1. Im looking around and the new AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (Singler core) AMD 2 is only $114.00 US And X2 is only $154.00 US. Are they any good or are they stupidly cheap crappy peices of silcion.

2. And how would it comapre to the old AMD 3400+ running on the 754.

3. Is it worth the upgrade to AMD2 or is upgrading to 939 a socket baord and processor fine enough. AS the 3800+ single core 939 is $115.00 more.

(Prices from newegg.com)

Edit:

The x2 in converted to Aussie dollars from newegg is like $200 AUD while the local stores near me want like another $100 AUD for them anyone know any good, safe, relaiable stores that ship internationally.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of RAM if you upgrade to the AM2 motherboard.

Why do I need different RAM now not the old 3200.

the socket 939 cpu's use the ram you're used to... good old DDR. the AM2 cpu's use DDR2 ram. you most definitely cant swap between the two types (DDR is 184 pin and DDR2 is 240 pin).

so if you go with the AM2.... you need brand new memory. good news is DDR2 prices are going down, and performance is creeping higher and higher.

Damm didn't know that thanks. I guess socket 939 is the pest option with out having to buy DDR2 ram.

I don't know if this will help in your decision. You might have even looked at it already. But here is a thread about AM2 vs. 939.

My recommendation is get a really good mobo and then chose your cpu. You can upgrade substantially with the 939. Don't get a middle ground cpu, save your pennies or get the best. That way if you decide to upgrade from a slower one, it won't be a waste of money.

That was my plan. I' am aiming for a 4600+ X2 939. On one of those high end ASUS boards with dual PCI-E 16x slots. Like the A8N32-SLI Deluxe.

i have the amd athlon 3800+ running at 2.4 ghz in the 939 version. It runs awsome. It is cool, quite and powerful. I would think that the amd 2 would run a lil better but prob not worth it because you would have to upgrade ram and get a mobo.
