"Top Gear's Richard Hammond is seriously ill in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the BBC programme.
The 36-year-old presenter was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary's neurological unit.
A spokesman for the hospital said Mr Hammond was "stable".
Mr Hammond had been driving a dragster-style car capable of reaching 300mph at the former RAF airfield in Elvington, near York."

I heard it was some sort of rocket-car he was driving. Apparently he hit something at 80mph. After having seen what happens in a car between 30 and 40mph, the man is damn lucky to have made it to the hospital at all. Do that in any normal type of car, and you're picking bits of your arms off the road with your gums, on account of your teeth having gone missing too.
Seriously, can you imagine an 80mph impact? The victorians thought the human body would explode if it ever went faster than 60mph!
I wonder what he hit? You can sure as hell bet it won't be walking away.

Oddly I have never heard of the guy, but he sounds famous so I hope he makes it! lol kind of odd how everyone wishes the best for celebrities but when it comes to the numbers of everyday people I hear not a slight mention of them.. odd.
Eh anyways, in a very mormid kind of way, if it was an animal that he hit, I would oddly love to see that. That thing would be GONE! I actually think I saw a video of a rabbit run across the road and a nice car with body kits and all that jazz hit it and basically exploded the animal everywhere. The front of his car was also gone, funny how such a lil rabbit could do so much damage!
On the topic of rocket cars, is it possible to have a rocket car and have it street legal I wonder?

Don't forget the rocket bug Mita. I too would be morbidly interested in seeing what he hit. Any links to the exploding rabbit?
imagine what the common fly feels like getting hit at 80mph

well they say the dude is stabile now so that is good!
as for 80mph, i dont get it... that would be 128 km/h, its not that much, think 100 or 150 mph then it gets nice....
ouu and Mita, the road was a race track and the nice car with body kits and all that jazz was a nissan nismo customized for track use
i used to have that clip, damn it, cant finde it...!!!

I watch top gear every day! I SERIOUSLY hope he pulls through because it would be a huge loss to the show and to all the other shows he's in - In my opinion he's one of the best if not the best british presenter we have ever had.
Let's hope we dont loose him eh?

Guys, read the article Gearhead linked..
The dragster car he was driving was believed to have been travelling at about 300mph when it crashed. not 80mph.
He is seriously lucky to be alive. Don't expect him back on that show real soon.
BTW TopGear's site
http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/ no doubt they will have updates on it.

you sure it isnt a mercedes or lexus? thats what it looks like to me....plus nismo isnt the name of a nissan. nismo is OEM performance parts just for nissan like SVT is for ford or TRD for toyota ;)

damn, ma bad
but now that i see the clip... mercedes all the way
funny thing i used to have a friend that died that way:(
270 on a high way, he hit a mouse, the car started to drift to the right and the it fliped, its kinda hard to colect your friend from a twisted pile of metal
that is why is hard for me to hear of a car crash, and i hope the guy gets well i realy love the show

I'm a big Hamster fan and I found this link today of the crash with The Hampster saying what happened:
http://media.fairfax.com.au/?sy=smh&category=Breaking%20News&rid=25308
It was labelled as breaking news, so the video may not stay at that link for long, but I'm sure it is probably already on YouTube...
Edit: Found a YouTube link to the 10 minute bit from Top Gear:
