Hello tbcs friends,

I will be upgrading my computer this summer, as my b-day is coming up in < 3 weeks :D, and I have a few questions.

What works the best for you? AMD or Intel, Corsair or Kingston (and others of course), ddr1 or ddr2, ATI or nVidia?

I need hints on a good motherboard MAINLY... I'm thinking ASUS, SLI, DDR2, and maybe AMD. I haven't tried AMD yet, but it looks better for the money. Meh, I've been building computers for 5 years, but I'm not as knowledgable as the pros here.

So basically, if any of you could buy any mobo what would it be, choose one for AMD if you like AMD's and choose one more Intel if you like Intel!

Thanks guys!

I am liking Intel right now because of Conroe. Those low end Conroe CPUs have a lot of overclocking potential. As for an Intel motherboard, I would at least wait for the 590 SLI chipsets.

Can't go wrong with either Corsair, OCZ, or Mushkin.

i could go conroe or AM2, as AMD have quad core round the corner, an am2 mobo would be an advantage, but conroe as been stated as the best of the best.

im an AMD fanboy though :P

with mobos i will always, always have an asus, theyre are brilliant boards and the latest boards hav a lot of overclocking potential. also way up at the top at the moment are foxconn boards.

if you go conroe:

Asus P5N32 - nVidia SLI
Asus P5W DH - ATi Crossfire

if you go AM2

Asus M2N32 - nVidia SLI
Foxxconn C51XEM2AA - nVidia SLI

out of all the reviews ive read these come tops.

as for memory, Corsair or OCZ DDR2 or like ^ said, mushkin.

as for ATi/nVidia? 7950GX2 all the way (man i love this card)

i would agree that conroe is looking good. probably the smartest way to go right now. even if amd is going with quad core soon, i doubt that it will incorporate any architecture changes. its probably going to be the same K8 based stuff.

as for video cards, i would say play it safe for now. sure the 7950 is a monster, but we're getting close to the release of vista and dx10. i would buy a so so card for now and wait for the dx10 cards.

you could wait for the g80, that sounds beef

I would recomend a DFI mainboard or a high end Asus. The AI Lifestyle series are wicked boards for gaming and overclocking.

Asus P5N32-SLI Deluxe (http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=227&model=745&modelmenu=1) <-- Intel 775 & Nvidia SLi 16x16

Asus P5B Delux (http://event.asus.com/2006/mb/P5B/models.html) <-- Intel Conroe & Dual PCI-E

Ram wise will corsair is solid I like the RAM by OCZ It is pretty slick stuff with low latency.

Check out there Platinum series Clicky (http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/high_performance/platinum_series)

Diefiently go with a high end ASUS board with two PCI-E 16x slots.

I personally would go with a 7900gtx over the 7950 but its up to you.

For you go with the conroe. I'm tempted by it but then the AMD dual core 4000+'s keep calling my name in the night. "Simon Simon Simon buy me I'm dual core and I am reasonably priced"

Any way this is all great hardware lets hope you get it all for your BDAY as this is pretty expensive stuff alltogether. Also if you are rich upgrade your HDD and get a western digital raptor. Or by 2 and raid em. Clicky (http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=190).
