Right first off sorry for Project : Ipod Nano
Moving on!
My Grandma gave me a Sirius Victor 9000 computer today (and is crap lol)
http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?st=1&c=210
I have already dismantlled it and I am ready to build a brand new computer inside it. I have also took the monitor out of its case and I am going to replace that aswell.
Here are some pictures of the case clear out:

As you can see there is a heap load of space and a nice bit of room to custom fit a PSU in the back!
Should be a laugh
I will soon post some design pictures once complete!

not that i have problems loking at the pics, but could you make them smaller.. like reduce resolution to 50% for beeter quality.. plus there is arule about pixel size.. mainly, the noise annoys me (reminds me i need a cam too tho) :)
mod-related, do i smell an LCD somewhere? ;) uuu.. maybe some water cooling?
chedabob
09-24-2006, 02:08 PM
that is some ghetto pc. make your images smaller though. i cant see the full pics, and my monitor is 1440 pixels wide.
EDIT:
LOL "high resolution, 800x400"
you should totally whack an lcd in, ditch the mobos and crap, and put twin dvd burners where the floppy drives go.E
EDIT2:
OMG 2000 QUID!!!! Jesus.

dude, that is close to the first mod i was planning.
i smell much lighting and some funky water cooling in your future!

I have gutted the 5'25" floppy drives to fit the DVD writers into.

Hmmmmmm blue-ray sounds nice but at about £400 a drive I dont think so!!
Plus not many things read blue-ray discs do they?
More today hopefully (going back to my workshop about 7pm to gets some bits done plus some more designing!)
you oughta leave the old floppy drives in...and put some slot loading dvd drives in....that would be sick

The pictures bring back sooo many memories(good and bad). I had a NEW one of those on my desk at work, years ago. Got in trouble for tearing it apart to check it out.

Lol I would love to do the slot loading drives in the 5'25" drives and hae though about it. The design and fitting is easy but it is the price. I require 2 dvd rw (DL) which means (in the UK) about £81 each :o

Heres my idea guys with the motors!
I am going to mount them either side and basiclly create a pulley system that will lift the top (hinged) part of the case up to reveal the glowing inside! I am going to cover the inside with plexi so no-one touches!
Questions / comments please!

You really should watch that movie if you're making this mod LOL. Just my opinion, but I think you might take some inspiration from the 1983 big computer tech in it.

Right I am priming the case hopefully tommorow or sunday and painting asap but......I need a colour scheme - I have none. I thought about maybe a flat black with glow in the dark green graphics on the outside and a lime green on the inside.
I am going to be using a air compressor spray gun! So the paint needs to be kinda avalible.
Does anyone know where I can get some glow in the dark green from?

I think you might have a problem with your puley system. The physics are all wrong. The way it looks, you're going to be pulling it down towards your case...unless that's what you want? You could always put a strong spring to open it up and use a lock & pulley system.
Your call-but what you have, i can't see that working.

Any chance you could expand on this abit please Dave and maybe some infomation becuase I am still looking for ways to achieve the opening at the top!
Thanks

Hmm...ok. I want to see if this is possible to explain without sketches, so let's see how clear i can make this.
1) You have a hinge with a strong spring that lifts the lid under it's own force. Therefore, without adding anything else in, you now have it open. Now to close it.
2) You hook up a latch that will release while the computer is powered up. So from closed, power up. Latch opens, spring pushes up your lid.
So far, this is the easy part. Now you need to find a way to get the lid to close again after power off. There's a few ways of doing this.
3.1) You hook up a motor to some sort of pulling device (robe, bar, gearbox, whatever-it's the moot point) which pulls your lid closed after power off. Without main power, your latch is closed. Now, you can power a motor with the various points in the computer that provide power while the whole thing is turned off-there's 2 5 volt lines in the motherboard connector that can do this. Dissadvantages of this method are that there might not be enough power in these lines, and trying to draw extra can blow the internal fuses in the PSU or in the wall socket.
3.2) You get some capacitors to power the motor. As long as the power is on, the capacitors will charge. When the power is off, it flags a relay which allows power to the motor. This then closes the lid onto the latch.
4) When the lid is closed, it hits a switch, which stops power to the motor. In this state, the latch is closed as there is no power, the lid is closed, and the motor is off. Viola.
This isn't perfect, and could use some work. One person who's pretty damn good at this is CrazyBillyBob from these forums. He's always had helpful suggestions for me in the past when I worked on these systems.
Hope that helps!

