So other than the obvious like an online messenger... what are some good ways of talking to someone long distance? Such as from the united states to finland?

Has anyone played with skype?
I have a friend who moved to india. Another friend tried talking to him using something like teamspeak. They first sent e-mails with each others IP adress and then set up the app. I was told it was really crackly and bad. I know the person in the USA was on a 56k dial up so I'm not sure how much that affected it. I'm interested because I have several friends who I'd like to talk to without racking up a huge LD phone bill.
How does Skype handle dynamic IP addresses?

HA! actually as I get older I wish my parents were closer. Now when I was 18, I wanted to be as far away as possible. :)
Its nice having them in florida though, free lodging when we go and visit!:D

HF radio on the 20m band is best. An old set will set you back around $375. And ariels can be made for under $5 bucks. If you are more technically inclided you can build a set for under $10 that does morse code only.
For the average person, voip solutions are your best bet.
I use skype to talk to an old girlfriend that lives in Turkey. Works great for being free.
Both users need a mic and speakers/headphones. Easy and available.
Get user accounts on skype and get each others IM account info. Chat a bit first, then both load skype and connect to the other person and talk. It's that easy once you set it up.
As for teamspeak, works well as long as you have a server hosting it. Very clear and crisp voice.

Wasn't the whole idea of this without a computer
lol well the whole idea of this was to find a way around using a computer.
This is why I suggested HF radio.
You could allways write them a letter I know its old fashion but delievery is pretty quick these days. Anyhting international inolving mobiles is expensive. Like $5 intenational txts.
