I've had this idea for a while now, and it started to bother me to the point to where I started to put together a few things. This will be my second project (Project Trivium will have final touches put on this week). I just bought a few things off eBay :D, like a new mobo, RAM, and a 2.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor (socket 478 ). This full tower Micron case is HUGE. Its about 2 ft. by 2.5 ft. by 8 inches. It is the neatest case I've ever worked with because of all the detachable drive compartments (HDD, 3.5", 5", etc.). I have already begun on this new project. I am going to individually take apart each section and paint paint them silver, along with the outside of the case.

Here's some pics:
Case.

Here's a shot of the neat HDD doors hidden behind the cover(i'll fix it to have "hinges"):

Here's the HDD compartments (I'll get someone to make more of them for me...):

And here's the giant inside:

It is technically not a server, but it will have many of the same aspects of a server like:
Easy access drive compartments (for HDDs)
large storage space (400 GB)
Giant case (lol duh)
lots of HDDs (6)
Edit: The new mobo will be here in about 5 days, RAM about 1.5 weeks, and Processor about 1.5 weeks (if i get the highest bid lol)

Alright man, not to be a...NOOGE... but...
No matter WHAT you do to this case, when I look at it, I just won't call it a server. If you want a server, there has to be special affects to it.
Down at the shop, I have worked on many servers.
They use complex motherboards designed for 24+ hour use, Some of them arn't ment to shut off for about 10 years, i've seen. They have very affective cooling, ussually the case is big for this cooling to take affect. Not to mention parts are not only specially designed for the heat options, but are placed in a certian way so they don't cause as much heat.
-------------------------
I'm sorry man, Its just that Servers really get to me. If you're not ganna use that Mothreboard, Let me get it. I can do some neet stuff to it.

Im liking the passive heatsink...
...but my god that case is the ugliest mutha i've seen in while! It's a crime to NOT mod that thing!

I'm pretty certain that this can be done. It's not going to be a rackmount server, or a blade server (obviously). But it can be a pretty sweet microserver if someone who knows what what they want, and how to do it, can get that case into a decently equiped workshop.

lmao @ Dave. But I have a sort-of workshop w/ all the tools I need except a blowtorch (:p), but heres the list of materials I have or I can buy:
Have:
Air Compressor w/ cutting tool, blower, air drill, etc.
Dremel w/ all the things I need.
paint (silver)
Band Saw
Friend's small mill
Mountain Dew (wOOt!)
Can Buy:
More Paint (prob. metallic blue)
Sheets of Aluminum
Plexi (at a steal; lemme know if you want some, cuz its 1.47 for an 8"x10")
masking tape
letter stencils ( I can buy them or make them, depending on what purpose)
etc.
I've had a few ideas for this case, such as painting it (who likes a manila PC? lol) , stenciling out letters in the side and cut out the plastic, custom HDD cages, and other stuff.
Let me know if you have any ideas!
Hint: I am going to do something with that heatsink...

Do I see some nice lights?! I hope so
As well are you going to change the shape at the front (get rid of the spastic buttons 'n' all)?

wow. wow. wow. wow. wow. wow.
lol TOO MANY SERVERS!!! This isn't going to really be a server, its a kind-of server. It's going to have "blade HDDs", new mobo, CPU, and RAM, and a 400 watt PSU (^^ trade). But I was thinking of having 4 HDDs, CD combo, and such. I was thinking of keeping (and modding) the original Micron passive heatsink for originality and another idea I haven't told about yet...

LOL how many servers do they need :P
that's really not that many servers :P the place i used to work had something like 7 or 8 full height racks and a couple halfheight. and all we did was computational stuff
try to get access to a colo sometime if you want to see a room full of servers. or somebody's datacenter (that's probably a little harder :P)

A server serves. It doesn't matter what the hell it looks like, this is a modding forum for christ's sake. A server is still a server on the inside no matter what it looks like. You are all retarded.
Have a nice day. :p

OMgosh, I got the coolest thing to work. While working on my xbox, I stumbled across USB modding. I put one in my xbox controller, and could hook up ext. HDDs and things of that sort.
