I'm sorry I had to tell someone about this...
I have a home-based custom computer building service in Grosse Pointe, MI. Grosse Pointe is where alot of filthy rich people live and many computers I've built run over 2000 bucks. But the new record has been set- $5420! (Without the monitor). This person is a friend of mine, but he's rich and he asked for the best stuff I had:
AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 2.8GHz Processor (Overclocked to 3.15GHz!)
ASUS MSN32-SLI Deluxe Motherboard
4GB (2 x 2GB) Kingston 240-Pin DDR2 RAM w/ Heatspreader (Overclocked)
Lite-On 16X DVD-RW and DVD-ROM Drives
Logitech G15 and G7 Keyboard and Mouse
PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 1KW Quad SLI Power Supply
Dual Seagate Barracuda 750GB Hard Drives in RAID 0
Dual XFX Geforce 7950GX2 1GB Graphics Cards (Overclocked)
Silverstone TJ07 Black Aluminum ATX Case

For some reason he didn't want any watercooling

Anyway thought I'd share that with you...

I would have waited just a bit and gotten him a Conroe rig...

I just wish I would have a chance to build a computer like that..

wow. Thats amazing. It must be nice to be able to afford such a rig. Hopefully he will put it to good use.

Are you kidding? Ten bucks says he uses it to download porn and play solitaire. At least that's what happens in the UK-our rich people are idiots. They buy 4*4s for urban landscapes as a status symbol, they buy big ass computers in order to look cool. The worst thing is, everyone wants to be just like them, so instead of buying things they want or need, they try and buy a bigger 4*4, or a quad SLI setup, or something else stupid.

Green with envy? Me? Never. Don't know what you're talking about.

Ill try and get pictures, my digital cameras broken so I might have to do something else.

Don't worry, its being put to good use. He's my friend so I told him to use it for what I made it for. He plays Oblivion and Far Cry on it right now. He went out and bought a 30" Dell LCD shortly afterwards. I gotta admit playing oblivion in 2560 x 1440 is AWESOME. And booting in 12 seconds aint to bad either...

Ohh, btw (please don't call me stupid), what is a Conroe rig?

Lastly I could have put 8 gigs of RAM (and 4.5 terabytes of HDD) in it but even he knows a little about computers and thinks that's rediculous. He wanted the 750 gig barracudas because he's also going to do alot of video editing and dvd-downloading so he wanted the space.

Conroe is the new core from Intel and its much better than AMD

so what about quad SLI? that would have been niiiiice, and this would have been nice too

For the Hard Drive I didn't mean a lot of space I meant the speed. Most regular desktop Hard Drives are 7200 Rpms(which is probably what he got). A rapter is 10,000 rpms, come to think of it I think they have them at 15,000 rpms now. The speed helps everything load faster such as the OS, Photoshop, etc... The ram would be good with than especialy when the conroe processor comes out.

BTW... yes conroe is supposed to beat AMD but just wait a little while after the conroe and FX-62. AMD is yet making another process that will whip conroe out of its league.

I understand i could have gone with the intel but I got the FX-62 for a couple reasons; first, he wanted the computer within a week and they don't release that for a while, second, I overclocked it to 3.15GHz and I don't know if I could overclock the conroe to match it. Though with the money he has I wouldn't be suprised if he asks me to upgrade when it comes out.

He didnt want water cooling be cause he "read some article somewhere" that said watercooling is bad. I tried to convince him otherwise be he said to keep the cooling simple.

Also, I suppose I could have put the raptor in but I've used his computer a couple times and it goes fast enough for me...

ohh, isunktheship it does have quad SLI in it

Dreams are free computer parts aren't something we all have to live with.

Half the people who buy top of the line computerrs dont appreicate the wonders of having quad SLI cards and ones which have dual GPU's for that matter. There should be a law against that.

And a AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 those are stupidly hard to come by. like any of the FX chips.

Well its better for large programs, especially for video editing, and programs like photoshop.

