Hello.
Noticed there aren't a lot of qpack modders out there.
Just a casual gamer looking to fix his rig for leetness without destroying it. Just something fun and possibly useful. I know basic soldering/wiring and have access to powertools. i have like 120 bucks, and thats all have... and i want to try not to use a lot of it. need a cell phone bad as my last got trashed in a lawn mower : \

i might want to have better..

-cooling (the meter sayz 35 c on the stock cooler, 39 c on the gpu at idle. :( ) thinking about getting the blue orb II as it's said it is compatible with the qpack

also cables are what the psu came with. they are long and i had to tie them up into circles for best efficiency. if i knew of any shorter cables for a sff pc, i would get them.

-portability (thinking about somehow attaching an lcd monitor for a solution to forgeting a monitor @ a friend's house. Also nice to have an mini external for IMs and music players. will not be my main. thinking like this: http://www.bit-tech.net/article/136/2 with this: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-1-8-Inches-TFT-LCD-TV-Monitor-Home-Car-Kitchen_W0QQitemZ270006804957QQihZ017QQcategoryZ61 398QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem or http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-LEGACY-LSCHR5-6-5-6-CAR-COLOR-TFT-MONITOR_W0QQitemZ9736118798QQihZ008QQcategoryZ6776 9QQcmdZViewItem)

-looks (my second set of side windows look pretty ugly with dust and a few scratches. maybe replace with something else? paint it and have a negative picture?)

i have an open optical drive bay and floppy.

currently i have small speakers attached inside (away from hds and cards... but is that still not good:? ?)

Please offer ideas, suggestions, and possible hints on to how to do them. brain storm a little since i know theres gatta be qpack owners that want to do the same thing.

I will provide useful pictures tomorrow or so.

the shell is stripped from its paint. looks 10 bucks more expensive.

Oh, also i am a novice airbrusher (have the tools for airbrushing)

Wow, incredible forum btw. Everything about it is nice :) . thanks for reading my first lengthy post :D.

Hmm, this is giving me ideas.

as you can see there is space between the motherboard and the backside of the front wall. i have two speakers attached to the holes. can anyone tell me if it's safe to put those there? they don't move around at all but they are a bit close to the optical. I don't really need them but sometimes im too lazy to bring speakers and a sound activated cathode blinks accurately to the sound.

possible solution for the cables being too long. Or i could just cut them and solder. probably ganna cover them with uv reactive neways so i guess ill do that.

Depends on the size of the speakers. If they're little tiny things, then you should be fine.

As far as the cabling goes, you don't have to solder it after cutting it. It'll be fine if you just wrap it back up. Oh, and don't connect anything to black ;)

UV sleeving looks pretty good. I have it in the rig you've seen at the LAN parties (Y'Know, the cavalier?) and it would probably work better in that small area.

Welcome to the boards. H2Micr0 is probably the coolest Qpack mod I have ever seen. (So far that is..:) ) Its probably abit outside of the $120 budget, but definately worth looking at for some great ideas!!!

H2Micr0 Worklog on Bit-Tech (http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=109942)

Good Luck and looking forward to what you come up with!!

Ov, what's funny is that Rew showed me that awhile ago =D

not the worklog, but the finished thing. I don't know if he want's to WC as much as he just wants to do a general mod.

Wow, that's pretty ingenious. Yeah, I showed Omega something similar that you can purchase at voyeurmods (PrimoChill X-QPack H20). Doesn't seem like they sell 'em nmore though.

I'm thinking wcing might be little heavy for me. I'd hate to screw up (spill the fluid) and destroy everything i worked for last winter... or is it more simple and safe than it looks?

The pics will come sometime later tonight. Sry, I signed up to help out a Taiko (Japanese Drumming) Camp so i'll be pretty busy the next week.

WHAT?!?!?!

How big are the speakers? I'm thinking about an LCD screen for my mod too... course I only want a 7-8 inch screen. Unfortunately the LCD would blow your 120 bucks away...

WHAT?!?!?!

oh yeah, he had it at PE, and it fell out of his pocket, and one of the college's lawnmowers ran over it. Then the PE teacher showed everybody the dismembered piece of tech and told us not to bring our phones.

Yeah, sucks. Thinking about getting a cheapy 20 dollar phone and saving for a ds lite. damn i want one so bad. Basically a cheap pda with wi-fi and fun gaming.

The lcd shouldn't cost 120 for 7 or 8 inch, unless you want really good quality.

I'm actually thinking of replacing my sony crt too. I'm thinking about saving for this one for it's color quality and 2ms! (HS!) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824014111.

As for the case, I'm thinking getting 1.5" tall rubber feet to replace my current ones. This will elevate the case a bit which will allow the fans ill later install to function well. Gluing nuts into them will also enable me to screw them off to store inside the optical drive bay.

