As previously stated this Mod is for my In Laws. Since CLOWNED is complete and a present for my mom, I thought my In laws should get a mod too, to replace their 500MHz Gateway. They or my wife have no knowledge of this project. Thus far I only have the following components:
(1) 80GB Seagate HD
(1) AMD Opteron 165 (1.8GHz) Dual Core
(1) Green Aspire X-Discovery Case
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/6370/xdiscoveryes5.jpg
I will act as though the top of the case is the hood. Since I have limited ability in making a good looking scoop, I will be mounting an engine in the top of the case. The engine is the Dodge 426 Hemi. I want to tie in a 20mm fan that once cooled the Northbridge chipset to the crank. I'm hoping it will spin the engine fan without makiung it fall apart, but I won't know till I try.
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/3924/hemienginexa2.jpg
Here's some concept pics of what I'm looking to do. I used Google Sketchup and then did a print screen to save them as .jpg's. The concept pics aren't final. I still need to add the stripes to the concept pics.
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1899/sketch1ra9.jpg
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/299/sketch2ll4.jpg
And so it begins again. Join me on another adventure.

Here's pics of the components. I said earlier that I had a Seagate 80GB, but was mistaken; it's a Maxtor 80GB Diamondmax 16.

Here's the modem.
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4750/modemkt6.jpg
And the Opteron
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/9749/opteronxz3.jpg
Today I got the bee decal
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/8229/decaldw3.jpg
And the SuperBee emblem

No offence, but why dial-up?
Anyway, great idea, the mental picture it gives off makes me anticipate it's finish.

It's actually just in case. My in laws won't be accessing the internet at all. DSL/Cable is not available in thier area and they only have a cell phone. But if they were ever to get a phone line, it'll be there.

I got the case in the mail and as you can see it's not nearly as bright of a green as the website showed. But that's great, because it's even closer to the color of the car!

Also, I tested the engine spinning idea with the use of an 80mm fan and it just doesn't have the torque to spin it. There's more ways ahead.
Here's some updated concept pics.

I took the windowed panel off and disassembled the fan and grill. As you can see they added this nice little piece of mesh too. I won't be reusing the grill, but I do like the mesh.
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/8828/3piecevm3.jpg
Another nice feature is the removable mobo tray.
http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/1633/trayxc8.jpg
The right panel has an awfully convenient place for the "HEMI" window.
http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/6318/rightprepjw7.jpg
And as you can see I've already begun the painting.
http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/6990/flat1tb5.jpg
http://img486.imageshack.us/img486/2721/flat2fv1.jpg
Here's the paint I'm using. A nice flat black.
http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/8392/flat3dj6.jpg
I also cut a small angle to show the bend of the stripe.

I've been meaning to mention for a long time how nice it is to have this mini spotlight.
http://img425.imageshack.us/img425/8387/lightfq6.jpg
I marked off the width for the right stripe. It has to be identical to the left.
http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/9526/rightstripe1py3.jpg
Then I roughed up the paint....
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/7272/rightstripe2qv3.jpg
...and slapped it on.
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/8026/rightstripe3tt4.jpg

The motherboard I got is the DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D is mine. I still have to get the Video Card, Memory, Heatsink, DVD drive and the front panel LCD.
Here's the right side cut.
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/2646/rightcutbe6.jpg
I got the logo. It's 6 inches in diameter, the case is 8 inches. The logo here is yellow, but it doesn't matter I just need the black parts. I'll cut away all the yellow and slap it on, then clear coat over it.

I popped out the drive bay covers and removed the front glass.
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/6706/bezel1wc2.jpg
Then taped off the front panel
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/4237/bezel2zf6.jpg
I painted the bay covers separately
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/764/bezel3nb4.jpg
Then painted the vents. After it dried I made sure that none of the vents was clogged.
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/6029/bezel4xm8.jpg
Then removed the paint tape

it's brilliant!
and it goes A+ with a car-mod :)
oh.. i forgot to look at the price :( if i had the bucks (and the posibility to buy it online) i would take it! it would probably be very hard to make this by yourself, if possible.. and maybe the materials wouldnt be 100 bucks, but the machines and experience would be :(
oh, this mod is awsome! nice plan and nice case :)

