After a short break to do some other things instead of modding i'm starting a new project. I'm planning to post it only on TBCS, because it will be a long running project, and when i post it everywere everyone knows it and the suprise factor will be less. But offcourse i need some feedback, and i think TBCS can, because there are more model bulding people around here.

The idea: Also a bit to suprise, but it should be a alien witch has a crash or accident so he has some bloody wounds, broken leg etc. so they took care about him in a special alien hospital. How does a alien hospital look like? You will see...

I was a bit confused about the name, if it's correct english and a good name for this mod. Suggestions are welcome offcourse. The good thing is that there are only 1300 google results, far less than "alien crash" or "alien illness". Always handy when people searching this project.

The project does exsist of 2 important parts: The alien and the case. First i want to do the alien, it gives me more ideas for the case and time to figure out the exact dimensions. Offcourse the case will have a extremely hi-tech/industrial look. Lots of cable's, sttrange alien materials, blood and tools.

So i started with a small test model made of foam and putty, but that didn't work out too well. I decided to start working with clay.

My dad often comes home with some old parts from his job. For example this cool grill. By rotating the wheel left you can open and close it.

I havn't got pics of the head's frame, made of wire. But here it was covered roughly with clay. It's the hardest part because it should be perfect symetric and very detailed. Giving the face a real espression is not that easy either i think.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/45f49df36111138716824f7ec2fc8123/full.jpg
More usefull parts: RVS tubes in various dimensions. Very sci-fi look, if you've seen the matrix or some other movies you probably seen them before.

Wireframe of the body. The left and right side has some small differences, esp. the shoulders because both arms won't be in the same direction.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/73e1de622c70d4d31333aa63d1123ec8/full.jpg
Moving on with the head: time to add detail. I made 2 eyes of 8mm black plexi. Mounted them with some self drying clay and a 20.000mcd green led beyond them.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/a4e63ff355ad8bfbbc7a57409a0dd05d/full.jpg
You can barely see trough the eyes due to the black/smoke color.

At 1 of the pics you can see a small piece of silver foil. I glued that with some disance behind the eyes to provide a reflector for the led's. The effect is realy cool, the lens effect combined with a reflector made of silver foil creates a nice light effect. It changes under each direction/movement.

Babelfish says this is a "oesophagus", the hollow pipe were food goes trough. It's the main part of his ring, together with a RVS tube. (or might i will replace it. Not shure.)

Well that's it for now.

Good work already, I'm looking forward to see how this all fits into the case. You might want to search for the Area 51 "Alien Autopsy" video for a few more ideas (although it looks as though you have enough ideas to see you through).

Hey, this looks pretty cool. It's an original idea too-i don't think many people would consider an alien hospital, they'd probably go for an alien spaceship, or military site, but i can see where you're going and this looks really good so far.

Keep up the good work-i hope to see a lot more from you!

Oh, and that grill does look pretty cool.

Thanks, the tip for alien movies was usefull :) i've fond some movies on google video about it. Depending on the time i have left this week, the head could might be finished next weekend. But only the clay/forming stuff (mounted his teeth today). The paint should waith until the rest of the body is done.

I like it very professional work. Will you be brush painting this or will you be using an airbrush?

_ferry_

Brush painting :)
My mom does something with brushing ceramic. So she has a lot of paint, brushes and she knows some nice effects. My sister has a airbrush and i tried it a few times, but i think brushing should work fine here.

Sorry for the late update, i was busy with some other things, like bulding a new subwoofer. But i couldn't resist getting my hands on the alien, and worked out some details:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/122076bc4d702fb4c2168f05254abcad/full.jpg
The eyes have a smooth junction with the skin. (All the bright clay is self-hardening, other clay is oven-clay.)

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/8965de8f638e98f40a8e034d708b2e5a/full.jpg
Teeths were mounted in some clay. Note it will be sanded etc.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/e3e4cdc6ef545046c17467097e6a2d14/full.jpg
The top of his head. Trough the mesh you'll see the "brains". Wich are actually exist of a small HDD, some PCB's and fibers. A digital brain hehe ;)

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/c29d17f81df81e4b73a33665b5e92775/full.jpg
The blood wich should "run" trough his veins should come from somewhere... Ecaxtly, the small tube should do the trick. 2 of them leaves the body and enters the head form both sides. Later i should figure out how to make a nice blood-like liquid. tips/sugesstions? No need to have the liquid flowing trough the tube, as long as it looks like there is a liquid in it it's OK.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/1a16559187983ca82ace1337caad2c30/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/27212a9ccc56fb850f052cb7162816bc/full.jpg
Look, brains 8) I replaced the metal spacers with acrylic ones. Just put 2 green led's in it and the platters will light up awesome!

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/99ddbaa809717a63bab4169b2d078e6f/full.jpg
The fibers were feed trough a spiral made from very thin metalwire. It prevents braking them and looks very technical. here are 2 fibers on each side, Rx and TX with red and green light.

I've polished/cleaned the grill, and found a usefull motor for it, works on 12v and has a slip meganism on it so it doesn't mather if the motor runs a bit longer than it should.

Finaly a new update.

I'm back from a hollyday trip, did some work and other important modding/hobby's and now there is time for modding again. I realy need to, before i would forget all the ideas i have. To make it even worse i've lost some paintings and idea's i've made.

Anyway, i bought a new tool:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/d90ef5d5ac5bd83f7f99aef33c9f341d/full.jpg
Normaly i cut acryl with dremel, this should work much better with less heat, noise and dust.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/0c0032b142078ee0b55faecbe1b102be/full.jpg
The alien is in a hospital, so here is a part of is operation. A open wound in his stomache. It's hard to visualize because you don't see the natural colors, that's making the modding more dificult too.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/5620a5e857ade97e99b18803e86075ce/full.jpg
Head+ body together. Note the difference in both shoulders. The reason for that is that both arms are in different direction. (and it's very hard to work symmetric hehe). The skin is rough, there will be details added like his head. ( veins, scratches/wounds etc.)

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/28667433721010eaa83f07993a46589c/full.jpg
Close-up of the open wound. after painting i hope it's clear that there is a piece of skin flapped away, offcourse with some blood etc.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/06770dd7a6252e642024eccba5ac35fd/full.jpg
The brains. You can barely see 4 fibers on the left side (painted black). With some imagination these act as fiber channels to the HDD. With some led's the brains will produce a nice light effect because there will be light emitted between the HDD platters too :)

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/3d984e90b87ef95aab475f7fec84450d/full.jpg
The wall of fame ;) various newspapers and magazines where i'm in, AFAIK 1 magazine is missing.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/93d21e82931675a0a52491ea0d564492/full.jpg
4 fibers are connected to his head. 2 RX and 2 TX channels. Here you can see the TX channel, with reen led's. All the led's will be connected to a microcontroller to let them blink lika a real data pattern. (or HDD activity)

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/1d9cd53e6ab8e70982c38075f53756d5/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/9cbe241a476a2f593aae1848ebeb1173/full.jpg
His dangerous looking mouth.

