I am wanting to do a simple (or so it sounds) mod on an older Playstation 2. I have the PS2 standing up so what I want to do it cut a hole in the side, where it says PS2 and put a clear window in its place. I want to add some lighting though I am not sure about the availiable space. I am also wanting to add some additional cooling. The only thing is this, I am installing an Official PS2 40gig HDD. This is going to be located in the bottom (right side - if standing up) so cooling will be a priority. Please let me know if I am getting myself into more than I believe.

An alternative would be to purchace a clear replacement case and add the lighting. I can buy a USB powered fan that covers the front of the ventilation grill. The new case would cost $20 and the fan would cost $16. I am guessing that I would have to use lazers to get the lighting effects. I have a place where I can get them really cheap as well.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sounds cool, just be careful, and I hope you don't value your PS2 too much.... if you've ever taken one apart you will know that there are like 12 layers to it. I recomend taking pictures of every step along the way so you know how it all comes back together.

$16 for a fan!

You can wire up an 80mm case fan with LEDs. One of those shouldn't run you more than $5.00. You could wire a fan like that to a USB port if you wanted, USB has a 5v line. See what options the PS2's PSU provides.

You don't want lasers for your PSU. You want LEDs. Light Emitting Diodes. They are very cheap, and can be purchased online, I recomend eBay. They are very easy to wire, you just need to correct resistor. They are also low voltage and easily powered.

You can buy them at RadioShack, but for christ's sake DON'T! The LEDs at RadioShack SUCK unbelievably. I got 100 blue LEDs off eBay for under 10 dollars after shipping. I got 4 blue LEDs from RadioShack for a little over 10 dollars and they sucked so horribly I had to throw them out. Seriously. It's a HUGE difference.

Also, you could use cold cathodes for the lighting effects. They provide nice effects, but require a 12v line, I believe. Once again, you'll have to check out your console's PSU.

Here's a great video on console modding:
