View Full Version : What to do with extra case LEDs?

I have this case (http://www.chenbro.com.tw/product/product_preview.php?pid=74&spec=1) that I'm currently cutting up and painting for an SMP system. It has the standard power/HDD LEDs, but then has an additional 6 LEDs that all use the same 2pin connectors as all other LEDs/switches in cases.
Any ideas on what I can do with them? I'd had to have them go to waste...but I don't have anything else I can plug into the motherboard.
I thought about showing fan power status...but I'm using a fan controller and that could get ugly.
It would be great to use it for something like CPU load, but the only way I could imagine doing that would be through a parallel/serial/usb bus - and I run linux a good deal of the time.
So do you guys have any other ideas feasible by an electronics novice?
Thanks

SMP stands for symetric multiprocessing system, right? hmm..
usually, those leds are used for more hdd activity lights, if the mobo/ctrler suports them.. so.. what are u using? and will there be only one mobo+Stuff in there...? what mobo? more info..
one use for a led is to hook it as the system speaker.. so beeps show as flashes.. :)
edit: more uses: activity light for optical unit, for NIC.. hook it up in parallel with the video fan, if that's not controlled, to show video power state ;)

ahem here is what you could do with them .. a few ideas anyways. you could try to do the whole nightrider thing like someone else on here. or if your fortunat enough to have a raid array then you can hook them up to show individual disk access. even if you have ata raid you can do it by modifying one of the wires on the cable.
included is a link to a guide on doing this by one of the better modders i have ever seen.

It will house an Asus K8N-DL (dual socket 940) and a pair of Opteron 265s. Unfortunately, despite having IDE RAID, and two seperate SATA RAID controllers (each with 4 sata connections), there is a grand total of one HDD activity light connection on the board. Thanks for the other ideas though.

That would be very nice, but I'll only have one IDE HDD in this system, the others will be SATA.
Thanks though, let me know if you think of anything else.
