So the girlfriend has been wanting to upgrade from her old laptop to a proper desktop PC, something that can actually play videogames worth a damn.

I pitched to her the idea of doing a casemod, and since she's really in to steampunk I tossed that idea out there. She loved it and has started doing sketches.

We've been browsing Newegg and looking at cases and stuff to use as a base, and she really likes this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811353042

She sent me a sketch today to start working with:

http://i.imgur.com/PwP11Ht.jpg

For those who don't know what Walter Robotics or Cavalcadium are, they're things that have to do with this band that she's really in to called Steam Powered Giraffe, which are like a folk/rock kinda band from San Diego, whose whole act is very steampunk-styled.

I then took that sketch as guidance and made a very poor photoshop of it:

http://i.imgur.com/FWRb0w4.png

Since it's going to be her computer, she's going to be taking the lead on all the design decisions, but I have been tossing out ideas. I suggested doing up the exterior in a pretty traditional steampunk style (wood, copper, gears, that stuff) but do the interior in a much more futuristic approach with visible components, UV reactive cabling and lighting effects, etc... she seemed to really like that idea. I've got a few more kicking around for fan vents, other little details and stuff like that, we'll see how she feels about those ideas and what of those end up getting implemented.

Still, I found a way to get my girlfriend more in to computers and case modding! Plus she's already pretty crafty as-is, so the two of us working together should make something pretty neato.

Stay tuned.

Talked to her about making an "exhaust port" styled fan exhaust for the top or back of the computer (both? why not!) and she seemed to like the idea. So I figured what the hell, let's make a proof of concept!

http://i.imgur.com/4tvhOSUl.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/OYulPyQl.jpg

last pic is because we're talking about doing lots of blue lighting, and I wanted to show how it could shine through the exhaust port.

Materials, you ask?

4" 90* PCV ag-pipe bend
4" PVC ag-pipe drain grille
some copper and black spraypaints I had laying around.

This is just a rough concept so the paintjob isn't that great, literally spent maybe 10-15 minutes making this. It'll probably be revised but I'm still pleased with it. $5 in materials, plus the cost of paint and voila.

bingo bango bongo, the case came in today

Using a DIYPC Mirage as the base.

The case feels a little flimsy and extremely light, but perhaps that's just due to my experience with my case, the Fractal Design Define XL R2, which is packed with sound deadening and weighs something stupid like 40lbs.

http://i.imgur.com/mEnb2hRl.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/EUhag1Gl.jpg

Decided to set the exhaust vent on top for ****s and giggles. It may need some downsizing. Or maybe not. I think it's comically large for that particular case, but it's not my computer now is it?
http://i.imgur.com/hp2APsUl.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/C3oqTN0l.jpg

And speaking of my computer, here's a terrible picture comparing the size of my aforementioned Fractal case to the DIYPC mid-tower:

So we managed to get a little work done today, not a whole ton because a lot of it requires tools that I simply don't have at the moment, but we'll figure that out. Still, progress is progress.

So let's start off with a pic of the girlfriend, this is probably the single worst picture I've taken of her and she'll probably give me a rash of **** once she finds out it's online but here we go:

http://i.imgur.com/tz2HYmXl.jpg

Okay, on to the garage. A box of supplies from home depot:
http://i.imgur.com/sMcrKrel.jpg

In there we have that copper spraypaint, the silver she wants to do on the inside, some PET tubing that she wants to use on the interior, two 3" drain grates for turning in to exhausts, some wood stain and a brush. We also got a little sheet of wood.

http://i.imgur.com/Qd6WdUKl.jpg
She started by laying the side panel down on some cardboard and tracing it out.

http://i.imgur.com/UO8fVDyl.jpg
Then after doing some measurements, marking and cutting out what would be the raised section of the panel.

http://i.imgur.com/AcLLXr9l.jpg
Once she got the template for the raised section out, we laid it on the wood panel so we could trace it out.

http://i.imgur.com/mxPeHnRl.jpg
And tracing.

http://i.imgur.com/PcdyS9Rl.jpg
Not a great picture but there it is.