That's it. I'm realy hoping to make some fast progress with the brains. I want to know how the head turns out when painted.

the "blood" could be cooling fluid (even water with food dye) but it seems to me as the perfect oportunity for water cooling I'm thinkin' a window covered by thet awesome grill (what I think you had in mid anyway) and some red cold cothodes, or, if you really want some extra ninja points (the international currency of Jacobia) you could buy a cheep disco ball thing
http://www.plustron.com/it020020.jpg
and replace the light bulb with LEDs and all of the translucent things with shades of red and some bright martian green.
Oh, and Jack Bauer will give you some pirate gold

I seem to recall seeing in a movie commentary that they used vegetable oil and food coloring for blood. I don't know whether that would be necessary in this case since it's just going to be sitting in tubes but I figured it was worth a mention.

In any case I agree that the best thing would be to integrate it into a water cooling system.

_ferry_
08-31-2006, 02:13 PM
The grill will be acting like a window yes, but it doesn't need acryl. It can both act like an intake/outtake hole and window.

Intergrating the veins into the watercooling would be difficult. Those small tubes would dramaticaly increase the flow resistance.
But i can make it look like it's in a watercooling circuit. Just a pump, reservoir and some sci-fi looking parts around it. (like its a machine for adding oxigen to blood.) When the water or blood, just how you wanted to call it, is flowing it will be prevented of sinking to the bottom of the reservoir and form a residue.

chedabob
08-31-2006, 03:22 PM
i think if you just add some red food colouring to water you could achieve the colour. it would be cool if you made the veins part of the water cooling system. if you did, you could get some u/v green coolant, and then put u/v leds in various spots to make it glow.

update

It has been a while ago, but i've got a nice update for you:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/790885419b8796de96e7fcf5c6107905/full.jpg
I was planning to make veins on tha alien's body. But it didn't worked out great, because the air-drying clay didn't hold well on the alien his body. (that problem will return in a later stadium :( ). But i had already made some gaps with the dremel. So i decided to make this .... wound (don't know all the english words hehe) instead of veins, to fill up the gaps. After sanding and painting i guess it looks good.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/3cf02e4bed685dd5919e39be108e7e66/full.jpg
Offcourse the alien needs 2 arms, this is his right arm including use of the RVS tubes. This arm will be laying on his body, the left arm in some kind of bracket/bracing because there will be a open wound in it.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/cb3a1f7db3cdd9c59b18f5e917bc2d3a/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/cb4a12de32af1e777caff5fb9b35ac00/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/1cb5b7e01a2673d15374a0031887844d/full.jpg

After baking the right arm and claying the left arm:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/3ab53e1d2fb9f542445b76d3de1402e3/full.jpg

This photo and the following ones are made with my new Canon 400D instead of a fuji S5500, such an inprovement! Need to fine-tune some settings etc. and i'm planning to make a small photostudio with good light conditions. I like casemodding and i like photographing them, so that was 1 of the reasons for a new camera.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/8293a4ff720d624b72acaabd8a76c85f/full.jpg

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/671925da975120684b986f6f832c424d/full.jpg
The left hand/arm is not final, it needs to be much smoother before baking, but that will take quite some time with those small fingers and details. I still considering to ad the same nails on the left hand, but maybe a small saw blade in it would look good either because i think it's nicer to have 2 hand's with both different "weapons".

The hospital will be made when the alien is (almost) finished.

My previous project was supposed to be a case with some spider web's and a spider on the side. But it never came that far, because it took so much time to create the spider. So it's a case with spider webs but no spider :( Due to that i decided to change the building process and start with the alien instead of the case.

Cool, you remember :D

The head of this alien looks better, that spider head was nice but not the way i wanted it. I've been working on the legs too, but i didn't came much further on it.

1 good thing about it: it was a good practice and gave me some good ideas for this alien.

(and now i'm going to add the last details on his arm :) )

New update, with the finished arm:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/616b5cb2f1229885f147a5f3c82fd500/full.jpg

As you can see his left arm weapon is different than the right hand, i took some copper wires. I would like to tell you about the exact function of those but i can't: The alien has never been seen by human, so nobody knows what it does. :D

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/e5cd27b994f9bae4daf4d80dbdda338d/full.jpg
The open wound in his arm. I made a spring from some wire and put some wires in it.

I bought some styrene to start detailing the brains. Those should look like a computer, IC's, HDD and communication with the body. I showed some pictures before of the platters. Now it's time for the read/write heads, they look boring without any connections/controller, so i ended up today with this:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/187ca1a3836a9b2f8b61f155bb2d1c32/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/b5b79d597b3deb2cb84706ad2ad05f21/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/f2d995328fe4721f71f9b3fa1ce9641c/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/6f879489f190db7d5323d7abdf1a8b17/full.jpg
The flatcable will be fit with some glue onto the styrene. Below the styrene base 4 fiber wires act as communication channels.

Note it's a laptop-HDD, the styrene base is only about 1x1.5cm. I've never build with styrene before, but i like it! Details can be added exact the way i want, but it took quite some time.

I'm thinking of ordering a simple airbrush. I don't have any troubles with brushing and brush effects, but parts like this are hard to brush due too the deep gaps. They are sold at e-bay for +/- 40€ so it's worth the try :) . Can i connect them to a normal compressor instead of a special airbrush compressor? And almost every waterbased paint can be used? Any other important things i should know about it?

Sunday evening means update time :P

I've been working on the top of his head as i showed you in the last update. Time to move on with that.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/cb20e305c1362110d416e30a9bbafbf3/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/d4e49fa45c1a0febb8622122c886c7c6/full.jpg
Here you can see his head, with the HDD and some styrene works, a small fan (2cm) with some kind of circuit around it.

I made a cover for his brains before:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/fe277d8440146f0e0d84476617226a2b/full.jpg
But i wasn't totally happy with the result. That's the reason why I've painted it, because i wanted to try how the color turns out. Quite like skin color isn't it? We'll come back on the paint stuff later.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/3c3c0e71644c5a115be633cf4f7cb4e7/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/727dfa1e022997406565fc28dc1fe0b9/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/23790c025617d54c189bf68e05173457/full.jpg
This was the new idea, plexiglas shapes with clay between them. Nice idea, but it looks like ****.

Oh well, the paint stuff:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/d041db829757895b7db6740de6a339eb/full.jpg
I've ordered a nice airbrush pistol with some colors, those on the left are for the alien, those 'ecoline' colors on the right are for brushing on paper to get the airbrush feeling.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/1a352fa89506424fa0d63026fcb0d6a7/full.jpg
The pistol itself was even better looking as i thought, because it's some kind of new model. On the website the adjusting screw was on the edge of the back, without gold color. I've been brushing the whole saturday, flame's, stripes, dots, circle's, thunders etc. It's hard to learn, but painting the alien isn't that difficult as flames. (At least, i hope so)

OK, were back:

The idea is the same, but now with more straight lines, going from left to right instead of a random pattern. Both left and right are better in balance when we look at the shape and there is less clay between the acryl. It's drying now, and lets hope the clay holds on the acryl. When the clay is hard i will add details with my dremel.

Hopefully i can start painting and brushing soon. But i need some advice for that.

I'm thinking about that skin color I showed above, but that would might look too much like a human bod? A darker color, like green, grey or black, with some highlights would be better? Just like The Alien (http://www.statueforum.com/statuearchive/news/data/upimages/1136201465.jpg) It's almost complete black. But my idea is to give all the details like veins, tubes, finger skin etc. a slightly different color.

hey ferry!

i really like your alien! You´re doing a great job!!

me and my brother also have 1 alien project in the backhand which is paused at the moment (all those body parts are lying around.....like in a weird horror film) i think we will start finallizing it in the next month´s.

