Hello everyone, majority of you probably have no clue who I am as i am quite the newcomer to this forum. This is by no means my first mod, nor will it be the last. But this is my first worklog to a mod and the first "published" (for lack of a better term) one.

First off. WTF. Project CZTR. Ok about 3 years ago when Motorola started naming everyone of their products as something with 4 letters my friends and i started trying to do that to a lot of stuff. My s/n was one of them, cheztir -> cztr. It was nice and short. Eventually my network was named that, but none of the stuff matched. A Blue Linksys Router, Beige Cable Modem, Silver G5, Black Dell LCD, Clear Speakers. Well it's time to change that. In one of my searches for a unifying theme i went with a barcode and CZTR printed underneath.

Part 1 of this project has begun, i'm making an old Compaq Presario 7470 into a MythTV Server/Client. With a modified Xbox or something as a front end in my media room.

A Stock 7470. (so kindly provided by someone on ebay)
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/3ff9d0c2.jpg

The case is going glossy black, with 2 barcodes found on it. One painted in white on the front over the compaq logo. the second is on the side, but in a very creative manner, or at least i think. More on that much later.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0135.jpg
The Case bezel ripped off. This was taken for a photoshop idea.

I don't like that power button...not at all. Time to fix that.

yeah my outdoor workshop for now.

Sanding...........

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0152.jpg

This is my status right now with the case, the lighting and fan controls will be housed in the opening you see towards the bottom of the bezel, there are already two USB plugs for there. USB 1.0 for now, making them 2.0.

All for now. Sorry not much done, as i headed out to visit family last week. Lemme know what you think so far. Expect updates almost everyday. Time to go sand more.

Nice little mod. What did you use to fill the power button? Bondo? Great job!

While that is drying other things are coming along. Like reverse engineering compaq's power on/off, power led, and HD leds. For anyone who would like to know these for future reference, i doubt compaq would change the wires up too much.

Blue - Power Good
Brown - Ground
Red - Power LED +
Green - Power LED -
Yellow - HD LED +
Orange - HD LED -
(Full Pinout Later)

also work on adding things to the little USB bay begins.
Any ideas or where to put the power switch guys?

Hide it somewhere.

In my mod, the top panel of my case can come off (and it came that way), and i am putting the buttons under there =]

hidden = good.

Well, I had hoped to get much more work done on this, but last night i got distracted by a PSP and my friends new intel iMac, nice machine btw. Anywho I noticed a nice little feature on the new iMacs that many, myself included until last night, didn't know about. The little remote sticks to the case. Not with glue or anything, but magnetically!

I figure since this first mod in the series is a media center-esque tower, why not give it a try.

Magnets found:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0177.jpg

Finding a resonable place not too close to the HDDs.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0178.jpg

Using my DVD Player's remote (the heaviest of all my remotes) and gave a small trial run seeing how well it holds up.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0179.jpg
IT WORKS! Now just to add a few more magnets so i can be certain it stays on all the time when i need it to.

Btw Omega i took your advice, all of the buttons are hidden inside that little flap area. I plan to have it light up when you flip the cover up.

Nice but how will you rerout the power buton? I may want to do that for mine too:).

Less time spent on mod again. More time spent on GTA:LCS or just trying to get it to work on a 1.5 PSP (those of you respectful PSP owners out there you know the challenge)

Well in the idea forming process I decided i just hated the floppy drive being there. And since a nice BIOS update allows booting from USB, why not just eliminate it? Well i did and i also found it will be the perfect place to add my touch to it.

After the bondo has been applied and sanded barely. I left the case out in the sun to dry. Unbeknownst to me, it was going to rain today. Hence why the case appears slightly wet in this image.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0180.jpg
Good news is the bondo was dry by then anyway.

Dried and sanded more.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0181.jpg

Probably one more layer of bondo, and I'll be good, there are a few holes to patch. Then the invert of this image goes into that spot.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/CZTR.png

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maximan1 basically i went to Radioshack and grabbed two switches, a nice toggle (SPDT) to control my aux. fans, some LEDs, and a few momentary switchs. I wired those up to the control panel, they are temporary. The Momentary switch for power is going to be replaced by a nice Vandal Switch, and if i can find a nice SPDT switch by Bulgin as well ill get one of those. I also plan to get white LEDs to light that little area. You can find ym wiring diagram up top. Though take notice, when i found another 7470, the power plug was reversed, i have no idea which one is the correct setting, Blue at the top or not. But my design calls for 1 pin on each side of the plug.
See the pic:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0182.jpg

Anybody know where to find a Bulgin Vandal SPDT Switch? For a reasonable price?

Small update, but no new work cause it's raining here still. Basically where the bondo is now nicely sanded off, I'll be painting it with the CZTR emblem. But surprise, I'll be eliminating the power button......why you may ask.