She wants to cut the center out of that and use the wood as a border for the raised sections of the side panels on both sides. I realized that in order to do that, I pretty much need a scroll saw, which I don't have. But the idea is to cut it out, bolt it to the side panel and work from there.

Stay tuned, I may do some fiddling while she's away...

Another Sunday, another update.

Did some more planning and stuff today, but let's focus on the actual progress.

http://i.imgur.com/nSDrzSO.jpg
first, we painted the entire case silver. went through an entire can of Rustoleum but the entire thing is covered, sans a few little areas up underneath or behind areas that you'll never see anyway. And yes, it's upside-down in this picture.

http://i.imgur.com/bGTrycI.jpg
Next were the side panels, Rustoleum "Sienna Mist". It's a wonderful copper color. Here the girlfriend is spraying the first panel down. She later handed the can off to me to let me finish up both the side panels.

http://i.imgur.com/vaBT6PO.jpg
First panel. The color on the case itself is a little dulled because we did spray directly on to the black case paint itself, but she really liked how it looked in the sun and I'm actually pretty pleased too.

http://i.imgur.com/ge0EqJH.jpg
Second side panel.

http://i.imgur.com/WGHovJ2.jpg
Back to the lab. Here she is getting ready to file out some stuff from the front panel that she wanted gone.

http://i.imgur.com/ajmwYnz.jpg
Filing away.

http://i.imgur.com/I5fqwzw.jpg
She came up with another idea... what you working on there, shelly?

http://i.imgur.com/q3MFVv9.jpg
Oh, a cover of some sort...

http://i.imgur.com/wwBW6EL.jpg
Cardboard prototyping for what will hopefully become wooden drive bay covers. This also covers the area that normally houses the USB and headphone ports, which will later be relocated.

http://i.imgur.com/VDsa02h.jpg
So we cut out one of the bits of wood for the drive covers and here she is filing a chamfer on to the edge of it.

http://i.imgur.com/UBZLkY6.jpg
After giving it a good sanding, the stain comes out.

http://i.imgur.com/UyXZfV1.jpg
Five minutes of soak time, wipe it off and we end up with a nice rich, dark brown color.

http://i.imgur.com/hZX7Xma.jpg
Happy with all the progress we made today!

We also did some stuff to her car, plasti-dipped some of the interior trim panels in Blaze Purple with purple metallic flake, which she's really excited about.

Stay tuned.

Another Sunday, another update!

Today we busted out the jigsaw, the power drill, more stain, picked up some polyurethane clear coat and more spray paint, and got a ton of work done!

Let's review the day's progress:

http://i.imgur.com/WyfSqRql.jpg
Last night, I went ahead and cut the top wood panel to size, and laid out the bolt holes.

http://i.imgur.com/ij6uKU1l.jpg
Today, we started out by bringing out the jigsaw and cutting out the second side panel, to size.

http://i.imgur.com/czEFOVHl.jpg
Away we go! This was, admittedly, my first time actually using a jigsaw.

http://i.imgur.com/EJk38Z2l.jpg
The girlfriend got a number of pictures of me using it.

http://i.imgur.com/dDmMt6nl.jpg
After it was cut to size, I measured the distances from the front/back/top/bottom of the side panel to the raised section and began laying it out.

http://i.imgur.com/HthoXmMl.jpg
The girlfriend lining the edges of the two pieces together to make sure they're the same size. They were, within less than 1/16th of an inch. I was pretty pleased with that.

http://i.imgur.com/TZLd92fl.jpg
So I grabbed a spade bit, clamped the two pieces down to some scrap wood, and got to it.

http://i.imgur.com/0F5iGCHl.jpg
Coming around the bend, trying to get the jigsaw straight for the edge. I admittedly did not to so great, and even botched the layout. It was... not great. But we improvised, made another quick cut or two and decided to shelve the side panels for now, to be revisited later.

