I was thinking of maybe doing a Battlefield 2-themed mod by turning an Aspire X-Qpack (that's what I have now) into a supply crate from that game. I can cover it in green cargo netting, etc., but I don't know how to get the wood finish effect like a crate. Any ideas?

I've also been thinking about doing like a midtower sized ammo box, hehe, any ideas there?

I have a few other ideas floating around, but I want something totally different than your typical top/side windows with etching and cathodes.
EDIT: I just thought of one.. using this case (http://www.silverpcs.com/product_info.php?products_id=378&osCsid=b8921bd3531e4f75fe40a4e55af98a98) and turning it into a yellow submarine.

The wood finish takes some practice to paint, so another option is to buy some wood veneer (shelf paper) and cover your case. That is the easy way out and if done right would look ok. I like the supply crate look.

Another option for a wood finish is to buy some thin boards (1x2 or 1x4) and figure out how to attach them to the case. Or just build a case out of them.
I'm not familiar with the game, but you'll probably need to put some dark stain on and weather the boards some.
Painting a wood finish isn't the easiest method, but it's probably the most fulfilling once you get it right. The only difficulty I see is that you might want some 3-d effects (splintered wood, frame of the box standing out further than the walls of the box, etc.) - that might be difficult to accomplish with just paint.
Do you have a picture of one of these boxes? Might give some more insight :P

Read down to where is says "special tools" i dont know the name of the device but it will create a wood finish on anything. I seen it on the home and garden channel many many years ago. They had used one of thoes devices to make a metal security door look like wood. I cant remember the exact name of it but i'll post back if i come across it.

Its really cool because its easy to make knots in the wood. Very very realalistic.
