btw .

his sister's portable hard drive it was a mybook the usb port broke off it.

It has a western digital 2tb green hard drive i bought a new enclosure put it in there its sata.
Dosen't show up in my computer when i go to manage disk i can get it to show up as unallocated space

if im correct it is basically saying it is empty but i know its suppose to be almost full .
i have got one recovery program to show it has data but it will only let me get like one gig max
but atleast it found something do you know any way i can recover this without formatting it
i really would like to save his sisters data years of pics and stuff any ideas

i thought there could be something on there from western digital messing up the works since it was a portable hard drive maybe .
all help appreciated

there has to be some way to save it i hope lol

the easiest thing to do is to download slax or puppy linux and burn the iso to disk of make a boot usb stick. then boot your computer with that and pull the data off the drive to another drive. hook it back up with some windows action and reformat then copy the data back.

Before you do ANYTHING else (disk repair utils, etc), make sure that the enclosure you are using supports advanced format drives. The 4k sectors on these drives are incompatible with some cheaper sata to usb bridges.

The chipset in the Rosewill enclosure you linked to should work with 4k sectored drives, just not in WinXP. When you boot up with a Linux live boot cd, make sure you have another drive to copy the data to from the drive you are trying to salvage. Do not write to the drive you are salvaging.

Once the drive is connected to the usb port it should be visible under the "Devices" section of any folder you are looking at. It will be listed as the volume name the drive had under Window. See the attached screenshot.