You're right, that green is REALLY close to the original car color. I think this is going to be a terriffic mod, and look forward to the end result. :)

They have those plugs at Walmart and stuff that turn it into a light.
simon275
08-10-2006, 08:48 PM
Even though it is cool I would't put one in as you might get a few spills on the case from having coffee in such close promixity to it. And the coffee gets sticky and is a pain to remove. So I don't think it would be safe to put one in unless the person was really carefull but we all have our moments. BTW nice logo.
TheGreatSatan
08-10-2006, 09:00 PM
Duh, I just remembered. The case has a piece of glass over the front, so you'd have to open the glass door then use the cup holder. I think it would look stupid.
Also,
This is my concept for the top with the scoop. I haven't settled on what will be IN the scoop, but it would probably be illuminated exhaust fans and a different type of mesh than what comes with the Hood scoop.
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/1117/topscoopks6.jpg
I fixed the edge of the stripe.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1084/stripefixpz6.jpg

I worked on the custom Mopar grill and yes, I know it's not perfect, but it is a start.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4185/intake01br2.jpg
Here's kind of what I'm looking for.
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4303/intake02vj1.jpg
Except I want mesh. Not thin modder's mesh, but something thicker. So I took it from this old case.
http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/7972/intake03xf2.jpg
Here's what it looks like joined to the grill framing
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/6950/intake04mb4.jpg
And then again with the "M"
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/93/intake05ga2.jpg
All the excess along the sides had to go....So I started cutting
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4656/intake06qt4.jpg
Till I finished
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/5772/intake07ny4.jpg
And replaced the "M"
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/1189/intake08ea2.jpg
Here's kind of what to expect with the case fan attached.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/2628/intake09xf4.jpg
http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/5518/intake10mz6.jpg
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/2064/intake11dm3.jpg
One last thing. Should I leave the "M" Silver or paint it? Maybe to match the case (at least as close as possible)?
tybrenis
08-15-2006, 09:11 PM
I think you should paint it, cause right now, it almost blends into the mesh. I thin it'll contrast well if you paint just the "M".
TheGreatSatan
08-15-2006, 09:53 PM
The majority thus far says Black paint.
tybrenis
08-15-2006, 10:04 PM
I would have to agree with that - at least if you mean painting the "M" black. I'm sure it'll look fine with the entire thing painted or just the "M" painted, but I like the idea of the "M" contrasting colors and standing out. Maybe if you painted the mesh silver and the "M" black or something similar.
Mesh should be black with the M being green. It would match the case's paint style more than leaving the mesh unpainted.
TheGreatSatan
08-15-2006, 11:08 PM
There's a thought. I need to see if I can get a close match to the case color.for the mesh. Here's a look of the black M.

Its probably too late but I would vote for flat black mesh and a metallic blue "M" like the original logo is. Eitherway.. it will look cool! :D
EDIT: Damn I forgot to hit submit before I went to get the pizza.. I came back, hit submit, and pow, there were already pictures of the finished product above my post.. Go figure:redface:
Any who.. Looking good.. I was looking at the mesh window on the motherboard side, and thinking some of the black pinstripping around that would look pretty good. Keep up the great work.
nice work, the pinstripes will make it go faster too. :P :)
curiously, what do you think of the cooler master musketeer you posted on the last page, I was thinking of getting one myself (from what I can tell the look nice but are essentially useless - do you think its worth the money?)

OvRiDe

Wow... That scoop is definatly going to look great, and even better with the top paint job. Im not really feeling the side vents, they just seem off in some way. Of course that is just my opinion. Looks like your on the home stretch with this one.. Are you going to do a keyboard and mouse with this one as well?

Then applied it to the window.

The hole saw was actually too dull and I had to finish with the dremel.
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/3024/exhaust2zi8.jpg

Probably blows out because it is at the top of the case.
Oh yea TGS. That's looking good.

Yeah it will be an exhaust. Heat rises, so it seem stupid to fight that.

