Ok, so I just recieved my Masscool WhisperRock II socket A CPU cooler. I got it installed turned on my computer, went into the BIOS, and the first few times my computer froze. I tried again after a half hour at the hardware store, and finally got to the "PC Health Status" screen. I looked at the CPU Temperature, only to find it at +80ºC!!! After just turning on my computer!!! With my old AMD heatsink, my temps. were about 40ºC after general computer for maybe an hour. I'm sure the fan is working properly, and the heatsink is mounted correctly too. What could be the problem???

check the bottom of the heatsink. is there a plastic cover you might have forgotten to take off? thermal grease you forgot to put on? mounted properly (meaning good contact everywhere)?

if everything seems alright.. try the old heatsink for the heck of it and see what happens. if the old one bring the temperature back down... something is wrong with the heatsink (not likely) or the way you put it on.

Well, I know that there isn't plastic, and I know that the thermal grease is on (as I accidently put my finger in it when I picked it up). The spot where my finger was isn't on the CPU, so I don't think that would be the problem. I will take it off and put it back on and see what happens.

Edit: Hmmmmm... After fiddling with the heatsink while still attached to my CPU, I found that one side was more securely attached than the other. BUT, my heatsink is attached correctly.

Edit 2: Hmmmmm again... I took the heatsink off and replaced it, and now the other side is not on tight. Cooler malfunction?

This is super awesome. I think the cooler killed my CPU. But I guess I can expect that after it running at +90ºC. It was only running like that for like 20 seconds, but like 20 seconds 10 times. Awesome, isn't it?

One of my co-workers installed a dual opteron without heatsinks and kept wondering why it would shutdown before he had a chance to load linux. He futzed with it for a day and ahalf before turning it over to me (wouldn't let me near it while he was working on it), and I noticed right away that it was missing heatsinks (real noob move and he is my manager). Installed the correct heatsinks and the systems was fine and has been running for months now.

We don't let him near the intel or amd systems anymore...

Oh well I guess. I just posted a thread selling the good parts, so I guess it's all good.