But i have one question, the open HDD in the Head? is it used for anything or just to decorate the head in some way?

The idea to use alufoil for modulating the single body parts is really good and i think a lot easier than using foam.....(like we did)

Hi! Alien's are cool hehe, guess you have a nice theme/case for it as well?

The HDD is only for decoration, it's an old laptop disc, and already crashed before i opened it. There is no circuit board, only the platters and read/write heads.

I was quickly reading some books from my mom, about making gnomes and other clay models. Those were made with metal wire and foil. That was the base for my alien.
Using foam would be impossible, because that would melt direct when backing the Sculpey clay @ 150c celcius. Off course you could use foam, when using self hardening materials. Note that foams gets affected by putty, strong glue, paint and other stuff.

Only 1 thing that could might give some trouble: Connecting all the body parts together with the self hardening clay. That clay is hard to stick on other materials. It's a bit elastic, but I'm petty sure that it would cause cracks when bending the arms too much. So when all the parts are connected i must be very careful and put the alien in a stable position.

This is great. I'll be interested to see how your airbrushing goes. I almost bought one a year ago for a completely different project, but didn't due to cost.

Thanks, It was about 110€ for airbrush and paint. For a project like this it's worth the money, and i really feel like doing more with it. Brushing some flames on my bicycle for example. My girlfriend likes it too :D
I should be able to paint the alien with small brushes, that was also the plan. But airbrushing will work much faster and easier, and "good tools are half the work" an old dutch sentence says.

BTW, spell check in firefox is very nice! Previously I've made plenty of mistakes, while i was thinking it was correctly spelled hehe

Perhaps you all ready answered your question - but you don't need an airbrush compressor to run your airbrush.

If you are going to buy a compressor for it, however, I recomend getting one with at last a small air tank to keep the air flow consistent.

Yeah i was searching on the Internet for a answer, but actually i found the answer right at home: There are 2 condense removers on it, because my dad also used the compressor for a base coat on his oldtimer car.
The tank is 100liter, not very small, but good enough for my basic experience hehe.

Update,

As i planned, i started with painting some parts, to be able to start with the next steps.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/3d2320cec1caacb5f71af0efc78336b0/full.jpg
The brains were airbrushed black, with some dark grey at the styrene parts, to make them a little bit more visible once the cover has been placed.

I was worried when i sprayed the black layer, because on the clay it was scratch resistant, but it wasn't at all on the styrene. But after the mat clear coat it became quite strong. I guess a primer should work in this situation. I should order some more paint and clear coat anyway.

I decided to engrave some various figures into it.

Next thing to do was painting the mouth, because i can't paint the inside once it has been mounted.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/d98be12a0143ae09ba6fbbfae476a208/full.jpg
It really looks like Michael Jackson!

Big black eyes, small nose, and large red lips. Is this evidence that Michael is a alien? hehe

Thanks!

I wish a could have posted a update past Sunday, but I've been quite busy. But today i made "a small step for a man, but a giant step for a alien" :p

As you might remember there were a few steps to be done before i could start painting the head. I've done that 2 weeks ago, and today i was able to paint it.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/a43226b166b4b11e0f2533adea00067d/full.jpg
Here you can see his head and top together, fitted with clay offcourse.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/014795f289196dd79edbabcf8d38ecc1/full.jpg
I supposed it would be nice if there is some pattern in the clay. So i did some engraving (quite boring, it took ages). And sanded it to get it nice and smooth.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/858c6175860c8272db5b29447525453f/full.jpg
My girl agrees: boring! She decided to play a game. :lick:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/5f805e1e6f156faa182e0a8fa3816799/full.jpg
After some mixing and testing i made this color, it will be the base for the alien skin.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/544a04f7a9d70e53f334faec13535a03/full.jpg
Finished his teeth. I wanted them a little bit more yellow, i reached that by adding a little bit of yellow by the clear coat. Teeth's are now dirty & blinking. :)

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/9953563573aeed5020318332eb0612e9/full.jpg
Let's put it together. I also attached a RVS tube because i found out his neck was a bit small compared to the rest of his body.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/8599fa98f14c4bf934e134c2738e48a0/full.jpg
Some clay added to create his mouth.

Well, that's it.....
For 2 weeks ago, here is the rest:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/2036ec5f1208a31a8624665ee2b56789/full.jpg
After sanding his mouth i added the first layer of paint.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/eebd6ea3102c83f296535772ef0b32ea/full.jpg
These pictures were made after the green, red and brown paint. While painting a saw many small scratches etc. with were hardly visible before painting. I've been sanding enough so i kept it that way. A human skin isn't perfect either.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/5511fdd21bf8da7076d9226a01cddde8/full.jpg
I put some darker green in the patterns on the top.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/cbb213b5cd6a6498ce72f594e68e05ea/full.jpg
And airbrushed some brown too.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/54be4e46c6389be755d5fdffc9211480/full.jpg

Here's 1 large image, because the details are hardly visible at the pictures above:
click! (http://tweakers.net/ext/f/d9377a974a1b923b615a0c5bb9853af8/full.jpg)

That's it, I'm very satisfied with the result. 8)
Last to do with his head is adding a clear coat. I've been testing with clear coats in my airbrush, but the result was far away from acceptable. So i might give it a try with a normal spray can. Should work without problems.

BTW, 107 pictures in this topic so far, i guess that's been reached in +/- 80hours of modding. It would might be funny to see how many hours i will spend up at this case so i'm tring to count them. This update took me about 8,5 hours.

Thanks guy's.
Lasers will be used :) I've been working with LED's and fiber, there are green led's in his brain which light up the fibers, but that effect is hard to see in daylight circumstances. So replacing them with lasers (on the other end of the fiber) can improve the light output dramatically. All connected to micro controller or switches, depending on the effect.

They ain't that expensive, i ordered them, red diode, 5mW, and they cost about 4€. I'm waiting for information about the green lasers, those will be a bit expensive, but hopefully worth the price when comparing them to green led's in a situation where they should light up the fibers.

There will also be another light effect in the case, already made a prototype, and the effect is OK. Hopefully i can put it in this mod.
I'm working a lot with led's, got about 3000 on stock of them hehe. And plenty of green and some UV led's will be used in this case, no CCFL's, I'm not able to do the things i want to do with them due to their larger size.

Cool... Well let me know how it goes, can't wait to see more pictures. If you can, post a list of the hardware specs... I love to see what others use to make their pcs hum.

_ferry_

Hardware specs? Don't know, i'm not a hardware geek, i have a AMD s939 X2 3500+, 2x80GB, 1GB, 6800ultra, and that's good enough for me, i'm not a gamer, i rather spend my time on modding hehe. So when this mod is almost done i will take a look at the hardware specs. Contact some sponsors etc.

Anyway, i might could use your advice:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/c10275b82d13f3b1e07706f840370772/full.jpg

Following some calculation, a creative mind and drawings his legs should be a good length. But the alien is now 75cm long. And i was planning to build the case that long... So shall i cut off 5cm of his legs or make the case 80cm long? I think long legs are looking good, because of his small body, long arms and his chest and shoulders will have some skin that will be pointing outwards.