Yeah, I like the keyboard, but the mouse is pretty crappy. It's a horrible Apple-type knock off.
I went to the hobby store and spent .99 cents on some lettering.
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/4434/hemi1qy0.jpg
Which added some detail to the hood scoops.
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/6927/hemi2py1.jpg
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/5981/hemi3tn3.jpg
Next came the window grill. First some primer...

Then the green on the mesh.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/1852/grill2by5.jpg
And I made the grill frame black.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/5038/grill3jo4.jpg
Then I bonded the Mopar "M" to the mesh
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/2166/grill4hh1.jpg
And lastly I put it all together.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/4494/grill5zf1.jpg

I was wondering if I should use this old HD cooler bay front piece in place of one of the bays to "look" like a car grill? Or would it be overkill?
http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/4944/bayventzw1.jpg
Also, since I lost money on the motherboard in a bad ebay transaction and since my In-Laws will be visiting in 2 weeks, I added a multifunctional floppy/media reader drive. I was going to add a Matrix Orbital LCDC, but do not have the money.
http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/3497/floppyry1.jpg
Personally, I would leave the grill out.
That's too bad about ebay. I bet that would have been sweet.

So I was looking at maybe putting the engine inside, but I think it's way too big. It sure won't fit between the drive cage rails and it would probably prevent a video card from staying in the slot.

Yeah - well, this motherboard is called the "LAN Party", I have the same one. The case has a window and is displaying the motherboard, since it's parts glow under UV light. Also this mobo is meant for LAN parties, so the mountain dew seems fitting.
And he's putting that cap over the heatsink, I beleieve.

Here's another pic of the motherboard with all the cards, thus far.
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/6/allcardsng7.jpg
I put the glass back on the front too.
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/4039/glassedxl3.jpg
I also have been doing a bit of Soldering to take out the switches these cathodes come with. I don't want a bunch of switches on the back panel. When you power up the lights come on and then they turn off when you power down.
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/2554/soldergy5.jpg
For the loose lighting cables...
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/3557/glued1ly1.jpg

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/3524/glued4se3.jpg
Lastly, I'm thinking of adding a UV cathode above the motherboard. There will be a few UV cathodes inside to really show off the UV sensitive Mobo.

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5235/whatif4qh6ld8.jpg
Can you think of something I can put there to cover it up that'll look cool? I thought about making a dealer window sticker for the 1971 Dodge Charger SuperBee and put that there. What do you think?
jestyyr
08-26-2006, 09:10 AM
you could go with a partial cage, for the cage...
like something that goes from the front inside of the case and wraps around just far enough to hide the cage, perhaps even detailing it to look like some sort of car inside thing :P
Dealer window sticker wouldn't look right. It would be cool, but I don't think it would flow at all with teh rest of the case.
You could just spell out "Mopar" in vynl and have it go down. You could still see the cage, but it wouldn't be as ugly.
You could make a small panel out of sheet metal or something and wrap it in interior vynil. Making it look like part of the interior of the car.
Also, find a good pic of the car from the side and see if anything catches your eye, then use it.

I like the vinyl idea, but make it look like the upholstry or floor mats, or the same green color and add the coil, battery and wiring to make it look like the engine compartment.

..the 4th pin is for PWM, if supported.. usually, these connections cross-fit.. but that cap looks to close.. mechanically, u can't put.. modd-wise... u can ;)
What's this 4 pin power for?
should be said in the manual..
This cable comes from the floppy/media reader, but I don't know where to plug it in. The 4 pin jumper above doesn't say if it has data + or data -.
that's a usb cable.. u should plug it in one of the free headers on the mobo.. usually, they have the + marked on the mobo and the others align by themselves :)

I bought a 10 inch UV cathode from AutoZone. These are brighter than ones made for PC's.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/1720/10inchuv1pi0.jpg
I got out a spare molex
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/1430/10inchuv2zj7.jpg
Then I cut off the end and separated the 12V from the ground.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/390/10inchuv3as3.jpg
I did the same with the molex
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/7741/10inchuv4jf4.jpg
Then soldered them together.

http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/2626/10inchuv7sc2.jpg
Next comes the engine/processor mod. I bought an 80mm blow hole funnel and a 120mm to 92mm fan adapter.

Then screwed it back to the heatsink.
