View Full Version : Inverted ATX Mod

I've been meaning to try something out. I have this old case that I want to convert from ATX to Inverted ATX. All I'll have to do is flip the back plate of the case so that the motherboard will sit on the left.

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/6663/atx01is9.jpg

I pulled the rivets out

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/8734/atx02ae0.jpg

Then detached the back

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/6338/atx03lt6.jpg

I also removed the removable motherboard support beam

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/7897/atx04zw2.jpg

I flipped the back over and re-attached it with new rivets.

http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/9545/atx05sc8.jpg

And here you go.

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/6706/atx06yt3.jpg
http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/1774/atx07ei4.jpg

Then I put the motherboard tray with a dead mobo still attached (For the look)

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/7519/atx08wc2.jpg

And reinstalled the support beam.

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/4849/atx09um5.jpg
http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/2401/atx10pn5.jpg

I put the future Power Supply in so you can tell where I'm going with this.

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/6968/atx11aj0.jpg

For this project I will be using some old mesh I've had laying around.

http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/8828/atx12sv0.jpg

I'm still working on the case theme, but I do a have a pretty good idea.

nice start
I have an old AT case I was thinking about turning into a BTX. You've inspired me.

cool Idea, I had occasionally wanted my psu at the bottom (but with intake drawing from under case through a filter), but in a show of pure DUHness never thought to flip that whole area and just redrill the mount. So thank you for that, might actually have to do it one day now :( :P

will the ram interfere with your btx schemings?
I know you said this is not the board you are using, but that is a fairly common atx placement.

am now waiting with baited breath to see how this comes about.

cool new project.. i have a couple of Qs/suggestions:
1. will it be trully btx? e.g the duct running from the front?
2.how much are you willing to reconstruct the case? e.g.: it coulod use 120mm fans in the front and back.. but this involeves some cutting...
3.what will u put in there? because if you do it all-out on cooling, i'm thinking o/c? :)

ah... did i say this is a "cool" idea? ;) :D

TheGreatSatan

NO duct.

I will construct a shield over the bottom sucking the hot air out of the front. So obviously, there'll be a blow hole on the front, probably 80mm. No idea of the color of the case or any real theme.

The case, like many others will be built as just a case. I will put parts in it to get some 'computer' shots, but when I'm done it will stay empty.

TheGreatSatan

Today I worked on the heat shield. This will ensure that air sucked in through the blowhole will make it to the PSU and back out the case.

http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/6412/shield1wv8.jpg

It took about a half hour to get it ready

lolz I still have Micron case from 1996. But its Plastic and aluminum. It is the skinniest case I've ever seen. Check it out in the trading post.

I marked some hole for rivets. They will hold the heat shield in place.

http://img453.imageshack.us/img453/4313/shieldrivet1dh0.jpg

And set them.

As of right now I'm thinking of a blue case. Maybe some white or silver later on.

It's called "Make it Stone" by Krylon. There's many to choose from. Just point and squeeze! I got mine at a local hobby store, but I've seen them at Walmart too

I have something new to report. Someone from my local area has seen this mod and wants to buy it. From this point on I WILL complete the Mod, but to the customers specifications. He said he does want a blow hole, but the window design he's still considering. I'll see him soon to plot where the mod is headed.

will that stone stuff gunk things up? making it hard to slide the sides of the case on and off? or putting in screws or anything?

TheGreatSatan
09-07-2006, 12:16 PM
OK, the customer wants a wolverine based theme from the 2nd X-Men movie. He wants the case to look like it could have been from that abandoned military base in Canada called Alkali Lake. It needs to have a lot of dirty snow and blood. I added some "blood" to the case, but I have no idea as to where to go from here and how to incorporate wolverine into the theme. The PSU will go. It will be decorated with RED Lighting

http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/5246/massacre1yb2.jpg

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/3503/massacre2nb9.jpg

Maybe Wolverine claw windows? What about the front bezel? What do you think?

chedabob
09-07-2006, 12:31 PM
have a window, with wolverin claw marks on the side. and possibly hide the 3 blades somewhere in the case. or, cover up both sides, and on the left side, cut holes like wolverines claws, have some lighting, and have three blades coming through.

i think you could do that easily by just dremeling the lines, then using pliers to bend it outwards.

