i just got 2 of my comps up and running, i was thinking i dont want to use 2 mice and 2 keyboards... so i looked into KVM... but i still wanted 2 monitors...
i found this about 2 years ago, and i finally tried it out today...
and might i say its pretty badass... (http://www.stardock.com/products/multiplicity/)

or for free you can use:

tightvnc

You can setup vnc to use a single mouse/keyboard _and_ still use the monitor attached to the computer or have it display on the local system. vnc works on macOS, windows, linux, IRIX, and... Solaris

OK... I was getting tired of the pop up window and the time limit issues with multiplicity. I couldnt find a crack for the program so i had to do some research and find another way. So i ended up at http://sourceforge.net/projects/synergy2/ . This program does the same thing as multiplicity but A) its geared towards the advanced user B) it'll let you control many computers (available only in multiplicity pro) C) Its free.

One thing to note if anyone is going to try the program. When your setting up the screens, you have to make 2 links per screen. One link for each direction. Otherwise your mouse will move to the next computer but wont move back.

i'll be honest tight vnc wasn't to great from my point of view just because it didn't support file transfers, i really like ultravnc. but yeah the latency issues even on a local network are fairly annoying.
