I have an Antec Super Lanboy and I'd like to spraypaint it black. Do I absolutely have to sand down the aluminum or can I just clean it up and do the usual primer then color? Because my buddy told me it wasn't necessary to sand it down unless I wanted it to be super smooth.

you just have to clean it, but if you want it smooth you would be better of using bondo or filer(thys you can sand, the aluminium would take days) to cover the litle deep spots in the finish

Some paints have trouble sticking to the Anodised surface of the aluminium. You might need to sand it quite a bit to get a good painting surface.