TheGreatSatan

Maybe Wolverine claw windows like from the cover of Wolverine #50?

I actually got them at Directron. Anyway, the buyer likes where the case is going, but is shying away from the X-Men and Wolverine. He asked me make a small piece of aluminum black with the rock paint and liked it, so that's where I'm going.

Anyways, looks great. One question. Does that stone stuff expand a lot? Like do you have any trouble getting things to fit back properly now that you painted? It looks like some pretty thick stuff. Also, nice blowholes.

Obsidian sounds cooler, and looks cooler too. But it looks way more like granite to me.

i, being a geology guy, should take you outside and beat you for saying that. you would not believe how many geologists get put off when you say stuff like that. even "granite" isnt really granite. if you call it granite, you're taking your life in your own hands because you have about a 10% chance of being right. granite is the stuff you see that is mostly light coloured, and has pink in it. a rock as dark as that case is either porphyritic dacite or gabbro, which are NOT granite. they are much higher in magnesium and iron than granite, and have practically no feldspar in them. basically... that means its not granite. i guess i can let it slide this time... but dont let me catch you again or ill get my professors after you for a good full day of field geology head-cleansing.

actually, i wonder if project gabbro sounds any good. gabbro IS a funny word, even in the most serious of times.

<EDIT> looking back a bit further... im putting a few of you on notice for referring to it as obsidian and granite. be careful, you dont want the wrath of me coming down on you. it tickles.

whats going on now? you dont/didnt need to delete anything. i was just making a correction and stating that most geologists actually DO get pretty up tight when you start calling everything granite. but... if you already deleted... well you didnt have to, lets leave it there.

i think that whole thing sounded a bit angry too. just so you dont start getting ideas that im some sort of fanatic... im not. imagine that in a sort of sarcastic tone for the most part. even though those geologists dont like mistakes, they in fact arent really fanatics either. they're big party people. one of my professors actually "snuck" a keg of beer on a bus for a field trip one time.

anyways... how about that name gabbro? it sounds funky. for some reason i always think peewee herman when i hear gabbro.

In my opinion you should make your own rules for your own worklogs, so i'm going to ignore the Retard comment for now, but please try and keep the personal attacks off the boards from now on.

EDIT: And i should really say that it's an intersting paintjob you have going on there. Good effect. Your buyer decided what they want yet? (The reason i don't work for money, it would drive me up the wall to have someone trying to dictate to me what i can and can't do, what themes to work with, etc. I need creative liscence, or i don't do the damn job.)

I like the window, but i'm going to be honest and say i'm not liking the power button. It looks too...out of place. And then, because i've noticed that, it makes me think that the fans look too exposed.

I'm not sure what I'd suggest to improve it-maybe sprinkle it with some black paint? It doesn't look too bad, and it's probably only a little detail, but it would annoy me if it were my computer.

Still, everything else looks pretty original. Watching to see where this strange mod ends up.

Nice use of the stone paint. I used the same stuff in my first mod a few years back.

One warning with it I can say after having hauled it through 3 countries worth of moves...the stuff does 'dry' to a very rubbery texture, and when it chips, it comes off in large peeling sections.

I'm not sure if it's the same brand that I used, but, if your paint is coming out smooth enough, I'd *highly* recommend throwing down a clear coat if you can to help prevent paint damage. Unfortunatley it wasn't an option for me, as the paint I used is very textured to give it a more 3d look.

Great work on the case though...I'll try to dig for pictures of my black-rock-paint and red-neon case. Or...I'll just go home and take some, it's being used as my entertainment center right now in the living room. :)
