OK so this is not a Modd idea but.......an idea none the less.

I think it would be awesome if there were a site that people accross the globe could use to organize modding communities in specific cities.

I just think that if there were a group of people in say Halifax NS Can. they would basically have no way of getting together and really taking this whole PC modding subculture thing to the next level.

I figured that i would consider writing and posting a site that would allow people to post to the page and I (or others) will filter and post regularily. The people in those communities could amass on there own accord and things would flourish.

And then again this could have already been done and i just have never stumbled accross it.
in which case someone please post a URL or something

OK that is simply a URL to this site im not an idiot and i was talking about people being able to come together in PERSON at group meetings and such were the group can work together PHYSICALY on differing projects. Maybe try assembling LAN parties that are also case offs.

This is basicaly how things like starttrek clubs get started and i see nothing on the TBCS main page that would allow Say John Doe to post on his own accord a get together at some place and have others also commit to going through posting aswell.

I don't trust any of you and if a single one of you shows up on my doorstop grinning like a maniac and wielding a dremel, I'll show you the business end of my garden hose.

Wait, no.

That's exactly the opposite of what I meant to say.

I like the idea of "modding parties" and such, and if someone wanted to organize one, then by all means do so. If you are too creeped out by potentially meeting internet people, then don't go, but I think that they would hold some promise. I just don't know how much you could get done at one - you'll end up spending more time hanging out and shooting the breeze than you would getting your hands dirty with a dremel and a can of Bondo, I'll bet.

I think its a good idea as well. Especially if someone in the Glagsow area has a garage full of high tec workshop equipment.

However I see issues in that

1. We may not have that much in common outside of this hobby, and may not like each other when other differences in interest become more prevalent.

2. Modding is something that up till now has been "me time". Perhaps this is just me, but I have other interests that get me out and about and meeting people. My work is people orientated. How would I feel about making the modding a social thing as well? Hmmmm Not thought about that before?

On the other hand, I would get a lot of pleasure say from making up a pcb for someone elses creation. Or working together with a group to make something that combined my talents with theirs...

I'm undecided in this idea, I see pros and cons.

There is a lot of overlap between modders and LAN partiers right?
And I think the LAN partiers are already organizied so use their infrastructure and you're bound to meet a bunch of local modders.

I googled lan party and my home town and got 300,000+ hits
including www.lanpartymap.com/ (http://www.lanpartymap.com/)

Why re-invent the wheel?

Another problem is that there are alot of younger people using this website (nothing wrong with it) but their parents may not like the idea of them meeting each other.

I agree with JustBlair on that Modding is 'me time'. But it's always good fun to have someone around to help you out with the boring stuff, like sanding and such. I usually rope my friends into this.

The only way to find out is to experiment. Go to a LAN party, find some computer case modders, and get a small collaboration going. It's the only way to find out if it's your thing.

I should point out that most modders will get some collaborations going-Crimson & Mashie have done some nice stuff together, for example.

well if we all did the FRAPPR (http://www.frappr.com/thebestcasescenariomodders), then we would know who were our closest friends... aka neighbors.... i do like the idea...

Im not against the idea either. Most of my friends dont see the point in making somthing so complicated (at times) for so little payout. I however enjoy tinkering with stuff and coming up with ideas. The finished product is allways sub-standard to my visualization. Another eye/brain in the mix might get the creative juices flowing. Another thing might be that the other person has allready tried a method and may have anyother way to go about it.

I would be up for hosting such an event for my neck of the woods but i live in an apartment and only have a few choice tools. Possibly another person with more space and a big heart might get the cahonas to host a mod party weekend or somthing.

There are groups as such but they are definately not the norm. One good example is The Austin Modders. Talk about a dream team, there is tons of talent in that group! If I was a little further south, I would love to just go to one of their meets and watch.:)

We have one comming up in October! (http://www.austinmodders.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1439)
;)

Thank you for the pimpage bro... make the drive down on a weekend, we'll make it worth your while!

I believe this next meeting is going to be another Mac mini/car integration session.

Yeah, I have to brag on the rest of the guys... AustinModders is (IMHO) the *most/best* organized group of modders anywhere in the world. We are honestly trying to organize even more! We are assisting with the Dell/Intel LAN happening in Austin over the weekend of Nov.10th-12th.

Zapwizard (wood iPod, Ammo case innovator and originator), Sheldog23 (the Martini mod, UnrealPC, as well as MKTB and his most recient stellar Project13), Mr.Red (Deja, and soon <hopefully> Deja2.0), Lancer (Harmony, and LANtrix), 486Hawk ("all in one" case), the l337 soldering skills of PoMan, OC and performance fiend Mickey21 (mightyMouse cubed and the recient Mac-Mini-into-a-brand spankin new Pontiac GTO), Fanatik (the awe inspiring miniG5ized and Soldam revamped) Tech-Daddy (yeah... me... cripes, they will let anyone in!), Spyd3r, MrArmyAnt, qoon, and our newest featured member... zittware (ATTN2Detail and soon to be a Infiniti G35 MacMini)...

This is the core group of AM (Man... I hope I did not miss anyone!). Most all of us are in Texas, and an even higher percentage live in the Austin, Texas area. I, alas, am a northern import (Dallas/Plano metroplex) and so is MrArmyAnt.

But we do try to have monthly meets, where we all get together and talk about either current problems on build we are on, or ideas for future builds. We all have our strengths, and we compliment very well with our diversity.

It is not easy to focus a group of modders (kinda like cat hearding sometimes! I know the guys will attest to that!) so if you do get a group together, loosely structure the meeting so that you can still enjoy each others company while learning everything you can from what the others have to offer. That is where our group really shines. We educate each other. It is a very relaxed atmosphere. I have learned a ton from everyone there, and I hope that I have contributed something back with my meager knowledge within that all star team!

Watch the site, and if you guys are ever in the Austin area... drop the AM'ers a post, and we'll try to hook up!

I know I have found 3 more guys from the mean streets of Carrollton that are modders...I need to track them down again! ;)

It will be in Minnesota, so all you dremel killers living in igloos... drop by when they open up shop!
