Hey Everyone,

I'm cleaning out my closet of computer stuff and I found these great clear acrylic drive bays. These are used in clear acrylic computer cases and can only be salvaged from old cases - they aren't sold anywhere. Anyways, I have these from an old case, retailing at 80 bucks.

I also have these drive bays in UV blue acrylic!

10 bucks, anyone? Willing to trade/negotiate. Buyer pays shipping, give me your zip and I'll give you a quote, shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks!

They are the same except UV Blue, but I'm going to charge 12 dollars for them since they are worth almost double in the price of acrylic. Also, shipping to Boulder Creek, CA is $7.00 by priority mail.

Quick question to everyone....

Would anybody be interested in these items in say yellow or white acrylic? They wouldn't have the brass inserts on the bottom but would otherwise be very much the same. I could put small tabs, sort of like wings, on the side of them so you could screw/bolt them down.

What's the white look like? Maybe. :)

Clear or opaque yellow?

Clear or opaque yellow?

Clear, like the kind used on my cirque du soleil case.

The white is mostly opaque, very slightly translucent, enough to hold a color (light a cathode or LED).

This is certainly not something I'm completely offering yet, this is just an option if both of those pre-made ones sell out. The reason I offer is because I have the tools here to make these pieces, I just don't know if I want to commit to it quite yet.

However, if there is a demand, I could very well end up making these in many different colors. Anybody interested?

If you're making the white kind, could you make it custom to a specific case? I'm thinking of putting one in my mother's case I'm modding right now.

Yes, probably. Let me know how many 3.5" bays and how many 5.25" bays you need, I'll give you an estimate.

EDIT: I just got a great idea. What If I started making these, and if requested, I put LED's into the acrylic? How sweet would that be, a glowing acrylic drive cage.

I would need three 5.25 bays, but I don't know right now many 3.5 ones I'd need. I'll get back to you on that.

And do you mean cutting out holes for us to put LEDs in, or doing that yourself? Either way is ok, of course... 8)

I was thinking I'd do it myself, but of course if you'd like to do your own that just saves me the trouble and time.

I don't think something like that has ever been done before... I've always wanted to do it but currently don't need any drive bays. Maybe you could be the inspiration. Lol

hey id be interested in one for 2x5 1/2 inch bays, and a separate one for 3x3 1/2inch bays. deffo be white. im not 100% on my case design yet, but using a chassis is a better idea that mounting everything to the bottom acrylic.

tybrenis, if u do decide to make custom acrylic thingies... how much would you charge for this and it's mirror image? >>>

What are it's dimensions? How wide are the holes? That would be pretty tricky/expensive (30 dollars-ish?)

Alright, to see if I can make this whole thing work out, I'll try manufacturing one of your cages today. Check back in about a half an hour and I'll post up my sketchup options.

EDIT: Okay, here is a sketchup drawing of the first design.

The second design. This one, instead of mounting to the bottom of the case and standing upright, one could be hung from the top of the case, or, of course, traditionally mounted on the bottom.

if you could do the second design in a 5 1/2, with 2 bays, and a 3 1/2 with 3 bays, ill be interested

the above is just a screen capture of a sketch.. i was thinking of doing something similar to some lian-li cases, because this would add strenght no matter what material i'd use.. i was thinking aluminum at 1st.. as i have some.. but it woiuld be nicer in acrylic(smoked...) :)
the piece would be ~520mm x 600mm-ish, after bending the tabs for mounting.. and instead of the wide holes there would be some small, standard-like holes 4 mounting 5,25 devices.. like on the rack on top of the page.. it's just that i don't want any 3,5 devices :) i can make more technical drawings and send .max or .3ds files if this would help.
so, when your saying 30ish.. one piece or both sides? cause after i'll move back in the campus, i can do some transactions :) and this would be so ice to have done :)

Do you want them seperately? (One cage for only the 5.25" drives and one cage for the 3.5" drives)

I could do the same design housing both of them, or I could do two seperate cages, probably.

Yeah, that sounds fine. 30 ish would be for the entire cage and it's making - that would cover both sides, the bending/gluing, the cutting and hole routing, and flame polishing of the piece.
