Hey guys

Any ideas whether wiring this up as a power switch would work?

I was unsure as it is designed for 12 volts

If not any other suggestions

there is no direct link to item but it is the 3rd item from bottom

Thanks in advance

Remote Here! (http://www.xoxide.com/remote-12vdc-relay-kit.html)

What about these. The wiring is done for you or are you restricted to UK sites only???

The concept would work as long as you do wire it properly!

As long as the sites shipped to UK i dont see there being a problem.

Any input is appreciated

Keep it coming, there is no rush as can't really afford it just now anyway

First person to mention the flaw in both of those wins a cookie.

Hmmmmm is it the same for both??

I will take a guess though:-

Xoxide doesent ship to the UK (I just realised this!)

The other car one you have to wire yourself??

Lol just a guess

Nope. Here's the flaw.

Those act like switches. The kind that don't go back into the original position.

What does this mean? Well, since the power button is basically a momentary connection to relay a signal to turn on the computer, what you would get is the signal being constantly sent, which will be something like holding down your power button while you use your computer.

Now, I have seen what computers do when you hold down the power button. They tend to power on, flash the splash screen (the one that generally says your mobo with a fancy logo, you might have turned it off), maybe load a little bit more, then shut off.

So what you want is something that's momentary.

Both of those systems rely on a "press the on button and it stays on" sort of thing, which, as i explained, won't work.

I know a way that you might be able to make one yourself. Try making one out of a powered switch (note the power lol :p), Infrared receptor, and a programmable remote (or something around that).

it sounds like you basically just need to purchace a remote for your PC. I might be looking at this differently???? The biggest question is what OS are you going with. If you are going with Windows, then Media Center Edition with the remote might be a good choice. I have read some stuff about media center ed. though and it seems to be very propietory. Definatly do some research before you buy it. I hope this helps a little. Good luck.
