a bit lazy today:
Their lifespans depend on both the number of bits and how many times each bit can be written to before failure. Unfortunately, many programs write to disk frequently and there's nothing that can be done about that except possibly redirecting those writes to a HDD instead. Newer controllers support 'wear leveling' to minimize this damage. Also, don't ever defrag an SSD...this provides no benefit while shortening the life of the drive by repeatedly writing over much of the disk (depending on used space).

i havent had the money to go for an SSD yet, but its on the list and may do around tax time next year. I am still rocking my WD Blue Drives, and will definately keep those as primary storage, but i think an ssd would obliterate lag in a few of my programs(photoshop, vegas video, general games). so, name in the hat if you don't mind good sir.

make sure you enable trim support. :whistler:
also, i said "i am saving to buy a 120g or more sata3 ssd for the replacement of my desktop 60g... " well, i got a second 60gb for raid 0, and wound up with some problems. first problem, i knew i might run into. i had two different ssd controllers for the ssd's, and they were completely different... kept getting BSOD, so i figured it was that. i just made a quick run to a friends house, who traded me a like sata 3 60gb sandforce drive for my old same size agility ssd and a 160gb hdd.... just finished reinstalling the basics, ill let you all know how it goes, haha