http://i.imgur.com/dVgVUftl.jpg
Took a quick moment to lay down some metallic silver on the front, and formerly yellow mesh.

http://i.imgur.com/qR791WBl.jpg
Blam, all silver.

http://i.imgur.com/9PZw9Rkl.jpg
Then we laid the top wood panel on top of the PC and drilled the hell out of it. Cheap, thin metal case = warping around the drill holes. but thankfully aside from two locations, everything fit properly and we didn't drill in to anything else. Not bad for what was, essentially, guesswork.

http://i.imgur.com/r0Wqmjdl.jpg
After making sure the bolts we had would fit the holes, I busted out the orbital sander and smoothed the top panel out.

http://i.imgur.com/rzmx5xZl.jpg
Not using a clamp was probably stupid, the board was vibrating all over our makeshift table and my arms are still kinda wobbly.

http://i.imgur.com/kkDelual.jpg
After sanding, I bought the piece back inside for stain.

http://i.imgur.com/IrMZ0VNl.jpg
This stuff goes on *dark*.

http://i.imgur.com/XMHvps3.jpg
But comes out looking pretty good. My camera and this angle do not do it justice.

http://i.imgur.com/9c27Vcwl.jpg
We also decided to inverse the color scheme for the bolts. Instead of copper bolts and silver star washers, we decided to do silver bolts and copper star washers.

http://i.imgur.com/oZ088ZZl.jpg
and a quasi-artsy picture taken from the edge of my workbench as everything dried.

Things not taken pictures of:

Got the second front panel blockoff plate thing cut out and stained.
Got two coats of polyurethane clear-coat on the first piece of wood from last week.
Got one coat of polyurethane clear-coat on the top panel.
There's no picture of the top panel sitting on top of the case with the bolts going through. But there will be a bit later this week, maybe tomorrow or Tuesday once the polyurethane cures and I can set it on top.

Stay tuned. As always, more to come...

Nice progress so far!

I remember the first time I used that stain, I thought for sure I had ruined the piece I was working on because it was so dark. It does give a great colour to the wood once it dries, just scary at first.

Thanks man!

Yeah, in addition to that stain being so dark, neither one of us has ever stained anything before. So there's that, too. But everything is coming out fantastic and I'm super pleased, I'm sure she is too. Especially after getting the polyurethane on the wood, really livens it up. I'm excited to see it when we finally get everything 100% together and start stuffing components in to it.

Monday mini-update time.

Let's start with something unusual... I haven't seen 80mm fans in what feels like forever, never mind used them.

http://i.imgur.com/ma6ZDJql.jpg
So let's start with this, a Logisys 80mm blue LED fan. Reminds me of the days of 2004, 2005, when "case modding" meant stuffing some blue LED fans in to your mom's HP and poorly cutting out a side window.

http://i.imgur.com/6vxBnoXl.jpg
Luckily our application will be a little more... advanced than that. Here is the 3" agricultural drain grate thing that will be turned in to an exhaust port. It fits perfectly.

http://i.imgur.com/CH8Vk4Dl.jpg
Checking that there's enough room to fit two of the fans on the top panel...

http://i.imgur.com/UM5ajXNl.jpg
The fans fit inside! This test motherboard has the CPU pretty close to the top left and clearance isn't even an issue here, which is nice.

http://i.imgur.com/1HDtPT7l.jpg
Case holds a full ATX board nicely, using my old test motherboard. I think a full-ATX will be used for the build, to make the case seem more full.

http://i.imgur.com/VfsmnzPl.jpg
Unlit at the moment, but the silver interior will likely help reflect a lot of light and make the inside really bright, which is what we're going for.

http://i.imgur.com/pRZZp9Ql.jpg
Back on top, I set the once-clear-coated top wood panel down with the bolts and star washers.

http://i.imgur.com/tJH3sL6l.jpg
It's an unconvential use of these particular washers but with them painted copper, I feel like it gives it a nice little accent and makes it more visually appealing versus just having plain bolts.

