On the Currently Active Users (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/online.php) and main forum page (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/) ... why are banned users shown in grey as logged-on and doing stuff?

Apparently they show logged in, at least until their session times out. Also, when you are banned you can still view the same content that a guest is able to view. Since they probably tried to login it will record their session even as a banned user, but the system just treats them as a "guest".
