View Full Version : Why SPAM?

Since I've been coming on here I've noticed alot of spam  ... Whats up with that?
Why on earth would somebody purposely come on here on post ads and such? And if they're automated why is tbcs.com on their lists?
I've noticed alot of spam goes in the "Get Processed" forum, why there?
I just don't get it at all...
Can anyone enlighten me? :?

I don't know why there is lots of spam in the "Get Processed" forum, but I can tell you why I think TBCS gets lots of spam. There are lots of users here, whether they be active or only guests. The more people see the ads, the more potential business they have. But that is only what I think so I am probably wrong.

I have to admit. Spam sucks. But at least its not the end of the world ^_^

like i said in that good joke thread... i would love to be able to trace back to where these things are coming from and... cause a little trouble. ive got nothing against advertising, but this isnt the place, and i highly doubt the people here need any of the drugs and/or services that keep getting thrown our way. the majority of us are still teens, and i dont think many exceed the age of 30... why would we need viagra and celebrex?
this pharmaceutical stuff is one of the things that annoy me the most. the tv adds are hard enough to understand, and its made up to sound like you need that stuff to live no matter what. people are impressionable, and WILL take something they really dont need as long as they think they need it, and thats whats happening, and it does damage. thats just wrong... i cant even put it into more specific words its so wrong. if you could feel my rage right now... you would know how wrong it is, just before your head explodes. stupid piece of &!$? drug companies.
but yes, spam=bad, me=mad, and if i ever find the people responsible to polluting our heads like this... they=toast!

Maybe there should be a 24 hour cooling down period after you sign up as this would prevent automated postings. Or maybe even you have to enter in a special number that appears in a picture everytime you post. These prevent agaisnt auto posting.
To combat the spam problem maybe we need another moderator or two to help share the load and give the forum 24hour moderator coverage to help combat these nasties.
Or maybe a button that says spam and if 5 different members press it then the spam thread gets removed from view or locked and then the mods can decided wethter to delete it or not.
Just my 2 cents I'm not trying to stir up trouble.

i would be in favour of that. heck, id volunteer for that because im in the same time zone that rank is in, and i could cover while he goes off every once in a while. i definitely spend enough time sitting idle in front of the computer... might as well put me to better use. this recent stint of pharmacy stuff has just really gotten me in the mood to try and make a difference. try being the key word.
i think in an ideal situation, we need 4 guys spaced evenly throughout the time zones. its not a perfect world though.

Back in the day before Al Gore invented this interweb thingy, spammers were attacked by everyone they sent email to (one or two a day back then, about 800 per day now (that I know of)). My work place had me and another guy setup a mailserver that would send out a couple of thousand emails to anyone who spammed us. Now they call that a DOS attack and put you in jail. To some of the world we were hero's for spending the money on HW and time just to do it (the SCO license alone was over $5k just for the OS). I have a dream, of the day when spammers will be bent over the urinal in that 9x6 cell they call home...

I would volunteer as a mod as no one is really in my time zone and I spend hours on this forum.
Just wait till ranken gets back and logs on some serious ass kickery is going to take place.

I have a pretty short memory, so this question might sound dumb, really dumb. Does TBCS send you an activation code after you sign up? If not, will it discourage spammers, or at least slightly?
Maybe the "Currently Active Users" could be seen only by us. So spammers won't know how popular for sure this forum is.
I really don't know anything about coding but I can ask a friend for some way better suggestions than mine to stop the spam.
I am mad too but at least it isn't as bad and rampant as e-mail spam. I hope it never comes to that point though! It would be awesome to stop spam completely on here.

I did a Google search and found this that might help stop it. The article is a bit old and probably the new spam bots have found a way to bypass it.

Those are more for personal sites and not forums.

Ok guys, i have seen this thread, but it's not my decision and i'm the only one around. At the moment, we aren't looking for any more mods, but we might be starting to look for people to help run the site at later dates. (In fact, we're already doing this through the TBCS needs writers (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3096) thread.)
If we do, then the chances are we're going to pick from the people who've volunteered (and proven themselves) through our writing project.
So everyone can calm down for the moment: also, my word is far from law. It's Paul who runs the joint and at the end of the day, the decisions are his to finalise.

Spam is hardly unique to TBCS. It happens in every forum, even the most heavily moderated ones.
THe worst thing you can do is reply to it. The best thing you can do is hit the "report bad post" button in the thread, which sends an email to Dave and I, who will get to it as quickly as possible. Usually it is a matter of minutes, but this weekend I'm away from a regular computer I can use, so you guys just have to tough it out.
We're not looking for mods right now. Don't stress on trying to become one. We've got a lot of stuff going and are always looking for help on it, and Dave is right - the ones who havce proven they are willing to take extra measures to help the site and have proven themselves trustworthy with additional reponsibility and such are usuallyt he first to get considerationf or that title.
Dave's word is as good as law until Paul says otherwise.
I'm not getting home until much later today, so I won't get to do much else on the forum here, but please be patient and stop replying and bumping the spam posts - just report them and we'll get to them asap.

He's not due back till tommorow as far as i'm aware, so he must have found a net cafe somewhere. Shouldn't be too hard to get online at PAX.

you'd be amazed. No wifi available in the conference center - I was shocked. Took some real tricks to get online.
I'm finally home now, and absolutely dead tired - I just ate my first meal of the day (it is nearly 10 pm) and am running on about 3 hours sleep from last night and 4 the night before, so this is the only post I'm opening or replying to. The rest will have to wait.
The PAX case mod contest went well, and we hope to have it be much, much larger next year - the expo is moving out of the Meydenbauer and into the Washington State Convention Center, which allows for much, much more room. We had over 18,000 people in attendence this year, and I had a very good time - stayed up until nearly 6 am playing tabletop games last night, for instance - but I really, really need to go and get some sleep if I'm to be any use at all tomorrow at work.
I'll have a full write-up on the event by the end of the week. Look for it then.

I'd love to fly out for it next year...we don't have such glitzy things in the UK. It would be nice to go to one of these things once in my life.

No girl is worth dictating your life. If it is fun for you do it and let no-one bring you down.
Hell, my wife HATES video games and still understands the pleasure it brings me to play them. In turn I do not throw it in her face when I've had a outstanding round or a crappy one. She encourages the modding since it is creative and makes me happy. (she does get a little pissed if I leave the dremel and cord out though)