Thanks alot dave very helpfull!
I will probably use the spring and hinge thing lol. I will proberly wire the motors for manual use though as I am not that good with circuits (but I am good at soldering!) so unless someone would be as kind to tell me what I need and how to wire it I think I will use the motors manually!
Thanks alot
DaveW
10-05-2006, 01:38 PM
Unfortunately, that's the problem with my method-it relies on the circuits. If you want a manual circuit, where you press a button...that's going to be a little different. The spring will not belp much...first, you need a way to control the latch. Or, alternatively, you can devise a system of up/down motors...hmm.
What have you got at hand? This might help with the eventual decision making. You'll need some kind of gearbox and motor, with some luck, 2 of the same to help with the weight of the piece.
Also, if you can post the dimentions of the door, the estimated weight of the door in Kilos, and what angle and direction you want the door to open till, I can probably talk you through some ideas.

Right I am finally back at work tommorow after my foot injury (now that it has healed) I am going to start mounting hard drives and stuff tommorow. Hopefully I will get the majority of the major metal work inside. Really looking forward to getting back onto the project.
I will keep you guys updated with pictures tommorow (high quality ones lol on the new 7mp camera :D)

I have been starting some more modding again!
This is a lunchtime post and will be updated at the end of the day aswell!
I started of today by makng a new bracket to hold my 200GB Maxtor Hard-Drive in the conveinent space that was left from where the orginal system speaker was :
http://www.hrstrailersmarine.com/tbcs/gaz_the_chav/1/100_0598.JPG
This is the orginal space where the system speaker was mounted.
http://www.hrstrailersmarine.com/tbcs/gaz_the_chav/1/100_0599.JPG
You can see here how the hard mounts perfectly into the space left.
http://www.hrstrailersmarine.com/tbcs/gaz_the_chav/1/100_0600.JPG
I started making the bracket by cutting a 100mm long thin strip of stainless (recycled!) then marking the middle (50mm). I then used my beastlly metal bender to bend the thin strip to a perfect 45 degree angle.
http://www.hrstrailersmarine.com/tbcs/gaz_the_chav/1/100_0602.JPG
Here you can see ma beastlly bending machine:
http://www.hrstrailersmarine.com/tbcs/gaz_the_chav/1/100_0601.JPG
Once the bend was completed I drilled two holes in the bracket to mount it to the case :
http://www.hrstrailersmarine.com/tbcs/gaz_the_chav/1/100_0603.JPG
Then I did the same in the case to find out that they matched up perfectly :
http://www.hrstrailersmarine.com/tbcs/gaz_the_chav/1/100_0604.JPG
So far so good lol!
http://www.hrstrailersmarine.com/tbcs/gaz_the_chav/1/100_0605.JPG
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now to start modding then back of the case a bit!
To start I have put cut some mesh to fit an 80mm fan hole and a hole undeneth it where some switches will be mounted.
http://www.hrstrailersmarine.com/tbcs/gaz_the_chav/1/100_0606.JPG

http://www.hrstrailersmarine.com/tbcs/gaz_the_chav/1/100_0608.JPG
Yet again perfect!! yay
That is it for the lunch time update. I am going to start painting the insides today if I get enough time.
Until then chio!

Anyways, so I did'nt get round to painting today but heck maybe next week. I have got one more little update for now...
I tac welded the piece of mesh over the fan hole and mounted the fan (to make sure it all fitted) and this is the result.
