Hey guys, thought I'd post some pics of my 737 case here, now that it's finally done (well, aside from a minor repair). My worklog is much to extensive to repost here, so if you want more details, feel free to check out all 26 pages at gruntville.com. Enjoy!

Its history in a nut-shell:
This case was made for my dad, who is a retired United Airlines mechanic with 35 years of service. He primarily worked on the Boeing 737s, hence the case design. I fabricated it totally from plexiglass. The Jet-7 is the only thing not hand-made. I even built a special vacuum-forming table for the sole purpose of forming the outer shell. The slimline slot-loading DVD/CD drive is hidden in the wing as well as the kb/m receiver, and the rear horizontal stabilizer serves as the mouse's docking station and charger.
Anyone know who the pilot is?
:)

Great job, Bod!

I've been following your work log over at Gruntville for a long long time now, it was you that inspired me to build my vacuum former! I bet your dad was so proud to see such an amazing case... have you showed t\him the work log? Thats the most impressive part, to me at least. There really is a TON of work into that piece of art.

Great job!

Thanks man! Yes, I finally got to show it to him after MML last week. Unfortunately, the shell got broken during shipping, so I couldn't give him a complete case, but I did print out the entire worklog from Gruntville, so at least he has some reading material now! LOL

How did your vac table come out?

Awesome. I think that is the first airplane mod I've seen. The pilot is a nice touch too.

BTW, the dark shots look really sweet.

Wow Bod's here!! Good to see you. I'm really sorry to hear about what happened. I was crushed when I saw the pics on GV. I too have followed your work for a while. In fact.. This mod was the reason I signed up over at Gruntville :). I really liked Home Sweet Home as well, I refer friends to it frequently to demonstrate that case modding is about creativity and execution. Even the most ordinary of objects that people wouldn't even think of (ie. Floor vents, Crown Molding, Cross stitch) can be used to make a very cool case! Then there is UAL737 which goes to the other end of the spectrum. Its the epitome of fabrication and craftsmanship... well before this turns into a rambling.. GREAT CASE very inspiring and looking forward to what you come up with next!!!

Hang in there... I imagine there is an army of modders at your disposal, just waiting to send nasty grams out to FedEX. :D

Thanks guys for all the comments! I shipped the shell back to my place in CA (went with UPS this time), and will start the repair process shortly. I'm pretty confident I can fix it (Zap-a-Gap to the rescue!). If not, I still have the buck I used to form it, so I can form another one. It will just be more difficult to get the wing holes right without the rest of the plane to match to (it's currently set up at my Dad's sans cover).

That's one of the greatest, most thoughtful gifts a son could give. I bet your dad was tickled pink with it.

The pilot is from Airplane!. I can't believe no one said anything about it.

Nice to see you on our boards too.

Holy snap batman

That rocks. That is so nice especially lit up. Kinda reminds me of those airline toys you can buy off the duty free cart.

Oh and what are the specs of it.

A AMD Fx-55 and look at the latency of that ram 2-2-2-5. Did that ram come at that latency?

There is like $3000 (AUS) worth of parts there maybe more. That's one hell of a present. I'm surpised you could get you hands on an FX-55 Like no where has them in stock.

This is truly a great looking mod with the parts to match.

Yep, I didn't do anything to the memory timings. Here's their website: http://www.centon.com/advanced
I got the dual channel kit from PC Enthusiast, a now defunct magazine, for writing an article for them. Centon is relatively new in the high performance memory department, but apparently they have been making oem ram chips for quite some time.

As for the FX-55, I won that in the Hardware 4 Humanity raffle last year. As a matter of fact, I bought the A8N motherboard and 7800GT video card using my winnings from the Newegg contest. So I really didn't pay much out-of-pocket for the whole system! :D

Well, here are some closer-up shots of the shell's damage. The worst part is just above the I/O panel area. I had taped all the smaller fragments together and stuck it on the buck for the pic.
http://www.personalweb.sunset.net/~bcarter/Case/UAL737/Repair1.JPG http://www.personalweb.sunset.net/~bcarter/Case/UAL737/Repair2.JPG http://www.personalweb.sunset.net/~bcarter/Case/UAL737/Repair3.JPG http://www.personalweb.sunset.net/~bcarter/Case/UAL737/Repair4.JPG

I think I have a game-plan, now that I can see it all in front of me:
~ Cut out all the round windows prior to gluing.
~ With both pieces on the buck, start taping it together.
~ Once taped, remove it from the buck, turn it over and start gluing it from the inside.
~ I think I might look into a fiberglass repair kit, and use that on the underside along the cracks to add strength.
 For the top, I will sand down the paint, apply some bondo to even out any areas that aren't level, and sand smooth.
~ Repaint the shell.
~ Add a new, clear strip of plexi behind the window area.

I'll keep you all updated as to the outcome. Hmmm, maybe I should start a worklog on this!

Boddaker, thanks for sharing this with us here at TBCS! I've been a big fan of yours since I first came across Home Sweet Home back in the day, and loved watching this come together. It is a shame about the shipping damage, but hopefully you'll get it back together and ready for takeoff soon.

Thanks for coming by! Can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve next!

Thanks, Rankenphile. I've been lurking around for a year now, and I have been meaning to post the 737 worklog here, but I never had the time to do it. There are a lot of outstanding mods here, and I hope my latest effort can stand amongst them. :)

I do have some ideas brewing, and when I get around to embarking on another build, I will be sure to log its progress here.

When I saw the damage pics I was almost in tears. It must have been like getting a speding ticket or losing a relative.

Yeah a worklog about repairing a case would be a first.

Hope all goes well in the repair job.

A winner was chosen every week for the last 6 weeks and got a very cool case and power supply from Cooler Master. Now we are in the running for a Core 2 Extreme gaming system worth about $2000!

Thought I'd post an update on the ol' 737. After a few more months of working at it on and off, I finally got the shell repaired. It looks better than it did before! Once I got it fixed, I had my Dad ship the rest of the case back to me so I could put it back together. Timing was good, because it just so happened the GeforceLAN event was coming up. I took it down there to mark its triumphant return, and ended up winning 1st place in the case mod contest in the Best Original Case category! w00t!!
Here's a shot of it on display at the LAN:
http://www.bods-mods.com/GeforceLAN/737display.JPG

I will be sending it back to my Dad, but not before building a special reinforced and well-padded crate to ship it in.

Form anything else on it lately?

Thanks guys. No, I haven't used my vac table since the shell. I still need to do some modifications to it. I want to make it so I can just use 1/2 of it for smaller parts if I want to. To do this, I need to add a partition to the center of the heat box, and modify the frame so that it has a center brace. Then i can form with sheets of 2' x 2' acrylic. I also want to incorporate a strip heater somehow for bending corners.
I'm just now finishing up my current project, then it's back to getting my garage expanded. Once that's done, I will set up my acrylic area where the vac table will take up permanent residence. :)
