View Full Version : Caution: Compiling code on fast computer may cause system shutdown
Well, it's not that time of year anymore, but it's still unavoidable. Crashing due to overheating.
Well, my stock heatsink ain't cuttin' it anymore. I think I got enough cash for a better HS. It was designed for dual-core at business usage, not quad-3.8 cross-kernel-compiling.
Not that this is the main purpose of the thread, but I am open to suggestions.
PS:There wassome dust, but not that much. Good airflow didn't stop it hitting 65°c, though.

i'm running a quad core phenom 2 oc'd at 3.6ghz. when letting it churn away at converting dvds into mkv files it would run all four cores at 100%. with that cooler it still never got above 45* or so. maybe as high as 47*.

I'm on a moderate budget right now (waiting for my hopeful-employer to return my call), so that CM Vortex seems promising....

that one is definitely a nice cooler. i just installed one on a friend's pc. but it was actually too tall for the case and i had to modify the side panel so the heat pipes stuck out a little.

What's your ambient temp AmEv? I lower my OC a bit in summer. In winter, I crank it up and crack a window when the room starts getting warm. Winter is one hell of a heat sink.
It was in the 80s, but Idaho cools super-quickly. Ain't that right, billygoat and D?

It rained here too, definitely snowed in the mountains though.
Yeah, my dad drove up to Stanley area for work.
First thng he said when he came home? "Slidng on the snow in an Isuzu is NOT fun!"
We need to throw a get-together some time.

For a little more money (in some cases) you might check into one of these:

Its rated pretty high and I have heard it does quite well.
Might help out a bit more if you are doing alot of compiling over longer periods of time.
Ehh, Out of my budget right now. Going to go air for now, thwn give that HS to my mom's computer.
Went and got th CM Hyper 212+.
Thing barely fits inside my case.