That does might need a picture to describe:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/e1ea8d59b73cc9d3e07a33f85c554df8/full.jpg
Phear my paint skills. Here you see his shoulders and chest pointing outwards, they will also have a little different color from the rest with some engraving.

jdbnsn
12-17-2006, 08:58 AM
That is looking awesome! I wouldn't shorten the legs any more, I think aliens looks better with long skinny legs vs short stubby ones. Another option is bending the legs at the knee.

DaveW
12-17-2006, 03:13 PM
haha...can we call him stubby? He's like an alien hobbit.

Another option is bending the legs at the knee.

I think this would be a good idea, if not a must have. Or you could sever the legs at the 'knee' and make it look like something has hacked his legs away.

Or...if it doesn't ruin your plan...sever the legs and put him in a wheel chair... :)

These are just ideas i'm throwing out there. The legs look a little short to me, but the rest looks utterly fantastic. Looking forward to seeing him up and about!

You could probably come up with any number of more natural positions for the legs and I think it would add tremendously to the overall look. I know he's in the hospital, but he looks a little too rigormortis. He needs some contrapposto detail to enhance the realism.

Ok, i don't get all the technical english words hehe, but i think what you guys mean. Thanks, it's good to have some feedback :)
The plan was to give 1 leg a large gap in it with a lot of blood an a direct view to his bones. But hacking it off would be funny too :D That means even more blood, bones and wires coming out of his leg hehe.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/883b8066ef3f967e6f3c490c6446ac53/full.gif

Positioning the hacked off leg is lot easier: 1 leg cutted of around his knee, lying straight, with some 'rag' (babelfish word) around it. On the picture his left leg is a bit bended around his knee, in such a way his feet is pointing outwards.

Note that 1 arm is in normal position with his hand on his body, like you might do the same when laying on your back. The other arm will be in some kind of clamps to act like some kind of medical machine. That's why it's lying straight to his body.

DaveW
12-18-2006, 03:44 PM
I have an idea...you could give him a single robotic leg with damage, coupled with an organic leg with damage? It would go with the theme. I'm still thinking the legs look too short somehow.

Nice, by the way, I completely forgot to ask this. What's the diagnosis, trauma? Rigormortis is when a body has been dead for a short time it gets very stiff and the arms and legs become difficult to bend. This goes away after some time but usually long after the body is out of the hospital. The contrapposto term is used to describe an innovation in sculpture by the Greeks who improved on the Egyptian style (picture the sculptures with perfectly straight arms and legs) by making the figure stand relaxed and uneven to disperse body weight more realisticly. Try lying down in exactly the position the alien is and then find a more comfortble position to see if it would look good on the alien. Sometimes a very subtle composition change like this can add so much to your work it's suprising. Also, will there be a heart monitor? Cause that would be cool as hell!

Thank you very much! Sure I'll keep up the good work

Heart monitor shouldn't be a problem if i have a way to make a AVI or whatever with a heartbeat display. I can put my GF up too that, she's familair with AVI's, editting and recording etc. I have a psone display laying around for this project. Also some other displays like a large 64x128 touch screen and 4x20LCD's. Later i will try to find out wich i can control by PC or microcontroller. (good for baybus too)

About the diagnose: Something like a UFO crash. So he may have a lot of wounds and blood etc. On his arm there is a open wound, on his stomach too, a little blood on his head and next are his legs.

I think it looks great when there is no feet anymore, only a sheet of wrapped skin and bones (made of steel) and wires pointing outwards. The other feet could be made of metal. In that way it could look like he lost 1 metal feet, or that they're working to give him 2 metal feets after a accident. People could use they're own imagination on that :)

Well, lets try your advice and do some testing about his position. His back has a bit too much clay on it, lets first remove that to get a more flat back and spend some time on the size of his shoulders. If that's done, the arms will have a better position too.

Hi, I only just came across this mod, looks great! If you are having issues fitting him in, I think the gory detached torso method may appeal and would also give you an excuse for more gory chunks

Thanks guys!

That photshop example looks very good! i don't think it would be a problem if the case is a little longer to fit his legs, so it's not a 'must' to cut his legs off above his knee. And in fact, a healty alien should fit the case as well.
So a long and short leg is also a option and if i have the time for it this weekend, then i wil do some claywork and collect/build metal parts which should look like his bones or knee etc. Whe have a lot of scrapy parts around here that could do the job for that.
Can't wait to give it some progress, led's and lasers (only the red ones, green has some delivery/stock problems) should be here within a few days too.
(i just came back from a holiday in Denmark)

Guys, first a happy new year! may it bring many modding wishes come true hehe.

I'm working on his legs atm. The left one is cutted just below his knee, including metal knee/bones and various tubes and wires which are broken off at that point. The same for his right leg, but that's one is a few cm shorter so it stops above his knee. quite like the PS picture above :)

Here are his legs, steaming hot, right out of the oven. The bolt should be replaced with something else wich looks more realistic.

Well, that's almost all i have to show, last thing is my garage, it was such a mess i decided to change some things and clean it up. Such a hell of a job!

After 3 hours of work.

2 desks were moved, the one for the computer was too small, while the photo desk was very large, so i switched and now i have a lot more space.

The blacklite has been switched with a normal TL light. Another improvement is the huge blue dremel toolbox (in the middle of the 1'th picture), i placed all the parts and bits in a smaller box in a tray, easy and clean.

I'm not finished, but it's starting to look clean hehe :)

Sunday's update time

Time to connect his legs to the body part with polyester. I've never used that stuff before, but my thoughts were right: It's a very strong way to bind the parts together.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/0bde0b50002659b210e110381de17554/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/3f862e2c3da473261e862679249b0ded/full.jpg
I took a piece of wood with screws to create some kind of mall to position the alien before the polyester is applied.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/3f2e352e19a6caf9fdbb323a5eb703d3/full.jpg
After applying.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/c3ef95b7719e0ae6ae436268743c9cc6/full.jpg
The head was still waiting for a clear coat. I used matte coat on the overall skin, and some glossy around his eyes, mouth and veins. That's more realistic, see for yourself in the mirror that the skin around your eyes is more shiny.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/cb749cc6cea4ad43112edd9b3c641b9b/full.jpg

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/a00d0be43aa9e6b53c1f2202e5eb5cda/full.jpg
Software thought it would be good to flip the image, and i forgot to flip it back. Sorry!

Back to his legs:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/8c67ce11aebe12282e6aea66daf4fd6f/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/e1e12a7e1c1f40008ac43b9825b16de6/full.jpg
From now on, it's 'her' not his hehe, when the clay is hard i can finish that part hehe :p

Above the legs i'm planning to put this:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/3b3bab77e2c5c21e48603d9fce9c6abd/full.jpg
Otherwise it's so empty, the metal points will be growing out of the skin, hanging a bit above the mesh, acting like a protection shield.
ps: wanna guess where the points came from?

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/05914ce2ef26afcd59c18f28bc3f2f66/full.jpg
I wasn't shure if the difference in material (clay from his legs and the polyester) would be visible trough the paint. I added some green paint and saw no difference, only some bubbles, gaps etc. in the polyester which i was sanding away at this picture.

