i was inspired by a case that i had seen on a couple of sites (possibly this one too)
it was a case made in respect to a mustang (very cool) and i was inspired by this to do somthing of the like to my case.
so, yesterday i did somthing about it, and got some suitable sheet metal to do the job (a spanner rack as it happens:D) i used this as it was the right size for the job as the space under my desk is sort of limited cos of the cross bar.
anywho i fixed the sheet onto the top of the case and used filler to get the right
shape, sanded it smooth etc. and im currently painting it.
now i have some questions thathopefully some of you more experienced modders can help me with,
first off how do i get a nice smooth coat onto the surface (the underneat is smooth aswell)
and how many coats of paint should i put on before the many coats of laquer?
(i want it to be shiny)

(will post some pics asap)

i just dont now how to upload the pictures???

Get a photobucket account and then link to your images there. That's what most people here do.

love it
i know its kinda late but you should cut the fan gril under the scoop it will give a more even light spreading

GT40_GearHead
06-27-2006, 06:20 PM
or you could mount a black fan

Super_Ted01

wow Nice if I saw that case with the scoop minuse the lighting I would have said its was a consumer case that you could buy. You should paint the case red though as the case reminds me of a muscle car. But the black is so dam shiny.

Super_Ted01

you could, you'd just have to add the
scoop yourself tho:)
iv still not finished with the colour either, iv got a couple of more coats of clear to go on some parts, and collour on others.
but when im finished spraying im gonna get some pro paint polish from my dad, to give it a mirror finish.
iv got some more pictures to upload of the window i mentioned i was putting in.
and also iv made my own version of a stealth drive il post too

got some pics of one side putting on first layers of clear;
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image010-2.jpg

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image011-2.jpg

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image014-1.jpg

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image016.jpg

other side panel wetsanded ready for a light coat of paint before i cut window;
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image012-2.jpg

window marked up and masked, started to cut;
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image017.jpg

window cut;
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image018.jpg

this is my first real mistake, for this ithought i could save some time from not having to file so much if using a jigsaw, and decided to use a hand nibbler instead, not a good idea. not only does it not give as good as a cut as you might think, it also ensures that you get plenty of blisters on your hand, my count is five big ones (owch).

this is where my panel had a grill pressed into the side but as i didnt want this i use body filler to get rid of it and sanded it over onse it set.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image019.jpg

heres a pic of the panel on the case after a first coat of colour with the acrylic bolted on (not totally ready yet, i need some more nuts and bolts)

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image021.jpg

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image022.jpg

and heres a pic of how i started about 'stealthing' my drive/(s) when i get another

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/Image023.jpg

that drive just has a piece of acrylic on the front with a slot cut for the button, i've made an acrylic button that im going to stick onto the exsisting one with epoxy, the rest will be screw to the drive tray, the picture doesnt do much justice as its only in its early stages but it'l look better when its done.

thats it so far

dude... i'm doing a project, and i want that glas finish on the paint
how do you do that

simon275
07-02-2006, 04:45 AM
Nice window very different to whats out there all those angles. My protractor in its draw is yearning to measure them. Anyho so you just bolted a square shee of perspex to the back of the side panel right. What would be cool if you cut out little bits of prespex that fitted in the gaps and have the prespex level with the metal now that would be sweat.

btw nice Catapillar work boots.

as for your question on painting i found out most of what i needed to know about it here
http://www.boxgods.com/dept/modding/index.php?Action=Article&ID=198
and here
http://www.mnpctech.com/case-mod-paint-computer-pc-case-mod-how-to.html
the second ones more for the finish, when you do finish it, make sure you use professional clothes and polishes for the best finish, and just generally take your time *yawn*

and i was thinking of doing somthing about the edges of the metal and the acrylic not sure wot yet tho but i cant do wot you suggested though, sadly cos the acrylic iv got is a bit thick, i might consider it in the long run though.

although i was thinking of making the metal protrude using some body fillerand do it to the level of the plastic, not sure yet cos itl take alot of filler.
i'll be finishing the window this week some time hopefully so i'll post pics then.

and also has anyone got an lcd mod in there case? and where did you get it from? an cost etc?
i'v seen them on ebay for about £20-30 but im not sure wether i trust the sellers yet

simon275
07-02-2006, 07:26 AM
maybe you could sand the edges of the metal that border on the acrylic to give a curved edged. I cant tell how thick the metal on the side of the case is though so if it's thin then just ignore the above idea.