I'm stealing more ideas from Apple.....I went to go power back on my PowerMac today, I have an older Studio Display with a touch sensitive button, and sudden i was for the first time really blown away by how cool that was. So i looked up schematics for making a touch sensitive button. Long story short, i shall make one and add it to the CZTR Emblem. Like So:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/CZTRNew.png
PS: Other Mac people, you can invert this image by hitting Apple-Alt-Ctrl-8 and you other people it's a fun ay to freak people out.

Other note I'm still contemplating where to put the IR Reciever. (My PSP is the remote control)

Omega

oh snap, that would be awesome for a mod, touch sensitive buttons

i might just have to do that on argent dawn

put a touch sensitive start button on a special place on the front and a reset somewhere else (that won't get hit as much)

Genious!

Here is the schematic i'm going to use for this. If somebody find a better one please point me there. But 5 bucks for a button is close to what i'd pay for a Vandal switch anyway.

Well due to some massive power failures in my area (my neighborhood's transformer blew up, nice little oil fire going, lots of smoke, sadly no pics) i haven't gotten as much work done as I should. But there is progress.

I finally dumped the Compaq BIOS
If anyone has ever had to use it you know what a nightmare it is. I looked up the manufacturer and got a stock AwardBIOS file from them. Flashed it. BAM. a nice new, faster booting BIOS. Now I can boot from any of the 3 hds in my system, a zip drive, a USB drive (floppy mode), and LAN. Alongside that there are new OC'ing options and RAM timing settings. These may not seem like a big deal to you, but the most configuration you could do on the old bios was IRQ setup and Boot order. Maximan, this would be good for your mod as well.

Ok excitement over, Slackware is up and running, no X yet. but thats due to a crappy internal graphics card. KnopMyth is next anyway.

Do you think yours would handle Windows Vista (up for download)?
Either way heres the link:
http://www.microsoft.com/Windowsvista/

And

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_vista

I'm putting Vista on my sisters new Vaio (which I got for $25 at a friends house with monitor and accesories :D(no its not new more kind of old)), and probably getting a new RAM for it too. BTW does anyone know if its nessesary to be water cooled when you overclock 50 mhz (so it'd be 450 mhz to 500 mhz so she would quit bothering me with her games)?

Nagoshi
06-19-2006, 01:26 PM
Depend on what kind of computer you wanna overclock. Laptop? I dont know. 450MHz.... sounds like P2s, or P3s. No you shouldnt need watercooling. I went from 550MHz to 787MHz, and my temps are lower than 35C idle on stock cooling. But it all depends on the temps of your CPU. Normally you should have a menu in your BIOS that would be named ''PC Health'' where you can see anything temp related (sometimes you will be able to overclock direcly there).

Be sure your temps never get much higher than 60C when loaded. If your CPU is running cool when idling (around 30C) you should be okay. If its hot (higher than 30C) try to clean the heatshink. Just remove the dust in it. Q-tips worked well on my heatsink. be sure to clean the dust on the fans too. And if you have some spare fans, try to have one in the front of the case, that will blow fresh air in the case, and one in the back of the case, that will blow all the bad hot air from the comp :)

maximan1
06-19-2006, 01:29 PM
Gee thanks Nagoshi!
Its a Pentuim 2 desktop computer.
So you're saying I can overclock to 700 mhz without burning the poor little CPU to hell?
Gee thats a prity good idea.

Nagoshi
06-19-2006, 01:43 PM
Welllll maybe not 700MHz, I have a Pentium3 CPU, and you have a Pentium2.

Depending on the brand of the motherboard, if it's not ''branded'' (Dell, compaq, sony, etc) you will be able to overclock it. The thing is, you may need to use jumpers or DIM configurations located direcly on the motherboard > look in your motherboard's user guide. But surely your overclocking options will be located into the BIOS.

Maybe you will be able to overclock it to around, like 600MHz if you can, depending on your RAM, computer parts and heat.

I REALLY suggest you to read THIS guide before overclocking, as you will be aware of the consequences of overclocking if you happen to overdo it.
http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=79266
Note that this guide was made ''recently'', using 2GHz speeds as exemples.

You will need to use ratios to control your PCI and AGP speeds to 33MHz and 66MHz. Doing not so may reduce the working speed of your components, or make them become unstable.

AND DO NOT INCREASE YOUR VOLTAGE BY MORE THAN 10% OF THE DEFAULT VALUE. Doing so may permanently damage your CPU and motherboard.

Make sure you have more than 200W of power in your power supply. 230W should be okay for a Pentium2.

And it is possible that your comp may not be stable after overclocking. it is because your speeds will be too high for your components, and it will cause failure. They may appear as (and most frequenly) BSODs. Blue Screen Of Death. :) Be sure to watch your temps too. You can use Motherboard Monitor to see your motherboard temperatures, and load your CPU using a benchmarking program, or use SuperPI or Prime95 to load your CPU and watch your temps go up at the same time to see if you handle under 60C.

