Adding Touchscreen to an existing LCD?

Hey

From what I understand, Touchscreen's are LCD's with some clear layer over the top that plugs into a serial port to input data to the computer, so i'm wondering if I could buy the clear thing to put on a laptop LCD which will become a photoframe mp3 PC etc...

LCD is about 30cmx20cm 1024x768 laptop screen..

This is probably the only way as far as what I know on how to change an ordinary screen into a touch screen.

Budget isnt exactly unlimited on this mod, so i'll have to give it a pass on the touchscreen :(...

Maybe i'll add a few buttons to the case to interface with the mp3 center... Also might have to build a few LIRC remotes (http://www.lirc.com)

Anybody know any how-to's on adding buttons and interfacing them with a serial port on windows, I'm thinking a Ipod minimalist style for the buttons, but havnt settled down on a single idea as of yet...

I've forgotten the link but i did see a tutorial for setting up some buttons to change songs in winamp. They connect to a serial port. There are allready drivers available so you wont have to make a program of your own to set it up.
