I would like to know what i should go with.

4x 512mb ram sticks

or

2x 1Gb ram sticks

which would be faster?

speed? i think it would be relatively the same, but i would go with the 2x 1gb sticks. that way you have more room to expand, and you still get dual channel

I think that 2 512 sticks would individually run cooler, and thus be more stable, but would overall generate more heat inside the case. If you have good ventilation, then get the 512s, if bad, then get the 1024's.

the 1GB modules are starting to perform the same as the 512MB modules these days. i DO remember when the 512MB DDR stuff would run at 2-2-2-5 and the 1GB couldnt do that at the same speed... but now look. we have 1GB modules running at ddr1000 and 4-4-4-5 timings, and the lowest timings on a 512MB module are also 4-4-4-5 at ddr1000.

i would go with the two 1GB sticks. you get the same space, and probably the same performance. going with more than that will be expensive.

I am thinking about going with the

CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 433 PC 3500LL

Timing: 2-3-2-6

What do you all think

Get 2x1gigs. The'll preform faster with Dual-Channel and you have roomt to xpand. I wish I had gotten 1x1gig instead of 2x512, now I can't expand. To expand to 2 gig I need to buy 2 gigs instead of 1.

you might be able to do better than the corsair stuff. ill take a look around.

so this is the set you're looking at right now http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145032.

and this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231057 may be a better choice. g skill has recently proven to be a real performer in the high end ddr2 scene, and theres no reason to believe otherwise in this case. ddr500, good timings, and cheaper than the corsair stuff. win-win.

Has anyone used Gskill before and are they reliable. I think I might get 4 GB.

the reviews are good from the independent websites, and from the buyers' reviews on newegg. ive also heard through the grapevine that they are alright to deal with if you have any issues. lets put it this way... if something does go wrong and you make a big enough deal about it, they'll do something for you.

its kind of interesting. even ocz isnt competitive in the ddr500 area from the looks of it. they used to be up there on top for price and performance, and now they have neither apparently.

might get 4 GB. I don't think windows will recognise that much let alone make use of it. I think the 2 gigs would be fine.

4gb is fine with windows SP2. It's jsut with older processor espcially intels can't address that much ram. But with modern day systems 4gb is fine but its a bit of an overkill unless you do CAD work.

4gb all the way!! still not built my new system, but got my ram this weekend and just placed the order for the gfx card and mobo. i ended up getting OCZ platinum ddr2 pc6400 ram, the guy in the shop gave me them for the same price as the gold (i think he liked my ass!!) so that's not bad. my mate is now insanely jealous cuz last week he bought the gold stuff... now i got better for the same price!!