Uhh, no chastity belt, it will be placed higher:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/eef63dcf287f29a772a02e166fcfd2ad/full.jpg

It's maybe not easy to see on the pictures because the legs/body aren't painted, but that area looks so flat and boring. I thought it would be good to add some metal, so there is on his arms and legs.
(i've made the mesh a little bit smaller after the picture was taken)

I could also add a 'umbilical point' above it, like a electrical -or- hose connector

jdbnsn
01-14-2007, 05:09 PM
I think that metal mesh would look cool if made into a arm-gaurd looking device maybe around one wrist that extends halfway up the arm and has little blinking LED's that reflect vital signs.

_ferry_
01-14-2007, 05:28 PM
Good idea, like a 1337-functions-in-1-watch :P But the left arm will be in some kind of clamp/medical device with led's, sensors etc. I could do it on his right arm. With styrene i can make a nice small watch. Like a tokio flash watch (http://www.tokyoflash.com)

I could put a PCB beneath the mesh, eventually with some led's? There is another PCB shown in a wound at his stomach, as shown on the pictures, that should match nicely i guess.

OK, i quickly worked out the idea yesterday and also today before going to bed (it's 21:48 here, and tomorrow i'm doing my car driving examination.)

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/a6fa0820d4e79a779a27a66513692e81/full.jpg
I found 2x 7-segment LED displays at work, very usable for this project. The plan is to show random blinking segments, like it's having a short circuit while sometimes showing the letters "AH' (Alien Hospital). Off course controlled by a micro controller, that's why they are multiplexed. Other led's will be controllable as well.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/98b7cc688efa0775d62727ec35c1b699/full.jpg
Here you see the mesh+acryl, the acryl is pressed into the hole i cut into the body.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/109f9464757fa35d98decdf69b869b37/full.jpg
Only problem is that the letters are barely visible trough the mesh. I should look if i have some more open mesh, otherwise i can solve it by only using acrylic.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/f9823859bf520d465d2d149ce3f997e5/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/7f9301c2291a8e62b08a80059eb0cb36/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/c192012c46c2636842b7653735db2029/full.jpg
That will look like this.

Offcourse the acryl will be mounted nicely, so the rough cut doesn't mather at all. Simply with some clay around it for the looks and behind it to prevent pressing it into the body.

Clickable, those strips (2 of them) with 8 red LED's will be put at the floor next to his door, even when you're drunk, this light should show you where the door is.

Anyway, that's done, it's now all about sanding and sanding and ehm, touching up his skin with sanding hehe. Quite boring and takes a lot of time.

I've been watching alien vs predator yesterday. I was thinking right: It realy gave me a lot of good idea's like the symbols/text, the way objects look like etc. Hopefully i can show that in the case itself. When starting this project i didn't want to build a alien that would look like the alien from the alien movie, because people would say "the real alien is less tall over there, and his skin is darker, you know, they will search for differences. By now i created my own alien, so there is no reference :)

Hehe, i wish i don't. I rather have a belt like this:

I sanded some more on the alien's legs, and gave it a layer of plastic primer to fill small gaps etc. Only 1 problem was the clay, it has been shrinking. So i need to touch up some of the edges because there came small gaps between clay and polyester :(

Anyway, i'm also working on another project, not as big as this one, to be able to participate at the dutch casemod contest.

Update, well, i did some modding on the alien, but that's just sanding, sanding etc. Not realy interesting. But last thing to finish is his ass, then i can start painting his legs/hips/ass. Hope to start with that within 2 weeks.

Anyway, i made a picture of the rough construction of the 2'nd case i'm building:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/ac172b61d6f1fa7652d44f7afd84220f/full.jpg
The foil stuff on the side is the meshX protection foil.

Something quite different because i feel good when having some variation in casemodding (sanding the alien is totally different than welding a case together.

It can be used as a tower, but when needed also as a desktop. Pipes are 30x30mm, and the corners are going to give this case sweet eye candy...

Well, here i am, back with a update.

Before someone ask why the banners/text on the photos are missing, i'm currently at 1 of my other PC's, because i'm upgrading my main pc, and I'm to lazy to install the software at this PC ;) (Still waiting at OCZ and ABIT to recieve the hardware i need for it.)

Anyway, i've been working at 1 of the 2 instruments which will be holding the alien's left arm. This one has some kind of antenna on it, the other one will have cables and connectors to plug into the alien.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/256f0ad9b39fd3914427d287e937af95/full.jpg
It's already primered, the led is not working (why should a antenna emit light?) but is just for the show, like a glass insulator. The dimension of the base is +/- 2,5"x1,25" / 6x2,5cm So yes, it's a small thing ;)

The 2nd thing i've done is airbrushing his legs:

There will be 2 paired cables (very thin ones, from a 80p ata rounded cable) coming out of those 2 strips on the front, leading to the alien.
In the display above it i'll try to add a printed text/logo/whatever.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/3e23f44a1326d28c8915f378c6a9019b/full.jpg
Connected with 2mm thin RVS wire

I'm still not shure if i should use a readable font, or something total "alien" we can't read. The font will be used for example at the small display above, on other instruments and maybe a logo or name on the case. Any ideas? There are also fonts wich are very alien like, but still readable.

So, now you can stop thinking about it :D

I'll be using the "omikron" font:
example text (http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=omikron&page=1&nb_ppp_old=10&text=alien+hospital&nb_ppp=10&psize=m&classt=alpha)

Why this one? Because the letters don't look like normal letters, the shape is complete different. But once you recognize them you can read the text, so it's still usable for the name of this mod and on a display etc. There are many sci-fi fonts, but most of them look to much like normal letters do, and i don't think aliens would write like we do ;)

Yea, I got a block of the sculpey. The Foil saves your clay, Im glad I saw that.
Kinda Practicing with the stuff. . Only thing I dont like is if it stays in the oven to long it gets all bubbled up and crappy lookin.

I'll Shut up now. . as not to Interrupt your worklog.

No problem, a worklog is to share ideas and help others. Yeah, don't put it in too long, but after some sanding and maybe a good primer the skin can be smoothened?

It has been a while since the last update, but the good news is that the alien is 99% finished :D

I've been sanding down a lot to get the right shape into his shoulders. Too bad i dropped my airbrush, so i have to wait for some spare parts before i can start painting.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/7fea9b808c3c4c55a54d8d9e45eb3fc4/full.jpg
This was the hardest point, still there are some tiny gaps/holes, but the paint will fill them, or i might sand them away later this week.

In the meanwhile i received a lot of hardware from sponsors:

Very attractive memory from Corsair, i decided to go for 4GB because Vista and Adobe Lightroom both loves Gig's

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/8cb191c7ede895c7398e6e52e96b78c4/full.jpg
For the time being i'm using it in my normal system, so i can use the previously installed hardware to measure the alien's case.

The Motherbord is sponsored by ECS and Videocard by sapphire. I received more, but that's for another upcoming casemod ;)

And also a great new tool:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/14d72fb683ac7fb9c412c02e74d9e57d/full.jpg
I've been thinking a long time if i did better choose this one or a x-y table for a normall drilling station (we have 2 of them). But finally i went for this one, because it's specially designed for small and detailed work. I think he will be very usefull when making frontplates etc. with switches. They will be perfectly aligned.

Currently i'm looking for a set of steppers+controllers to make a CNC machine of it. imaging yourself nameplates, waterblocks etc. engraved and cutted by this thing ;) A upgrade would cost as much as the machine itself but well worth it, a standard CNC machine would still cost a lot more than that.