Still left to be done, so we're on track:

Body filler work, relocation of ports and other plastic/bondo work on front panel.
create (likely aluminium) bezel for power/reset switches, to be located on front panel still, but elsewhere.
Paint front panel copper to match the rest of the case
top vents
paint top of case copper so the edges match as well
begin doing "walter robotics" and calvacadium logos, likely out of styrene
drill holes for, sand, stain and clear coat side panel wood accents.
develop the "still currently secret" side panel ****-up fix (possible trip to the hobby shop is in order... shhh)

plus whatever other plans and whims there is left floating around in her head, or suggestions we hear online that she likes.

then it's just a matter of the easy bit, AKA building the actual computer itself. Hardware still required: all of it.

Well life got a little bit in the way, but we're back.

Girlfriend got strep throat and stayed home two weeks back, last weekend we decided to just be lazy and do nothing, but this weekend we got a little more work done.

Not a huge update and not a lot of pictures.

We got the side panel wood bits filed to fit, so they would sit nice and flush against the side of the case. Then took them outside and put some holes in 'em:

http://i.imgur.com/FRQh6Wj.jpg
left side, holes drilled and bolts in it.

http://i.imgur.com/tuoQTR6.jpg
right side, holes drilled and bolts in it.

http://i.imgur.com/se1NjCJ.jpg
Laying down stain.

The girlfriend also put the second coat of polyurethane on the top panel, which I realized may not have been a great idea in case the holesaw damages it at all buuuuut, well, it's done so we'll see how it goes.

Some point during the week I am going to hit the hardware store and pick up the holesaw for the top, then I can get the fans situated, as well as more bolts (we miscalculated, I think), nuts, and more star washers.

As we're nearing the end of the work on the case itself, it's time to start looking at working on the front panel, as well as some of the more artistic details. Stay tuned, there's more to come.

Thanks man! It's nice to be working on a mod, and one as involved as this. Plus it's nice to have something to do with the girlfriend that's fairly inexpensive all told, I'm out maybe $30 so far and she's out around $60, most of which was up front for materials and it's just been work so far.

Progress has been a little slow but it's mostly just smaller stuff now, with the exception of the front panel, all that's really left is finishing little details.

We did a little work yesterday, I only got one picture though.

Drilled out the holes in the top of the case for the fans:
http://i.imgur.com/LN9DUdz.jpg

two things: One: I am really happy that the wood didn't blow out when it was drilled. Two: wood holesaw + metal case = nope.

I'm gonna have to go back and clean up the holes on the case, probably with my dremel.

We also go the 80mm fans at least roughly mounted. Holes for the screws are under the wood panel so you don't see them. Today I may be able to get the exhaust vents cut to the right angle and ready for paint. I also may go to the hardware store and pick up more bolts, depending on how my back feels.

Okay so it's been a little bit since an update. Especially with the cold weather coming up we've not been getting a whole hell of a lot done on the case, but a few little things here and there. I'll try to recap as best as possible.

I apologize in advance as most of these pictures are crap. Hopefully when I get my new phone they will be much improved!

http://i.imgur.com/w9b1wFm.jpg

Remember how I said I ****ed up the cut, and the wood was supposed to be right up against the bevel? This was my girlfriend's solution -- glue gears in the space there to make it seem like an intentional effect. I think it looks good, and she did both sides.

http://i.imgur.com/GzP6HRd.jpg

And to that tune, I came up with this idea: use the leftover gears to embellish the front of the case as well.

http://i.imgur.com/XhlJ0xV.jpg

After my last post, I plugged in the 80mm fans and this is how bright it was with the silver interior. Those two 80mm fans alone are probably sufficient, but once there's more components in there, we'll see. This sucker is gonna be BRIGHT.

http://i.imgur.com/ELwAM3A.jpg
Out of focus picture showing the two 80s.

http://i.imgur.com/PySh6mS.jpg
bright bright

http://i.imgur.com/x5Xj4N5.jpg
Desired effect for the vent: blue glow.

