I though this would be a really cool thing to get the forums involved in. Basicly, you donate CPU time to institutions that dont have access to super computers to crunch numbers. You can join a number of diffrent projects. Search for extra terestrial life, find a cure to cancer, help explore the realm of quantum particles, ect, ect...

You can download the Bonic Manager here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

I have created a TheBestCaseScenario team for the fallowing projects:

Setti@Home
Spinhenge@home
Rosetta@home

There are a bunch of other projects to choose from, thies are the ones i have created a team for. You can start your own TBCS team for a diffrent project if you wish.

Ok modders, lets show thies guys what we can do when we put our brains and our computers together. I have Bonic running on my secondary machine all the time (default is only when idle). I know lots of you have more than one computer and you cant possibly use more than one at a time. So run Bonic on your secondary machine and lets cure cancer together.

folding@home is one of the better causes that distributed cokmputing is aimed towards, in my opinion. basically the program takes your "spare" cpu cycles and uses them to fold protiens. the idea is to find protiens that can help with things like curing cancer or diseases. way back before i moved out of my parents house i had a mini folding farm going. now that im living on my own, i have to pay for my own electricty, and DC farms can get expensive cuz your cpus are constantly running at full capacity.

i like folding@home too. thats because i know whats going on when i look at the nifty screen savers. right now im on a project that looks at a protein called tryptophan. ive had others where the ribosome tunnel is being analyzed for affinities and such. very cool.

there have been a few published findings so far. i dont really know how important they have been because i dont have access to all the journals and stuff, but its cool to hear about results anyways.

it has the potential to provide a means to solve quite a few problems, from cancer to parkinsons, so im all for it.

Yeah, i've seen folding@home before. Personally i like Bonic. It lets me contribute to, up to 18 diffrent programs.

Biology and Medicine
World Community Grid
Rosetta@home
SIMAP
Predictor@home
Tanpaku
Malariacontrol.net
Earth Sciences
Seasonal Attribution Project
Climateprediction.net
BBC Climate Change Experiment
Astronomy/Physics/Chemistry
SETI@home
LHC@home
Spinhenge@home
Einstein@home
Quantum Monte Carlo at Home
Mathematics and strategy games
Chess960@home
Rectilinear Crossing Number
Riesel Sieve
SZTAKI Desktop Grid

I think its better to be able to pick your cause's.

I got a nifty screensaver also. Each program has its own unique screensaver.

Seti@home since 1999
14,712 hours of CPU time (and I still haven't found ET).
I'm in the top 30% but I'm falling behind because my CPUs are very old.

Are you in a team cevinzol?

You can allways contribute to a diffrent program too.

I was thinking about doing SETI@home, but can you turn it on and off? I don't have any spare computers to use for it, but I may be able to keep my computer on while I'm at school, but I don't want that running while I'm playing games and such.

i got a bunch of crappy computers in my garage that i could shove a few cycles onto :P

ill put it on my main one and watch the program... I could put it onto one of my laptops too...

wow. This thing gives my CPU high temps (114 so far... Expected high @ 120). But the case is still cold from that high output fan I installed (case is 86, lol).

Boinc manager installs itself with a couple of options that you can change anytime from the website. options like how many work units to download at a time. SETI sets a deadline for each work unit, if you dont finish it in time they re-release it for someone else to proccess.

Inside Boinc manager under 'file' you can choose "run always", "base on preferences" (you set those on the website) or you can "Suspend" it. It also loads in the systray so you can change it there too.

Boinc also appears on your screen saver list so you can have it only running when idle.

I have the manager set to always running but I don't have it in my startup or registry 'run' area. Then I have a shortcut on my destop:
Target="C:\Program Files\Seti\boincmgr.exe"
Start in="C:\Program Files\Seti\"
That way I can easily start it up but it doesn't bog down my boot up if I'm in a hurry. Anytime I wan to purge it from the system I just exit the manager.

WARNING NOTE: I'm not sure if its just my setup but I have had problems with BOINC when it uploads and down loads work units. Its seems to pre-empt all other network traffic while its communicating. Its not uncommon for me to be surfing the web and have Internet explorer lockup along with any streaming music I'm running or java based webgame. Task manager lists 3 things:
- boinc.exe
- boincmgr.exe
- setiathome_5.15_windows_intelx86.exe (one copy per CPU, so I see 2)
you can end those process trees and restart the other apps but after wards boinc seems to need a cold boot in order to start up again.

then again it might just be my antique system.

Are you in a team cevinzol? No I'm not but if I was these guys would be my first choice since I'm a member.

Onto this subject again. Joined the Rosetta@Home server (folding and docking proteins, etc.). Has a nice screensaver/graphic to it, and it hauls ass on a dual core (actually starts two projects on a dual core and simultaneously processes them). Seems like each client likes to run 5 threads and use high memory (around 120-150 MB each).

Computers running BOINC currently:

-Intel Pentium D 915 Presler OCed to 2.9 GHz with DDR2 667 (now DDR2 720) 1 GB memory.

-Intel Celeron at 1.8 Ghz with DDR 333 384 MB memory (aka the file server).

Racked up 550 credits within two nights.

i used to do this a ways back and even got a (i think it was 100) sets or blocks or how ever they measure it printable award hahah. i stopped doing it becuase they changed to that retarded bonic crap.

EDIT: it was workunits and i got 401

SETI@home member since 26 Jul 2004