WTF,

I was checking out my topic to see if someone had replied on my update... But it seems that i've forgotten to click on the post reply button. So here it is again (but with a little shorter text):

I Decided to start building a siccor, a real operation room needs operation tools offcourse, like siccors, tweezers, a sharp knife etc. It's also a good test to see how my proxxon tool works. And i have to waith for replacement parts for the airbrush anyway, and i should buy a sheet of aluminium to build the case itself.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/07457d9701781bd617833da2b1597675/full.jpg
First i dutted the rough shape, the inside of the handles were done with the proxxon mill. The rest was done with a electric saw. The material is 3mm aluminum from a old 19" front panel.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/5deb64111394eaff6bd4e673207c90cf/full.jpg
Size comparision

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/097bd2a5a41ff165f3dd652193ea6176/full.jpg
Another comparision. I copied the siccor at 50% and used that as a template. Note i removed some aluminium to make the blades of the siccor. That was the hardest part. The mill was working very slow (or i have the wrong bits), a dremel was inaccurate, and a sanding belt was going slow as well and made my fingers almost burn by the heat ;) But finally i combined it all, and i removed the aluminum.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/4c721422185ac331576310b9a34658ef/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/d24bdcdfea5c55b4fbba6f0eca0ccf89/full.jpg
After sanding and polishing.

The bolt is no the final one, but it was a taptite to create the treath. I'm shure i'll find a smaller one to replace this one. Total building time was +/- 5,5 hours. But it's worth the time.

I'l have to build them all anyway, but which one should be nr2? I was thinking about a knife or siccor, so i can try how the mill works when engraving.
What tool to build next? You can decide!

Yet another tool has been made, the tweezer:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/f59e3fb112856718401270b234bb435c/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/b32cbbb29fade86336ced08104fd8572/full.jpg
We start with these 2 sides which will be glued together once finished. The one at the front had already some polishing.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/97d5b340819adca8401b3cb5a73abe00/full.jpg
After more polishing and gluing the 2 parts together. I don't think it's realy necessary to polish them to the max. It should look like RVS, not chrome. The case itself won't be shiny as well. It's the industrial look ;)

The engraving has been done with the proxxon. Offcourse, cause doing this by hand is impossible. The actual size is +/- 7CM

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/8474054096cbe7c6b7832662b6f68747/full.jpg
Both sides have a little difference in height, you can only see that at the point where they are glued together.....
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/dd1f681bbc3dfc5871427bad27153fa2/full.jpg
...But once the glue was hardened i sanded the sides down and gave the rear edge a nice round finish.

Building time: 4 hours.

Next? I think 2 grips, 1 for organic stuff, and 1 for the metal screws as used in the alien's knee. After that i think i have enough skills and ideas to build a replacement leg, existing of aluminum and other sci-fi stuff.

I thought tweezers would bve right, because electro technicians use that word too afaik? Well, glad i'm not a surgeon. I noticed that i wrote scissor on the wrong way as well :P

Scalpel is important too yeah, i've forgotten to name it, but i have one at my work (very useful when repairing PCB's) and that made me think of maikng one.

Instead of electrodes i'm considering nails with fibers connected to it. Got that from a Matrix scene (where neo has just entered the matrix).

Syringe is a must have, ill make one :)

Next part is the syringe:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/723e61f19f8d4bfc7b083af184101d44/full.jpg
A 0,5mm thin sheet of aluminum was used to cut this part out.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/8dab074bef11796e9bf7ed8fd4eec70d/full.jpg
This is the level indicator, a small cutout with 5 lines.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/569708cc4d6f33a7f613924d2885404c/full.jpg
After a lot of detailed sanding and some quick ploshing it looks like this.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/1a9395be6f3bfeac2b139fb7e93e8fc9/full.jpg
Offcourse there must be a reservoir, it's made of a old CCFL tube. I glued a piece of 3mm acrylic on top of it. But i decided 3mm was too much, so i milled it off:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/77886397387b64af887fd26379d3c17f/full.jpg
Now the end is much smaller, and the junction is hardly noticable after polishing.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/b16d66d30f6e5d802b56aae11dce0a1c/full.jpg
And after folding the aluminum it looks like this.

The rough design of the grip.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/b1ecf7815d683c1d5e571a9d13024534/full.jpg
And after polishing.

The indicator cut doesn't seems to be 100% straight, IRL it's hardly noticable (note that this thing is really small) But i'll try to sand it away. Shouldn't bee too difficult :)

Next thing to do is to build the thing i don't know the name for ;) I mean the rear part which you push into the syringe. But i need to find the right diameter(+/-3mm) of aluminum tube for that. I might have to buy some when buying aluminum for the case itself.

Hey, thanks for the ideas!

The only one which i already thougt of was the lights. More into a shape like this:
http://img.alibaba.com/photo/50250676/Shadowless_Operation_Light.jpg
With a adjustable arm made of plastic/metal. As light source a 1watt led with a few smaller leds surrounding.

Metal-working tools: yes, some of these:
http://www.essaco.com/images/product/images/11450.jpg In a nice modern alien-look CNC style. Very usefull since his bones are connected with bolts and nuts.

Anyway, i've got a new update. I wasn't in the mood of the intensive work to create another instrument, so i started with modding the monitor.
The idea is, that once i have a little start i can think of some ideas to work out on it. Drawnings doesn't always give you all the ideas you could really use, while modding you create things and solutions you'd never thought about.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/a5e9816ae5e2c6b545df81c0e508dd9a/full.jpg
Let's start with some plastic sheet which i grabbed out of the garbage @ work and a 12" trouchscreen.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/1d7c122f37797728db5662fd6d80d7b7/full.jpg
And after some cutting, straighten the edges and gluing them together we have this.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/b781af34c73801097ecad4eb57b0e898/full.jpg
Hmm, a fingerprint reader, usefull ;)

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/19ba22faf7226b757230bbbc4a331114/full.jpg
Before mounting the fingerprint reader i roughly cut the hole for the display. After that i was able to determinate the exact size and position of the display and his cutout.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/b1a03eeca5160d43f5efbaa3b9fb234e/full.jpg
And the rear side. The base will be mounted on this part, but i'm still thinking about the design of it. And maybe i should add another instrument beneath the monitor, i have the space anyway. A defibrillator would be cool :D

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/079641184d140df25f93bb26df7e24b8/full.jpg
A cutout with some mesh and styrene. The grey case is just rough. All the details like this will be done with styrene.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/f7116c83f55b2e13e33c32af9339b736/full.jpg
A fan in a monitor? Yes, i don't know if i need it, but you would hardly hear him at 5volt, and there will be more electronics (which produce heat) in the case compared to the original one. Just to be sure :)

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/af72c480bdceebd0cde9448cdeebfb79/full.jpg
back to the reader, still recognize him? I had to remove a lot of material to be able to fit it inside. There was hardly a way to fit it with screws so i went to the dremel and took the click-n-hold part apart of the rest of his casing.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/ea270a85d83ea2798840f21f018fc02c/full.jpg
After cutting a very precisious hole (less than mm was enough to create a gap between finger print reader and the case) i was able to fit the PCB.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/1d245972fe77dda876af83b882b71b6d/full.jpg
And this is how it looks at the front. There is plenty of space left for buttons, led's, connectors etc.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/a5f86c13d1f5aa07c780dc4d3345752e/full.jpg
See :) I kept the shape exactly the same as the airhole at the rear, with those 45degree corners. (There was no other way to cut him out either hehe)

Thank all, the feedback was a good support for me to make some further progress on the monitor yesterday and today. :D

I've finished all the corners with some bondo. And sanded them down so the edges are now smooth and not sharp anymore.
It's time for a sleep, so i'm not going to upload pictures etc.

