I see where your going with the polyurethane...and that is just sick. Wonderfull idea. Keep us posted.

polyurethane is one of the easiest sculpting materials to use, i dont know why its not popular. maybe the mess it comes with when you start to shape it? :D anyways that tilted case is unique. lets see some more.:D

cool idea. are you worried about HDD working at an angle?

Frakk
05-08-2005, 02:23 PM
some of his data might shift to the left due to the angle, but nothing to be worried about. little screen adjustment to the right and its like never happened :D

jonopaul01
05-08-2005, 02:25 PM
Hmmmm, Good point, I had never thought of that. I suppose the bias on the one side of the HDD could definitly shorten the life. But then I think that it would be a little difficult to fix that. And I think that most HDDs are obsolete long before they break down so... I asked one of my friends who works with hardware and he says that it is probably not good for it and it's best just to keep it level.
Is there a practical way to keep it level? Well good luck, looks like a nice mod.

Frakk: I find that it is far easier just to move your monitor to the left. That way you don't need to adjust it.

lol i was just joking. having a hard drive in an angle wont damage it. just think about laptops, mp3 players, any kind of disk players, cases with vertical hd mountings. the only moving parts are the disks and the reading heads. angles dont have any affect on the spinning disks(rotational movement) and most moving heads are balanced out for the same reason even though they are not moving.http://h30143.www3.hp.com/images/options/hard%20drive111.jpg
even if they are not balanced out, they are so light that moving them an angle wont cause any damage to the servos.

Vary nice dude not my style but sweet none the less. :)

jonopaul01
05-12-2005, 11:41 AM
I suppose you are right. It is just that those readers are only microns away from the disk so basically any movement is going to affect it. But I have had HDDs lying around on my desk while running for months on end without problems.

I think the problems with having hdds at an angle is that it causes the load to not be distributed evenly on the bearings on the spinning platters. The obvious effect of this would be that the bearings would fail faster in the part that has greater load. This, however, tends to be a problem that takes some time to be an issue. Depending on how much activity the HDD really sees, it may take a year or longer. Beyond that, there should be no effect to having them mounted at an angle.

Guttenaffe
05-12-2005, 11:29 PM
Shouldn't be too hard to mount them level, here are two off the top of my head methods.

Well, this one would depend on how many you want to put into this mod.
Another 'complementary' angle HDD mounting bracket can make your HDD(s) mount level.

Also could hollow out the base and put them inside there and run lines to um.
I think putting them below would look the "cleanest" but would require a little airflow to and over/around them.

Hello.

Nice work. Only one question.

If you put all the stuff inside the case, it might bend over to its side.
Have you put some counter-weight inside the "rocky-space"??

great work.