Super_Ted01
07-02-2006, 08:21 AM
yea it is a bit too thin for that, i suppose i'll just cross that bridge when i come to it,

Super_Ted01
07-29-2006, 11:13 AM
well my windows not looking too bad at the min (need to do more work but its finding the time)
but anyway iv just ordered some stuff off of ebay ,lcd screen and acrylic, and i want to mod them into the front, but as always i forgot where i saw a worklog for it, i know basically what to do i just find it easier to have somthing to work from, so if any one can point me in the right direction it'll be much appreciated.
p.s. i wont be able to post pics for a while, my phone got wet and i dont have a camera about

What sort of LCD is it?

The playstation one screen instructions can be found at

Rudyatech (http://rudyatek.com/tidder/lcd/)

or

Bittech (http://www.bit-tech.net/modding/2004/07/07/psone_lcd/1.html)

Starfox's mod inc sync converter (http://starfox.ucc.asn.au/carcomp/serio_lcd.htm)

The Rudyatech method gives the neatest finish. But have a look at the last few pages of the bit tech forum... Theres a great contribution by a chap who has used a 24LC12(ish) programmable eprom to produce an eidid circuit that ids with the plug and pray on the graphics card... Its a geniusley (real word..honest) simple circuit, but worth far more than the value of its 3 parts!

its a ps2 screen but thats basically wot i needed, im not gonna mess about like that tho, just gonna use the tv out on my gpu

justblair
07-30-2006, 08:57 AM
I tried the tv out method, I can tell you for sure that the vga method is waaayy better. I read in a forum that the colour balance is poor, and my experiance showed exactly that... A rouge tint to the image. It was gaudy!

When I went RGB on it, the colours come out spot on, the picture is clearer and more stable. Its a difference some may describe as subtle, but I wouldn't want to put up with the composite image. Maybee I'm being to fussy, mines going to run status screens only. I of course ran a movie on it to test it. Here the colour imbalance was very noticable on the composite connection

I was always going to go the vga route anyway, as mine is going in a HTPC that uses its composite out to attach to the telly (though I am going to try to output to RGB scart

I am getting mine started using a dummy vga at the moment on my AIW 9600, But ordered a matrox pci card which will be dedicated to the sony screen. Aparently you dont need to do the eprom mod if its the only screen attached to the card.

I got an 8mb G200 of fleabay for about 6GBP delivered. I'm hoping that it will do the business. Most use the mystique cards from Matrox that are even cheaper than that AFAIK. I'm a little worried the G200 wont work, as I have seen comments in forums that say the mystique has the right features, but my research suggests that all the MAtrox cards can do it. I'll report my results in the Playstation pc hybrid thread (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3356) i'm running just now

See how you like the composite image, but keep it in mind that better is available if it disapoints you. Perhaps the colour balance varies between samples.

***Edit*** Just twigged that you said ps2 screen... You may not be able to do RGB, depending on the screen manufacturer, but then again the screen you get may be better at the composite connection.

iv got my screen an dismantled the casing
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/Super_Ted01/58d45f02.jpg
so i will get on to working with it asap.
p.s i also got a new phone today so can take my pictures again

an i can use the tv out with this thankfully, but it does take up a lot of cpu using it with dual view (100% infact) il just use it in a different mode

i thought about changing it to vga connection, but aswell as having to mess about with electronics (which im not to bad with but would prefer to go the easy route) i wouldnt be able to connect it to other input sources i.e. tv, ps2 etc. unless i were to fiddle about, unless someone knows of a solid simple way of doin this?:D
