I've been thinking for a long time to do something out there. I want to make a PC with a little something different going for it. It's hard to explain what the final product will be, but stick around it'll be interesting.

Here's the victim case.

http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/8537/thin01cj6.jpg

I'm gonna make it real thinner. Watch this.

...ah well, where is the fun in buying a case that needs no modding...:p

Jack, the case ripper... :p

The no so obvious question... How about the opticals and others? Above the PCI?

DaveW
09-22-2006, 06:59 AM
There could be just enough space for a laptop drive and a laptop optical just in front of the PSU. Ventilation's going to be a bitch though. Nice idea...you planning to go for the well finished pro look for this case, or are you going with a theme? Or, as I suspect, are you just playing around with ideas ;)

Here's the shell for the UPS I won't be needing anymore.

http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/114/upsfit1ps4.jpg

And it was cut in half too.

http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/1985/upsfit2jt4.jpg

I then realized that my ATX case wasn't thin enough...

http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/9284/upsfit3iu7.jpg

DaveW
09-23-2006, 07:20 AM
Crikey, that's going to look interesting. An idea come to me, you could get a sort of led light running down the front of the case, kinda like the front of the car in knight rider, but a single light running downwards only...it would look pretty sweet in a smooth perspex front, and would accentuate the height of the case, especially if it came from the top-kind of like it was doing laps?

I bondo'ed the back at the bottomto make it look like it's one case and not two joined together. I'll do more later to complete that look.

I added the support bar.

I cut it to fit.

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/9678/swingbar2mi7.jpg

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/4971/bay1np7.jpg

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/6641/bay2di7.jpg

I'm going to hinge the left panel, but first I made it blue

Just when you think you've figured out TGS, he goes and comes up with something completely and utterly absurd in concept, then turns it into something beautiful and amazing in execution.

We need more people like TGS.

TheGreatSatan

I put a window on the right side so the PSU would be exposed.

Then I put in the mobo. The original board is DEAD, so my cheapo PC Chips board is in...

I still have to add the power button and clean up the top, before my next project starts rolling.

This is my honest to God critique. I think your idea is completely fantastic, and I stuck by you just about the whole length of the way. However, in regard to esthetics, you are falling quite short. It could just be mucho pixel fringe in your images but IMO, your cuts looks dangerously rough, the metal grate honestly looks slapped on, your drive bay looks slapped on, the paintjob on the plexi looks rushed and incomplete... I mean don't get me wrong. I'm sure you already have enough respect on this board to do just about anything you want and get away with cheers but are you claiming this as serious work or not. In other words, A. You are putting a lot of effort into this case and aren't particularly skilled with your tools, B. You are just throwing this thing together as a joke, C. You are just throwing this thing together as a conceptual building block, or D. I am sounding like a huge jerk right now.

Lmao did I kill this thread? I hope I didn't offend you, TGS. I've seen your other mods and you have done some absolutely fantastic work. I was just shocked to see how you were handling this one and wanted the skinny. Peace.

A lack of disrespect..?

C. You are just throwing this thing together as a conceptual building block,

I'm pretty certain that that's your answer. I think TGS just does these as a creative release and not for respect.

I'd say the answer is C. I just wanted to see it built. The fine things like nice cuts and a great paint job are just not important to me. I'm still waiting for the power button to arrive so it's still not done, but it's not gonna look much better than this. Sorry.

My next project: ProcBox will be totally different. It'll be on the same level as R2D2 and the SuperBee PC.

mod looks pretty good - not my kinda thing but its definately interesting and original!

H

P.S. It's pretty ironic how so many off-topic posts have been created - all because somebody misunderstood the whole hard-nipples thing and thought that it was off-topic! It's a witty phrase meaning 'thats awesome!'... it wasn't off-topic hee hee.

onelegout and razor, I will back you both up to my grave but I don't think it will matter. This seems like a square forum, I guess you just have to deal with it. Best thing at this point would probably be to drop it and take from the experience a certain knowledge that will help you avoid getting caught in the same situation. Remember, this community is moderated and controlled, which means you must live and play by their rules, no matter how silly they are.

to the above post by a.bird. I completely agree hard nipples from sexy case... But it is supposed to be clean. I'd say drop it, and enjoy the nice worklog.

On topic
TGS, looks great. I must put in though, the backdrop (dead mobo wallpaper) that's a true original, love it.

A suggestion. Try to get 2 tower speaker boxes, slap computers in each of them, with sound systems of course, and call them your media pc's. That would be awesome.

yeah thats actually what it reminds me of, cabinet speaker boxes (ghetto milwaukee of course). looks interesting, i see the quality isnt there, but you were proving a concept right?

is your next case (on r2d2 pc level) going to be like this or is it going to be more of a regular atx form?

Hmm... speakers are very strong magnets.... I mean, VERY strong magnets...
I wouldn\t want my pc hardware anywhere near one!

(actualy, my first mod had small speakers installed in the plexy!... but they were only 2" tweeters....)

shielded speakers?

i drove from the north of england to london once with my pc right next to my speakers and no damage was done, they were unshielded

Magnets won't affect the life of the HD, just the data on it (unless of course we are talking magnets strong enough to pick up the whole system). In most cases there will not be a problem with putting the speakers (unshielded) next to your computer since there is usually enough metal between the speaker and drive. Now set unshielded speakers next to a crt monitor and you could ruin the monitor (or at least screw it up temporarily...).

tgs, are you gonna put pins under it ???

i observed that a few times, why does it hapen, e mean i know it diverts the electrons, but why does it stay massed up after you remove the magnet

Can't wait for ProcBox TGS! Did you really say on the same level of quality as R2D2 and SuperBee PC?? SWEET! I LOVED SuperBee PC! Very cool!

Can't wait!

Oh.. and some criticism for you that I hope you take as a few kind suggestions ^^. I think if you would of painted the bars black they would of looked alot better. To me they blend in with the blue window too much and it doesnt really do a good job with contrast. But thats just my humble opinion and in any case you did a wonderful job in such a short time span. Keep it up!

I'm done, thanks for tuning in.

I actually thought it was a rather neat piece considering how little time you spent on it. Tossing it doesn't seem right.
I really liked the way you utilized the power supply and ups case.
Which reminds me, how goes the UPS mod?

Hey! TGS! 10 more posts until 666!

Anywho, if you're willing to ship parts from ThinnerATX to me (LED Fans, Drive cages, Mobo mounts, etc) send me a PM.

I'd rather see the parts put to better use than the trash, y'know?

TheGreatSatan
11-01-2006, 04:31 PM
I'm just tossing the overall case, not the fans, psu, etc.

Hey! TGS! 10 more posts until 666!

The whole 666 thing is meaningless. Nine is the lucky number.