So just as the mod in the second post, ill screw in fans inside the small space. Three because I'm thinking more fans at lower speeds will run quieter and I can speed them up for gaming. These fans should be around 65 mm so ill see what i can find.

I'm going to look for those tiny but okay-quality ipod speakers i can shove into the optical drive, but i'm worried that it might be bad for the drive below. good or bad?

This fan controller http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813999504 will control my main 120 mm, and the three smaller fans. I heard it glows blue so i really hope it matches my temp lcd. that would own so bad.

Ill re-wire the whole thing and have uv reactive sleeving (what would be the best color? do post) and finally, ill install better blue cathodes in the case, and dual red (again, not sure what color, do suggest) sound sensitive cathodes underneath the case :D that should look sick.

Thanks for posting guys, and keep throwing ideas. I think i'll live here :o

Another thing you could do is actually dis-assemble the rig (if you still have the antistatic bags and boxes) and then survey it, etc.

I would suggest a modular PSU so that you don't have to have as many cables =o

oh, also, a 7 or 8in LCD would look more than bitchin' in that thing. I would totally put a moniter in either Cav or ArgDawn, but I dont have the moniter or the window design.

EDIT:

Also, about the speakers, depends on the size. I'll probably be headed to lowes soon so I will just stop by your house and see waht the crap you're talking about.

That is if your mom isn't home =p

Yeah, I should. I just haven't found a good day to do it yet. Where would be the best place to take apart a computer? on the carpet or on a solid desk? I could to either but i'd have more space on the floor.

I actually do have a modular PSU, the SmartPower. The cables are still way long though.

The speakers either can be screwed into the back of the covering of an old optical drive I had, or can just rest facing up or down. If I'm screwing them into the back of the covering, then they'll need to be 1.75". I'm not as worried about the speakers than i am about the device that will amplify them. The last time I tried to power a small amp inside my case, the circuit board of the amp started to smoking  that image will forever be with me.

next week wouldn't work unless i get off early, but yeah, than would be great ;) .

Hmm... damn it took me such a while just to find something close to what to I need. These rubber feet might do it, but it would be better if I could find taller ones. sigh.:(

http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/item/RF-615/545/1.46%22#34;_DIAMETER_RUBBER_FEET_.html

Also, I'm thinking of painting designs on all of the three windows, but I'm not sure what to paint yet, also replacing the cheap looking plastic bolts with heavy-duty ones.

Can you paint plexi well?

Omega
07-17-2006, 06:57 PM
well, I'm not sure how well un-sanded plexi will take paint, but you could etch it with a dremel, making a small groove, then mask it off and paint into that.

Oh, and if you want to make feet, maybe we can just go to lowes or home depot, trust me, it's like the best place to go for inspiration. =D

Geuss what, rew?

Okay, don't geuss. That's okay.

I got you a 10.4in LCD screen, brand new and color, for a whopping 14.95$ plus tax. I'll give it to ya for 20$.

If you want, I can get pictures for ya.

&rew
07-17-2006, 11:46 PM
wow, dude. 15 bucks?

does it actually work? like is the lcd controller included? damn, if so nice ;)

can you give me full dimensions? i think i'll seriously consider it. link or yeah, pic would be sick.

awesome man.

also, I'm considering getting a new power supply that will make this comp function a tid better. my current smart power 2.0 500 w i got for 60, sucks in air from the back, when I want it coming from the bottom, sucking on my cards which are pretty much their own little proccesors (x-fi is damn hot!). you can touch a certain spot on the case and feel the heat radiating from the tiny x-fi heatsink 2 inches away :\. If you want it, I can sell it to you for around 50. great shape since it's only been a few months. anyone else want to take the offer as well?

Omega
07-17-2006, 11:59 PM
Uh, it's 10.4 on the diag. That's all I know. It's a sharp. Let me find the SKU on it and google it =p

and no, no controller. That might run a bit, but shop around. I bet you can hunt one down for 50$ or so.

HOLY CRAP.

the screen, I just found, by itself, is a 200$ piece of hardware.

And I got one for 15$...

SCORE.

let me find more stuff on this thing...

Hey.
Probably the last post.
I've decided on a bunch of things and I think the case is going to be bomb, if I do say so myself ;).

I'm installing 3 to four fans which are going to blow right over the motherboard which will provide me with a quieter, much cooler system. Also a fan contoller, painted windows, lighting, neat sleeves, also a rumble system (think slow, moving box, not a vibrating box) with motors and other things as well. Also, I think I've decided on the project name "PortaQuake". The ground shake'n coldest microbox before watercooling.

If you still got ideas post or mail, and quik. I'm camping next week and starting the week after I get back. spankin'

I still wanna know if you want this LCD =D

if not, then I have a toaster I haven't modded yet and a mini-ITX computer. =D
