At long last I am thinking of upgrading my computer. Since I am on a budget it is quite hard to improve on my current system as new cpu, graphics card and ram has to be bought.

Any way Since Obilivon is such a graphics whore which compenets should I spend the most on. As I can only really afford a 7900gt what should I max out on RAM or CPU to get the most out of Obilivion. I was planning on only 1gb of ram though but I could be talked into 2gb if it will increase performance. Also I am leaning towards intel core 2 duo but not sure of which one.

Thought it may come down to most amount of power for least cash.

1GB of RAM should be fine in my opinion. If you get a conroe... well that doesnt really play into oblivion unless you are somehow multitasking. But while on the conroe subject... if you want more then buy less and overclock.

I run Oblivion on *low to medium* with 1.5GB RAM, 2.8 Pentium 4, and a ATI Radeon 300SE Extasy. Which is about thirty bucks by the way. The only time I have problems with running medium settings is when there is alot of magic use going on.

If you have the money, I would go this route...

Cheap Conroe OC'd, 1GB low latency/fast clock speeds RAM, And then that 7900GT. That would be in my opinion the best way to leech optimal performance and visual effects out of Oblivion. Anything more than that... is really for serious computer go'ers.

RAM can be tricky so make sure you get the right kind. That might not be what your system can have. You might have 184 pin or 240 pin, I dont know, those are 240 pin though.

If you need to go even cheaper I can do more research and help you with that. All you really need is a GIG of ram and that video card.

Thanks Mita this is what I was thinking

CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 $501.60
MOBO Asus P5N32 SLI DELUXE $395.00
RAM 1024MB CORSAIR VALUE SELECT PC-4200 $194.00
GPU WINFAST PX7950GT $427.00
Total $1,517.60
Prices in $AUS

The 7950gt are new they are a cut down version of the 7950GTX.
As the 7900gt is to the 7900gtx the 7950gt is to the 7950GTX

Edit: After shopping around a bit I managed to knock $100 off the price.

this motherboard has been pretty consistent in good reviews http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813136168

heck, for the money involved with that asus board, this is a solid competitor too http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128323 plus its a newer chipset than the nforce4 stuff.