Then today I did/am doing a little work too.

http://i.imgur.com/WBd341x.jpg
Start off by painting a few more washers

then cut down the bolts so you can mount the side panel. I got a picture of me cutting a bolt but it's a bad picture and not that interesting.

http://i.imgur.com/c2xh3Gr.jpg
So here she is, side panels mounted.

http://i.imgur.com/nYlhpea.jpg
Other side too, but waiting on three more bolts.

With any luck today those washers will dry plenty so I can go and cut the rest of the bolts to length, plus I need to cut one of the 80mm fans because it interferes with the motherboard. Once that's done, we're done with the case and side panels (for now) and it's on to the front panel, with more bondo, metalwork and wiring to be done!

Stay tuned, and thanks for reading!

TLHarrell

I'd have actually stuck the gears inside that front panel, let them be seen when it lights up behind. Love the solution for the incorrect cut though. Genius level there.

Omega
11-30-2014, 09:41 PM
There's already another mesh under there and the gears are fairly small that the details would be lost that way.

Got the gears glued to the outside of the mesh today, and bondo'd over the power button. We're getting some stuff done this weekend, there'll be an update likely tomorrow.

Omega,

Looking good!

In the future if you want to hole saw metal (steel, aluminum, etc) look for bi-metal hole saws. You don't have to pay top dollar (Harbor Freight is your friend here) Once your through the wood and the metal is marked. Remove the wood and apply lube liberally as you finish drilling the hole in the sheet metal. Look up Boelube sticks. It's a wax based biodegradable lube. it's pretty inexpensive and works great. I use it on drills, taps, saws...pretty much anything that cuts metal.

The "Holy **** it's been an entire two months since an update" thread.

Obviously the holiday season is hectic, combined with cold/windy/rainy weather means our motivation to do things was basically zero.

One of the few nice days we had together was spent cleaning and fixing a few minor things on our cars.

But anywho, this weekend we made some progress.

http://i.imgur.com/svaIjnu.jpg
Started by spraying areas of the front panel black to hide the pink bondo.

http://i.imgur.com/QQCqAI7.jpg
then the girlfriend laid down the copper.

http://i.imgur.com/hapgzpf.jpg
We didn't let the block undercoat cure long enough. The good news is the only bit that will be visible is the little bit between the drive bays and the lower mesh.

http://i.imgur.com/gaLbk9f.jpg
Getting good coverage.

http://i.imgur.com/f4i5tTw.jpg
Mounted to the case, it looks infinitely more cohesive now.

http://i.imgur.com/fmjyEOf.jpg
The mesh helps break up the big swathe of copper and with some more accent pieces should look nice.

http://i.imgur.com/cZ7sSSX.jpg
Sadly my filler job wasn't the best, but it's not super bad either. Oh well.

http://i.imgur.com/oYryMFO.jpg
The next step though.... distressing.

We're going to take the wood panels off, attack the visible areas with random stabbings of sandpapers and rocks, and then dust on flat black and flat brown spray paint to give it an aged, dirty, damaged look.

We also ordered the EL wire and have been discussing what to do about the side window and other details.

Stay tuned, more *is* on the way!

Through the side panel? We may or may not do something there. Haven't decided yet. The aging process might carry over to the interior as well.

We're planning on doing a frosting/etching of a circuitboard pattern on the window so interior details aren't going to be immediately apparent. Also since the hardware we're going to use probably won't be terribly impressive and there's not a whole hell of a lot of room for cable management.

So the interior may be deliberately "messy", we'll see when we get there. Or I may have to go completely dumb and get some copper piping...

We got some sheetmetal too, to do accents on the front panel. Thin stainless.

Update!

The build is nearing completion. Shelly got her tax return so we went ahead and ordered up the parts. I think I'll keep that a surprise for now.

Pictures!

