So here's the deal:

i bought this super cheapo Dell puter in December with the delusions of turning it into a 'Defyant' masterpiece. Unfortunately, it was my first mod job and i guess i was a little overzealous.

problems encountered::

1. i had a week to do the modding
2. i'm a newb.

Here are some pics of the results:

Now that im on break from school and ROTC crap, im ready to go at it again. I was looking quite enthusiastically at one of the new HPServers and that crazy-hot DOOM3 machine. I need ideas from the pros though!!!

BTW, here are my specs as of yesturday:
ASUS P4V8X-MX
2x Kingston 512MB
Radeon X800 XL
Western Digital Caviar RE 160GB

biggest suggestion: dont put a time limit on yourself.

a week is nowhere near enough to make a work of art. it can take months... dare i say years.

second suggestion: patience.

patience will make the detailed work turn out better.

third suggestion: try to be original.

this may not be that easy to do after having looked at all the crazy crap going on around here, but if you can figure something out that is really cool... it makes things all the better.

so try again, take your time, and show us something wonderful.

nice work. I like the crop circle-esqe window design.

As for tips, I would agree with Slug. Take your time. Also, take time to choose your theme. Read my Modding Guide (in my sig), it might help you with getting some ideas. Then take time to plan your mod, know what you want to do with each part of the case. Anyone can cut metal, but it takes a good design to turn that cut metal into something kickass.

you should decide on the direction you want to go in. Leds, Acrylic, Flashy material, cutting out designs. Decide what you want to do with your case. Draw up a design and try to follow it. It will turn out different in the end but still, it will be based on your design =]

i'm more of a techno sort of Led person myself. I might try to put in an all acrylic side or somethin like that. Maybe some kind of lighting for the inside. I like things to be clear and simple.

Looks good! The only things I would do is put some mesh behind the holes in the front, touch up the paint on the crop-circle window, and even-out with the other drive bays, and stick a top piece on, the CD-drive cover.

Oh and maybe paint that ugly green duct :)

Pretty good for a week's work.

Yeah the paint.

I like how the dell logo got the chop and got replaced with a fan.

Maybe take some better pictuers is it just me or are they a bit dark.

The circle designs are very pretty is there plexi there or are they just holes I cant really see.

Oh and welcome to TBCS keep up the good work.

NICE GUIDE! you def get a good job sticker there. as soon as i started reading ----> the ideas started coming.

Instead of just modding the thing inside out with random ideas, i think ill start using some of the stuff around the house (i.e. the garage!). i can see how your style mods your design and the overall project you undertake. ima go for a sleeker and def cleaner look that will go well with my other equipment.

There's plexi behind the holes in the front, but for some reason i couldn't get the lighting right in there.
I searched around the garage and found an old airfilter (free mesh = OH YEAAAH) and some nice-lookin roof gutter screens. I hit the motherload.

first off, thank you for the welcome. im very glad to have found this site. you guys are awesome at what you do. keep inspiring future modders!

***Im kickin it with an archaic HP digicam and the resulting photos are kinda dark/bad.

the paint you say? : ) yeah, that was one of my biggest concerns. as i key this post, that computer is relaxing on the floor, gutted, and preped for a new paint job in fact. ;)
Aero guessed right with the origional crop circle idea, but that turned into a less green/more red eclipse idea. im thinking another black base, but instead of that annoying red circle hack job, im going to try something new.
Maybe a fade to metalic silver around the holes starting low-key with the smallest and coming around to an in-your-face comet at the bottom right.

-i think space without the red is more my speed.

Stay tuned, ill soon have a new thread featuring phase 2. Operation: Aurora