But here's a quick sketch to show you how my plan is:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/4b70a870c96c848a3dacf2bd0af7278e/full.jpg
On top you see the monitor. (duhh). IMHO it would be very empty to put only a monitor next to the operation table, so beneath the monitor there's a computer. Well, not a real one, but just a few snap-in prints. Hard to explain, wait for the photo's of the parts i mean.... I already found those parts at work. They have fancy switches and leds to blink on and off.

It's not just blinking leds, I can use the internal space as the external casing for my DVD writer and flashcard reader.

I'll remove the mounted PCB's and add a microcontroller to switch the led's on and off. I could make those strips out of aluminium myself, but this saves a lot of time, is more detailed, including text, and has a lower price.

Yeah FREESTYLE modding :)
Just joined this post, lovin it. Great work coming from your mill, never seen ANYTHING like that tiny syringe. Looking forward to more! +REP

Yet another Sunday evening update:

I spend some time on the machine beneath the monitor. Offcourse it needed a case, so i started with that:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/51afb83497b1b367a1ad942db7ff6ce0/full.jpg
Nothing special, just a box with the same width as the monitor.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/6e18bd43dc2cb8ea61a6c1bd9c0d4b20/full.jpg
So let's build a arm which can hold up the monitor (+/- 5KG).

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/abb558d420de4f5bfde44b8b8bb8a889/full.jpg
The block on the lower part will fit into a hole, so in fact the arm could even hold the monitor without any glue, because it hangs in this hole. I really need that, due to the weight of the monitor.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/fdbd2f35287b24d9667446ce1a12b977/full.jpg
See :) I added another part next to it, looks better than just 1 sheet of plastic.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/dd9b256a9ea1d0ebb558677338fbc749/full.jpg
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/ecb07e93464eff18b93cffe9ad52fbbe/full.jpg
testfit, as you see it's possible to flip the monitor.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/51e2deb6574ccb1662695186ebc5f0b3/full.jpg
Between the 2 arms i added another reinforcement to prevent the monitor from swinging from left to right.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/8a11951e447a6bc9a9a31f34a4653ed1/full.jpg
And 2 triangles on the inside so it won't hang over.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/f9259e00ec2fa87aa544aabe2a6342bd/full.jpg
Back on the front, where these fronts will be mounted. As you can see i have a gap above it. Not an accident, I was thinking about filling that with iluminated acrylic. But later i decided it would be too fancy/useless. So it will be plastic. I need that space for mounting purposes anyway.

Testing the arm.

A tube for guiding the cables from case to tft (power, video, buttons, speakers etc. hope they'll fit :P )

Base painting the parts.

While drying i started with the buttons:

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/d40ddd9e8e5d42a50665cd8492a25bec/full.jpg
Imaging the time it takes to make this...

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/670fc9a63ba0a154481be27a13273b4a/full.jpg
.... And double it, because i was not satisfied with the lower one, because it has some small misalignment.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/e7fa41341fd8d04e40da9e2a9e4db3f2/full.jpg

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/96fe06fb5d67dd0c483aa13c4dd7d46e/full.jpg
I have 8 of these 7x5 dot matrix segments. They might be cool, but i think i can better save them for a usefull function on the real computer case, because this instument has a 12" TFT anyway. Don't know what to show on it either.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/f76570225e8445315092688a744b23bf/full.jpg
Found some cool connectors with locking ring as well.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/18aa862ec21337a4af28c36883540a1c/full.jpg
Finally a picture of me while modding ;) The reason for not seeing that to often is that my camera is quite heavy and i always forget taking pictures.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/460e215664fec94eb7f687b9be2bfcef/full.jpg
The cutout, together with acrylic for the buttons and the top of it.

The plan for the buttons:
- 4 acrylic touch-sensitive buttons.
- each one with a small logo showing the function of it.
- When switched on, a led slowly fades on and illuminates the logo.

Suggestions needed:

Beneath the button there must be a small antenna, I was thinking about adding meshX panel for that, and beneath that another sheet of acryl with led's as a way of "backlite". Not shure which led colors to use, any ideas? Generally I'll use green, so what about green backlite and a red logo when switched on?

Function of the buttons:
Power to tft
Power to PC
blinking led's on machine on/off ( for when the PC is on and i want to sleep....)
...... Free function...
Shall i use commonly used icon's for that? And what to do with the last button? I could use it as a Mute function for the speakers.

Note that the operation table/pc will have his own buttons (plenty of them :D ) for led's and fan's.

For those who don't understand the button's, this is the view from top to bottom:
acryl with logo - MeshX as antenna - acrylic backlite - paint to prevent seeing trough.

You know, now i just have to hate you...

Maybe its having a kickass monitor frame, realistic looking tools made from scrap, or just the fact you can use a dremel with one hand, a camera with another and still manage to get perfect edges and a nicely focused picture.

I couldn't sleep yesterday because my mind wasthinking thinking about the buttons. But i have a new and better idea for it:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/96fe06fb5d67dd0c483aa13c4dd7d46e/full.jpg
Combining the buttons on the left with the dot-matrix on the right, with some darkened acrylic on top of it.

I'll have a 2 matrixes beyond each button, making it a 10x7 dots display, good enough to create the symbol and have some nice small animations. Like a powersymbol which rotates around his midpoint, a blink effectb when touching the button, different symbol when switched off etc.
I'll might need to use a microcontroller for each button, maybe for 2 buttons but whatever, they'd cost me €1,75. :glasses:

So true, but i do't mather about the time it takes to build this case, so that's why 'm trying to build the things myself, and touch buttons are very attractive, especially combined with a led display in them :)

Well, i managed to start building the dot matrix circuit, existing of a pic 16f628 and a 4017 IC to select the row so that the pic can send his 7 bits . The circuit is almost done, next step is to build a simpel test program, see if i can use 2 buttons on 1 microcontroller etc.

Finally someone else who uses PIC microcontrollers! Yeah, PIC's have veriable I/O pins so you can theoretically get tons of buttons on a single 8 pin PIC.

Make me proud dude. :)

yeah give us the link for the circuits :D

Circuit drawning? I don't have one :D

It's just a bounch of transistors, resistors, a micro controller, many wires and an 4017 IC.
I can draw a schematic of it, but actually it's all about the microcontroller. The schematic diagram is just a microcontroller, sending a clock puls to the 4017 IC, and 10 times 7 bits of data (the horizontal line) to the led's
For a power symbol it's something like this:

0001000
0001000
0101010
1001001
1001001
1000001
0100010
0011100
0000000
0000000

Watch the 1'es and you'll see the symbol.

I've made really nice things with microcontrollers, a 8x8x8 led cube for example. Even while i don't even know all the difficult parts with reading and writing EEPROM data etc.

08-24-2007, 04:39 PM
question....why dont you center the image?