So for the side panel, she wanted to do a circuitboard pattern. So we started by tracing the window and drawing the pattern she wanted.

http://i.imgur.com/d1Y9eMQ.jpg

I then popped that in to photoshop and traced it, then popped it in to illustrator and made it a vector. Took the image, mirrored it, and had it cut to vinyl at a local sign shop. Took it home, applied the vinyl to the window, and hit it with my soda blaster. There are sadly no pictures of this, that portion of the day was so productive that I forgot...

http://i.imgur.com/VtAqUWP.jpg
Here shelly is, peeling off the vinyl after I did the soda blasting.

http://i.imgur.com/aiBl69d.jpg
The completed window.

http://i.imgur.com/R1223Ux.jpg
We then took the case outside, and she started attacking it with the lava rocks from my front yard, as well as a can of flat black and flat brown spray paint to "age" it.

http://i.imgur.com/RpPfIJX.jpg
This picture really doesn't do it justice. This was taken in my garage with no care for the lighting and taken with my cellphone. But you can see that it certainly has a lot more "character" now.

http://i.imgur.com/JZ6nmqx.jpg
Picture with flash of the "aged" panel.

http://i.imgur.com/0NzMc2o.jpg
And a day or two after, I got these cut and sanded to size. Now they just need to be painted to match the rest of the case, and (probably) glued in to place.

Left to do:
1. Tighten down all the bolts on the top panel.
2. Drill hole, mount and wire power button. Re-install front USB/reset/headphone jacks.
3. Make front panel drive bay opening acrylic piece, figure out what to do with space. It's still up in the air, since we've veered "off-plan".
4. buy 3x 120mm blue LED fans
5. install all the components and make sure it works!

I'm getting a new camera next week as well so I should have much nicer pictures of it as well!

Thank you!

We got it all the components in the case this last weekend but I haven't had the time to go through my pictures. Still, it's in one piece almost!

The front panel needs finishing and then that's it! Plus I got a nice new camera so expect lots of good pictures to come.

It's DONE!

Today, with the exception of two stickers, we finished!

Last week we got the computer together. Specs:

MSI Motherboard (I forget the model offhand)
Intel Core i5-4430k
Sapphire Radeon R9 270X
8GB of G.Skill Ripjaws RAM
1TB Seagate HDD
EVGA 600w PSU

almost everything was "done" last week, just the front panel needed finishing. So we did that and ran the EL wire today.

So here's how the day started, with the front panel ready to get molested.
http://i.imgur.com/XywfxuA.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/s1HHnKZ.jpg
We got a little sheetmetal plate to mount the power button and the light switch to.

http://i.imgur.com/IZFJgrH.jpg
Drill some holes in it...

http://i.imgur.com/H2ymDrm.jpg
A big one for the power button

http://i.imgur.com/1ifFOt8.jpg
and a smaller one for the duckbill switch. I didn't account for the stuff cast in to the plastic behind and the drill bit walked. This was a non-issue, I fixed it later.

http://i.imgur.com/CadQwMq.jpg
Both switches mounted, getting the screws in place...

http://i.imgur.com/lMIcZIx.jpg
Yep.

http://i.imgur.com/7Nb68Ot.jpg
Power button/lightswitch plate mounted.

http://i.imgur.com/P49FCw4.jpg
Began installing the EL wire. Most of the wiring in the case is a rat's nest but I tried to keep as much of it as possible out of the upper corner to allow for airflow.

The EL wire got mostly ziptied in place.

I didn't get any more pictures after that. It was pretty much done anyway. She also painted the top vents and glued them in place. So without futher ado, here it is:

Bam.

We also put a piece of clear plexiglass in the drive openings. She wanted it clear and wanted to be able to see in to the case through the front, so that's what we did.

EL wire and front panel ribbon cables make up the view mostly. This is intentional -- it's meant to look old, ratty, and used, but still kind of high tech.

I will get more photos tomorrow, I have a white backdrop that we are going to use. It's getting a pair of stickers and then it's off to the girlfriend's house to get set up in it's new home!

Final photos! Put in an Imgur album so I don't have to downsize them a bunch.