Can't say I've heard AMD doing anything against conroe, heck they are just releasing the AM2. As far as I know, thier reply is just to lower the prices on the 939 CPU's way down. If they are making another proc soon that would rock though. Do you have a link to a website with the info?

amd will soon whipe the smile from intels face :P cheaper and faster processors have always been the goal of amd engineers.

one concern i have though, my mums bf is an intel engineer, and he told me that intel plan to really marginalise their extreme chips. This is because they dont get enough revenue from producing said chips. And they intend to head back toward the buisness line of computing, as this is where most of the money lies (obv). As too are AMD. They are starting work on incuding everything on their own mobo's inc graphics and DDR2 memory. What he was saying was really concerning me with whats goin to happen with gaming machines due to these new visions. Due to consoles becomeing more and more advanced, and most stem from their technology anyway, they want to close down these productions and focus on things that include advanced buisness packages for the 64 bit line of computing. I really hope ts isnt true, but it probably is. He says that in around 4 or 5 years, the gaming pc will start to become obsolete, as they make way for consoles and media centres.

I have been hearing this same thing for what? over 10 years now... They spin the same info every couple of years and guess what? They are still selling TONS of desktop pc's.

Looks like they are going to drop the price of the AM2 stuff as well.. Figures I just bought a 3800+X2 for 297 and less then a month later they are going to drop the 5000+ X2 to 282!!!

Here is the scoop on bit-tech http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/07/19/amd_confirms_upcoming_price_drops/

yes but as he was saying, the market has really slumped since consoles like the xbox and xbox 360, and since a console is a qauter of the price of even the cheapest gaming rigs, they really do feel as though theyre flogging a dead horse. Intel and AMD want to bring everything together in a cheaper package, and aim it soley as media centres for tv and dvd, and supply buisness machines. And as such are beginning to include everything on a mobo. And to be honest, seeing as hes one of only 6 Intel Senior field engineers in England.. i can take his word for it. Gaming will go down the pan as consoles steal the revenue from the Desktop gaming world.

Sat with a couple of Intel engineers today at lunch and mentioned this post to them. They said that intel makes plenty of money on the desktop processors and has no plan to stop making them. The one area that they are cutting back on is the _marketing_ of the desktop procs. They also mentioned that there were discussions at intel on merging a couple of processor lines, but that was just a brainstorm meeting.

Again, I have heard this same argument since the days of the nes, and intel and amd just keep selling more and more desktop processors and sinking more and more R&D into said procs. They will not be going away anytime in the near future.

I personally do not own any game consoles. I play all my games on a pc. Cheaper titles, better graphics, MODS, etc. (although the xbox360 on an HD monitor is close). Console makers sell their hardware below cost and make it up in the game cost. (sounds like a drug dealer...)

aye my mums bf mentioned the merging of a few lines aswell. But it was concerning when he said intel were heading away from games. I guess ill just keep my fingers crossed that AMD and intel don't start to cut back on said lines. Besides, if they do, i wreckon companies into the games side, such as nVidia and ATI and all of their affilliates (gainward, gigabyte, xfx and the likes) would start to produce their own processors.

I know this thread is old but I just have to come in and say, you all were right the Conroe's are way better. In fact I have one in my comp now... My friend (Aaron, im just going to say his name), is sorda mad and wished he had waited. Check out my comp, I get about 85fps in Oblivion on full graphics (6x AA, 16x AF) @ 1920x1200, where he gets about 100fps with the same settings. He wasn't too happy about that either...

Meh I got that one beat.

I didn't have the Conroes in and the freaking AM2 STILL haven't hit my store yet, thanks AMD for shooting me in the foot. So I sold what I had, and what I had was:

Athlon X2 4800+
4 GB Corsair XMS
3 x 250GB SATA 3.0 WD HDD RAID 5
1 x 150GB Raptor HDD
2 x EVGA 7950 GXT
Asus A8N32 SLI deluxe
Plextor PX-760A/SW-BL Double Layer 18x DVD-R/RW
Ultra Aluminus case
Silverstone Zeus 650 Watt QUAD 12 volt rails
Arctic cooler 64
Logitech G5 Laser mouse
Logitech G15 Gaming keyboard
Logitech Z5450 wireless 5.1 speakers
Windows XP Pro (64 bit windows was giving him trouble with Itunes of all things so he went back to XP pro)
an Extra 2 years of coverage on everything
Just under $5500 built and out the door.

Remember I have to sell what I have, and I didnt' have much at the beggining of August.

I wish I would have had the Conroes in, he had e6800 written all over him. The guy comes to me and says he wants the best thing he can buy, and oh... by the way... I just got a huge trust fund...

The best part, the guy is a hippy, all he does is travel around and go to concerts and stuff. He does work but more to keep himself busy than anything. The guy was an awesome customer, he was totally understanding on a miriad of issues.
