What exactly do you mean by an extension. And what do you mean by "won't open". Do they open in a different program or just don't do anything when you double click them? Can load photoshop, go to File > Open... ? Tell us EXACTLY what happens when you try to open a file, including how you are opening it.

have you tried open with, or re-enable file extensions in windows, sounds like you've not given your file an extension in the first place...

to turn on file extensions
1) open up windows explorer (windows key + e)
2) click tools and select folder options
3) deselect hide file extensions for know file types

to add an extension to a file, right click on the file and select rename. then at the end of the file set it to .psd or whatever filetype you should have saved it as.

try this first ^^ rgr?

I've allways had that option set. It greatly reduces the chance of opening a potential virus. You can see if a file is a picture or an executable regardless if the icon is changed. Its usefull for webmaster aswell. Being able to change a text doc into a html file on the fly can be very handy.

I have a bone to pick with all the goody goody "average user" options. If you don't know how to operate your expensive equipment correctly, then you are going to run into some nasty bumps, i.e. viruses, spyware, etc. If you want to use windows efficiently, you need to really know how to use windows, and rome wasn't built in a day. It takes time to get used to all the little backends and such.

Completely agree. IMO, this is one way WinXP suprisingly excels over OS X. I've tried changing file extensions on a Mac and it can just really screw things up. Picture.txt renamed Picture.html is still a text file just called "Picture.html"... in windows that would be called "Picture.html.txt"

but trying to change an extension on a file can sometimes prove elusive....

Hey leprosy. You've got to deside which sig to keep. Having both sig's messes up the layout of the forums on smaller resolutions.