Maximan I'm not a big windows person by any means. I doubt it would run Vista even in my wildest dreams, i've played with Vista and i don't find it to have too big of an "ooooooo" factor. My machines run *NIX varients, mostly Linux or OS X, but i have a few odd balls.

This machine is the front end for a very nasty looking backend Dual Pentium 3 system that is powering MythTV for the house. The CPU in this thing is TOO weak, but if your looking to reach your goal of 700mhz you might get some luck. The BIOS update i mentioned before supports K-3 CPUs rather than the K2 in the 7470 now, theyll go a bit higher, not sure how much tho.

maximan1

Will my Vaio (which is dual core mind you) run Vista?
I think its 1000 mhz

cheztir
06-19-2006, 09:05 PM
You've got one strange Vaio, considering i wasn't aware of ANY consumer level dual core chips til just recently, nor ones that clocked in at 1ghz (w/o speedstep goin) Did you mean Dual CPU, cause it might be Dual Pentium 3's, in which case thats Dual CPU not Dual Core. A dual 1ghz PIII would run vista, depending on how much RAM and such, you wont get the pretty Aero (cough OS X Aqua ripoff), and it will probably be a pinch on the slow side, but i'd say it's runnable. Assuming i guessed what you meant on your CPU, unless you're BSing it. Get back to me on that CPU issue.

More Pics in a few minutes, finishing some sanding and gunna apply a final coat of primer, then the bezel will be done until all the parts get their final paint.

I'm seeing serious serious inconsistency in your posts.

The Vaio has gone from:

I'm putting Vista on my sisters new Vaio (which I got for $25 at a friends house with monitor and accesories (no its not new more kind of old))
an older machine had for 25 bucks

I think it's 1000mhz
has a 1ghz cpu, which if it's a pentium D how can you guess that far off?

now to being a Pentium D, while yes a D is dual core, i really want to know how that is defined as old and can be had 25 bucks, surly somebody would have the sense to sell it for more than that.

Really if it is the Pentium D, than i sure hope it would or else Vista is gunna suck a LOT more than it already does.

I might just be analyzing your posts wrong but please clarify, you seem to jump from system to system without clarifying which one you're talking about.

Also, Sony's site sucks. It doesn't load right in Firefox.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Project CZTR however, all is going well, broke down and used an Ubuntu disc i had layin around worked like a charm. The sanding on the front bezel has proven to just be on tough little--- well you know. There are a few small spots left.

Back to my actual project after wondering off for a few posts.
Finishing up some stuff on the bezel before my cruise this next week.

BY NO MEANS IS THIS TEST SETUP SAFE NOR RECOMMENDED! Note there is a static proof bag under the board and the HDs.
This was mearly just to get a test setup running to see how bad i'd need to tweak down the linux kernel to get a decent running speed.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0185.jpg
Midway through a washdown. Cause i have VERY VERY pour ventilation in my work space. I have a ventillator mask, but that doesn't stop a layer of dust from forming on other stuff. So it's washed down when there is enough dust.

My handy little dell laptop, been through a lot in it's life, seen 6 OS's, 2 HDs, 3 Batteries, 2 Wifi cards, and 1 mobo replacement. But it hasn't seen the worst yet, SURPRISE! That little laptop is next in the Proj. CZTR series. I do quick uploads for pics on there now.

More sanding....Dear god. This final layer is the worst.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0189.jpg
Yea Yeah. FAR from beauty as this point this is the final layer so it all had to be even. You can see where i hit previous layers of bondo. Or even the case itself at one point i think, ehh.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/Cheztir/HPIM0190.jpg
Up right, with the other portion of the front bezel attached. so you can see the final work. The last layer of primer will be done tommorrow and then probably the final coat of paint. since all is good. Then i can make a nice template of the button, that image will be up in a bit. Gimme time to photoshop.

That logo is going to work well if you're sizing it. Have you considered any lighting options yet?

As for the p2 thing. Slot based p2 systems are normally passive cooling (uses case exhaust fan) and run really hot. I jerry rigged a 80mm fan, cleaned the heatsink, and used AS thermal compound. It runs about 38C under load. It's an old 266 running 300 mhz. I wouldn't suggest a massive OC on a p2 without some type of optimized cooling solution. It's a real quick and easy way to watch something overheat.

There will be lighting but that is to come a bit later. See what im working on now is the bezel. I've always found that lighting in the bezel takes away from the look.

Later on, as in about a week or so. Ill begin work on the metal portion of the case. I plan to have a nice frosted plexi bar code on the side of the case. Then have a white cold cathode light that up.

Update: What i thought would be the final layer of paint, didn't come to fruitition as there was an undiscovered little area that paint sorta built up, so i'll sand that down and then the bezel shall be finished.