Like this:
0000000
0001000
0001000
0101010
1001001
1001001
1000001
0100010
0011100
0000000

_ferry_
08-25-2007, 02:35 AM
Jeaah, just a quick test...
And some suggested using a shorter vertical line, so i did by now, and so it's centered as well. Still writing the code, but now it's a continuous symbol, where led's go off and on from bottom to the top. Well you'll see in the next movie. Together with the "fingerprint scan line" ;)
I'm stil not 100% shure where to use the other 3 buttons for. I think 1 for opening the optical drive, 1 for lights on/off and 1 for switching the monitor off.

On the main case there will be touch buttons as well. For selecting fan speed, and switching various lights on and off. But those will might be made with 7-digits displays (0-9) instead of dot matrixes, because i have to keep those buttons smaller.

More programming, and adding the Q-touch sensor gives this as a result:

The problem is that i don't have a circuit dawning. It's build on the datasheets.
But do you have any PIC program skills? It's not just soldering and run it. You'll need to program a PIC in order to make it work.

(the circuit is based on 6x 74HC595 shift registers, each module has 2 of them. The PIC sends 8 bits in order to switch 8 led's on and off. )

first off
BAD idea buying airbrush things @conrad, its a german electronic store, i have one around here, example
11 ultra bright LED's (yellow) 11€!!!! other webshops sell those for like ~3, so take a look on the internet before buying things there, its way to expensive
so single letters would be awsome*thinks* F.U.C.L.T.T.B.:
ferrys ultra cool thing that blinks :D :D
maybe not engraving the plate but press letters in there (like those dogtags they have in the american army)

_ferry_
09-11-2007, 04:41 PM
Jeah, but it was the cheapest airbrush i could find around. Most of them start at 100€, it's my own stupid fault, i was cleaning the airbrush and then it felt on the ground. Offcourse with the tip pointing downwards :(
I know they're expensive, but most of my electronics (microcontrollers, switches, IC's, and especially led's, are shipped from china, very cheap :D

Pressing the letters would might bend the plastic, and engraving could have similair looks when using the right mill (little round one)

Googled:
http://www.movieco.de/movie/matrix_trilogie/schild_mark.jpg
This looks nice :) That's an option as well, cutting out the letters to raise them :)

FrooP
09-12-2007, 03:02 PM
maybe you make them out of copper and solder them on a copper plate, that would give a nice weld seam on the edges n sides

_ferry_
09-12-2007, 03:49 PM
Letters must be quite small, so cutting and soldering them is not a real option.
But i'll keep that idea in mind for the main case itself, since that one will have a metal look and will be made of metal due to the weight of the hardware. Shure it 'll fit that theme. This part has more plastic look. :P

You're right, it's great I've just been waiting for an update
Me too,
But I'm damn to busy at work, each week i work +/-60 hours In the middle of dirt, cold and heat and it takes 4 hours drinving each day.
It's breaking me up :( When i arrive at home i'm watching my list of daily websites, take a shower and go to bed. Really annoying to work this way.
But december will be a modding month i guess since i told my chief i'm not going to that %&^%^%$ project back in december.

Can imagine that you don't have the energy to get started with the modding. I will be looking forward to december :) If you get even half the amount of results as tribaloverkills' month off, the amount of work done will be massive:D

Hmm, i had some time left today for modding, but i could have spend it more usefull....

The monitor was already sprayed black since a few weeks. It had a nice smooth finish because i applied 7 thin layers and after each layer i sanded it with k600.

Today i thought it would be nice to have a dark green heartbeat line across the display housing to break the black color.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/31080a6d437b04e94982ece0489278c0/full.jpg
But then, i removed the masking tape, and the black coat came off. I tried to fix it by smoothen it with sanding, but no, it ain't gonna look good this way.

If it's ^&*%-up i could test a white line with the airbrush anyway. Next to it there has a lot of coat ripped off when i removed the masking tape.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/da483c651b9c005c276c9a3d69c298b5/full.jpg
So i sanded all the coat around the 'accident zone' away with k180. Next thing to do is smoothen it with k250 and higher before i can start the painting procces again.

Conclusion:
- Primer doesn't hold on smooth, unsanded, plastic
- Paint holds up well on the sanded edges of the case
- next time: sand all the plastic

Don't think i will add the green line after i'm done with fixing this ;)

Ouch, i would have thrown it in the bin.

Ouch, that hurts!

But, one thing I learned from setbacks like this: "The result eventually only gets better!"

Have you tried the blue painters tape. I know the adhesive on the painters tape is less aggressive than regular masking tape.

No, i haven't tried it.
I'll try to order it when buying stuff at the airbrush shop.
I have some airbrush foil as well, i could have used that as well.

Well, in fact it was the paint, not the tape, since the paint held well on other projects.

Kick ;)

Case is painted now, working on the 4 touch sensitive display button's. But they work like hell :(
A single button was working fine, as i showed in a movie. But with 4 of them i'm getting too much inference, and they can hardly detect my finger.
So i'm planning some re-design on the q-touch circuit after reading the application notes. Like a separate power supply, shielding, keeping the wires away from the leds and 40x 10nF GND coupling capacitors on the common lines of the led's if necessary since led's can give some induction as well. Also some experiments with different sensor's. I might mill a hole in the acrylic to put a sensor in, instead of a sensor around the led's (which is further away from my finger)

I thought it would be easy Hehe :P Since 1 button was working fine. Well, i think it's worth the result.

Okay, here are the pics from yesterday. Haven't made a lot of progress today, since i lost some parts i needed to rebuild the touch sensors. But i ordered them. Thanks to AC Ryan i hope to receive the aluminum for the main case soon! The base 'll be anodized black, with a RVS or aluminum operation desk. Actually i'm looking for metal plates which has been circular brushed/polished:

Oh well, the case:

I polished 4 aluminum strips, to finish the edges of this case.

Test-fit.

Rear side of the case. I gave the grills a slightly weathered look. I decided to not giving it a fake-metal look, since fake metal with real metal will look bad.

Mount of the lcd to the base. When releasing the small screw i'm able to adjust the angle of the lcd panel.

Done, including a test-fit-sheet made of styrene.

Test fit. Looks cool right? (even when 3 are facing upside down ;) )

Milling the aluminum frame/shield. Lines are for reference, i milled it by calculating the length of each line including the mill diameter

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/J9Kts2VMTp1lkl0w1Ycbe5jj/full.jpg
I kept some connections to keep his strength while milling. i had to sand the edges anyway. Looks how straight, could have been lasercutted hehe. Imaging yourself trying to do it by hand, to get a straight looking front panel...

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/oAfnFFeUTDgLm8k27nX92z9m/full.jpg
And even the handcutted front panel fits fine.

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/RnU1EVsKlveePP2GYp2k09ge/full.jpg
The fit exactly in the holes i´ve made, so they won´t fall out themselves :) But it's not only a mounting frame, it should protect the q-touch sensor area against EMI/conductivity from the microcontrollers and LCD panel. Since i had some trouble with fals triggering. But i'm working on that right now.

The leds look really cool, I hope you get them to work :) I really want to see this project when you finished it, so I hope you will be on a NKCM or tBCL or something then :p

Thanks

The led's are working fine, i can show any symbol i want to. But the buttons are the problem. Well, it should be possible to get them working. I've ordered various capacitors to adjust their sensitivity. Hope to show this pc too, don't know if i'm going to finish it in 2008.
