While i was at working demolishing a mini-storage builing i found a crap load of older macintosh computers. They appear to be in working order and ill double check that later tonight. I want to use them for somthing but i dont know what i can use them for.

Here's a list of the computers:

Macintosh IIsi
Power Mac 5260/100
Power Mac 5400/120
Power Mac 7100/66
Centris 610

They are all complete except for one which is missing the hard drive and the floppy.

Is there some version of linux or an apple application that will let me turn it into a file server or anything else i may find usefull?

I'll get pics tomorrow, my digital cammera needs new batteries.

Hmm. Well, you could use them to hold doors open...maybe as an interesting artistic thingy...lol, i'm kidding.

Seriously though...

I found a few linux distro's that say they'll work on mac's. Now i have never used linux or mac so im kinda at a loss. I need to get a mac keyboard before i can even turn them on. What a stupid place for the power button.

What about a folding@home box(s) or a FTP server?
I hear you can make a damn good firewall out of an old computer.

I'd really like to put them to good use. It would make no sence to toss them out.

A couple of the macs have SCSI drives, can they be used on a pc?

Yeah, ill sell em but i want one for myself. I am just unsure which one i want. They each take a diffrent type of ram so you'll probly have to get some for which ever comp(s) you take.

From what i gather, the Centris 610 is the best performance wise but it has no HD or floppy and only 8megs of ram. The Power Mac 7100/66 is apparently the worst performer but has roughly 64megs of ram and an independant vid card(supports 2 monitors i think). The others vary. Almost nothing can be swaped from one to another. Each comp has diffrent add-on slots. Another thing is that only 2 of the Power Mac's have the built in monitor. I did manage to grab a 16" Power Vision Monitor but it doesnt seem to turn on.

Let me know which one you'd prefer. If its not the one i have my eye on, i'll be more than happy to sell it to you cheap. Roughly $15-25 plus shipping (i am unsure on price but i think somwhere in that range would do).

P.S. I know nothing about mac's :)

[Edit]
I live in Maple Ridge, BC Canada (50 klicks from Vancouver) incase you want to estimate the shipping.

Well i got the monitor to work with the 7100. It starts up but since i dont have a keyboad or mouse; there really isnt much i can do. It doesnt have an ethernet card either which really sucks.

I have to get a keyboard and mouse before i can test the 5200 & the 5400. Both of which have an ethernet card.

I found out that the desktop models have a power buttton on them but only the 7100 made the monitor turn on.

So apparently there are a few diffrent ways to use thies machines. One guy made a beowulf cluster out of a bunch of power mac's. And there is a way to set it up as a linux box

Is there a way to use a Mac box to run, like, Windows or Linux? Id like to know, since I could use one to link to my computer and do a ****load of useless things with them T_T

Lol, but seriously, I always wondered if there was a way to run Windows on them, or another OS. I could make some kind of uses with them, especially if MAC have a serial port (I know we can link two computers together with a Serial cable, XP got an option for that)

two words...

Giant Paperweights

Not only are they stylish, they bring back a certain sense of nostalgia. And trust me, those papers are goin' nowhere.

Uh you could install Linux on them. If you can get ethernet on them u could run a SAMBA server. tha way u could tranfer file between it and a windows machine. If u choose linux on it your gonna need something lite on it. try staying away from kde and gnome.

It has one stick of confirmed 16mb, the other appears to be 32 but might be 16mb. 2 extra slots for ram. Has 1 ROM SIMM and an empty L2 Cache slot. 500mb SCSI Drive, 3 NuBus slots, 1 VDS slot. Radius Graphics, And another unknown graphics card that didnt turn on the monitor.

I'll go $25 for the comp and $35 if you want the monitor aswell.

I have no keyboard or mouse for this comp.

You should have seen my apartment when i was working on a project. Parts and pieces on any available surface. Man i hate stepping on lost screws.

Anyway... I can afford to let this go. I just got a free dell as a promotion for getting adsl. I'll let ya have the comp and mon for $20 and you deside weather or not you want to pay the shipping on the monitor or get one yourself.

Also, if you want to save a bit more money, i'll send you all the parts and you can toss em in another case. The case is heavy.