Also, anybody know howto smoke plexi. Cause there is the ugly purple cover at the bottom, it's transparent and i like it that way, but not purple.

maximan1

To smoke plexi you can make a vynil cutout and paste it on, then sandblast it for a "frosted" look.

Pentium2s are all slot1s (as far as I know). I never heard of ''passively cooled'' ones, since P1s had fans on them, as well as some phat heatsinks... Generally they have some fans that will direcly fit on the slot1 card, you then plug the fan on the motherboard CPUfan connector. The fan size is around 40mm tho, dont expect much air going thru it.

Ok, after much delay. The Bezel is now complete, with one minor exception. I don't have my signurature barcode and print on there, but thats cause i found out we didn't have ANY white paint. And as i leave for vacation later tommorrow, I really didn't feel like doing that on top of packing. Also, anybody have any tips for a raised surface for the barcode, i'd like to have it extrude from the case a bit, but nothing big.

THIS MOD IS NOT OVER. If you think it is you are wrong good sir. We still have the back casing left, which will be interesting as the case is in two parts (one fits into the other). Plus remember, Project CZTR is a series not just this mod, this was mearly the first.

There is one small imperfection, but in the lighting where the case will be, you can't see it. So i'm not bothering with it, it's like a small <1cm x <1cm paint build up spot.

I'd like something better than just spraying down a lot of paint for extruding the CZTR logo.

If you are feeling like doing horribly fiddly work you could use plasticard (it has other names, none of which I can remember), it comes in different thicknesses (under 1mm to pretty thick) and could be cut into your barcode pattern etc. You would only really need a VERY steady hand, a sharp blade and something to file it smooth.
plus if done with something like plasticard you can spray it other colours before sticking it on, maybe even glow in the dark fun :O.
other than that vinyl or even something similar might work but would probably be a pain to paint
mod is looking good so far :D
oh and p2s I was under the impression it was (as it still mostly is) only the big manufacturers that used wierd partially passive cooling solutions (I know Dell, compaq and IBM did it a LOT), but I thought intel reference design had a fan?
EDIT:
oh and if the surface is curved it may be worthwhile to heat the styrene (think that might be another name for it) in hot water then mould it to the surface, gently.

Why and since when does Vista suck?
Hope you had a nice vacation!

Nagoshi
06-29-2006, 06:22 AM
First, its a beta version, so it sucks. Partically no hardware compatibility since it only uses Vista drivers and they are still not all out. SEcond, Vista asks ALOT from the computer and they say that even the fastest computers (stock, not overclocked) we can find on the market can't run perfecly the Aero theme.

Youd still be better with Windows XP Pro.

Well work has happily resumed. But it will be a slow work from here on as school has resumed for me. But i did finally treat myself to a new wireless dremel, so that should help compensate for the lost time.

Well, just modding this OLD pc was getting a bit boring, so i have decided to kick it up a notch. After seeing justblair's PS2/PC hybrid tower, it inspired me to redo an old mod from a few years back.

I shall be putting an Xbox 1 inside the case as well, perhaps even a 7" Wide LCD i stumbled across.

This does crank up the difficulty on this project, as the Compaq case for those of you unaware is an older proprietary two piece case (the internals all held in an internal housing, which slides into an external case).

Well now for the pictures, cause i'd be really surprised if anyone actually read everything i just typed.

Case setup, at least the PC side.

The HD's are gunna be mounted near the bottom of the case. Also, near the bottom of the case is a bracket where the new plexi board that holds the xbox mobo will go.

Top monuted bracket, and where the dual Shuttle PSU's will later go, right now the stock ATX PSU is crammed in.

My new LCD in it's test setup (aka a dilbert calendar)

Yes, we have had plenty of old compaqs down at the shop. The latest "old" one we have had was the replace the motherboard. Luckily going back to our stone age times we had one at the back for a socket 7.

As the 48-hour test continued, I took a look at the machine while I was getting coffee, I felt the hardrive to see how how it was, and then when I touched the CPU heatsink...holy ****.

If I find my camra, I shall get you pictures.

MitaPi, thats not the exact model I have, tho that one does look nice. I have the 10.8v Li-Ion model, grabbed it from home Depot when they were on sale last week for 49.99.

I can say this dremel kicks ass. Much better than be restrained by a cord. I just need to grab some more accesories for it.

Well warning , buy some other type of cutting blades as the included ones aren't top quality. They work great for thin plastics, but long cuts and they tend to shatter. So far my only complaint, also the battery has been charged up to full and i used it for a good 3 hours today cutting some plexi, not even closed to 50% drain.

More Pics soon. "Broken" (ha) Xbox is on delivery now, expect it to be put in soon.

Liking the mod so far, I deal with like 20 of these cases in my vocational computer class and have been wanting to mod one for a while lol. Definately some inspiration to steal one :)
