Hey all...I'm new here.

Just a quick one...

I have a USB IrDA adapter.
I bought it primarily for connecting my phone to my PC but now I am wondering what else I can do with it.

I was thinking of getting a remote control for my PC but I have no idea where to start with this project. I tried Googling for it but that yeilded pretty much bugger all!

Any other ideas or advice on my idea would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Pete

Well, you've got a couple of options here. There are not all that many remote manufacturers out there. Creative labs makes them for their Audigy line of cards, those would work with your adaptor, there are also IRDA compatable remotes for the Hauppage winfast line of cards. Viewsonic also makes an infrared remote designed for use on their LCD projectors. Same with INfocus. Any of those basic pieces of hardware, if coupled with a piece of remote control software will work.

If you have a PDA, there are also IRDA compact flash cards and programs to allow your PDA to work as a universal remote.

Some possibilities to get you started:

Alot of those may not come with software, but there are packages out there for that.

To be honest, if I wanted a remote for my PC, I'd buy an ATI Remote Wonder. The remote wonder uses a RF connection so it doesn’t need line of sight operation as an IR remote does. They do not cost that much and are way better than the "creative" remote I have for a PC which came with an Aud2 Platinum. Unless Creative has made major changes to their remote, it has low functionality... Don't waste your money on the creative remote.

$38 for the Remote Wonder II at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16880100402&ATT=Digital+Media+Remote&CMP=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r
