My uncle has a laptop that he connects to a projector and for some reason he cant get his active screen to show up on the projector where as he could before? Anyone know the problem? We have tried extending the desktop but that isnt what we want or what he had before. His projector would clone his laptops desktop and project it. But we cant get it to do that anymore?

Ummm, could you post some more info? What you have now is quite vague, and I'm sure it would be a lot easier to help you if we got some more info.
Things like:
When it started happening
What he was doing when it stopped working
Projector info
Laptop info

It stopped working after we connected it to our TV with a VGA cable. We went under display properties and checked extended desktop and we changed the resolution so the screen wasnt fuzzy. Before we did that all we had to do is hook up the cable to the TV or the projector and it would automatically display the active desktop onto the TV or the projector. The Projector is a Plug and Play device. There isnt any software. My bet is that it is a super simple problem but we just cant figure it out.

I know my Dell laptop's monitor output won't work properly unless the lid is closed, but I'm sure your problem is not THAT simple

Right, He used to be able to plug in the projector and it would just display his active desktop. But now he cant even get a picture on anything like the TV or the projector without clicking extended desktop. Which is what we do NOT want. We just want it to project his active desktop like it did before.
Computer Model = HP Pavilion XT4300

Okay, well after playing around with it for about 3 hours he has just decided to take it in and have some professionals look at it and see whats up. Alot of things arent working on it so it needed a look over anyways.
Thanks for your help guys!

i think i know what's up with it...
hold the function button, then the one marked like a screen in between 2 lines. (usually on one of the function keys) that will cycle through which display methods to use. easy to miss!

Yeah I looked for that. We probably pushed "Fn" x "all the buttons" at least three times. His laptop is pretty old so I am not sure if it has that particular "Fn" + "Display Key" option. That or I am just blind as a bat. Or maybe.... gnomes snuck in during the night and painted over the key and then stole all of my cheese and continued to rub it all over their hairy little bodies before sticking it back in my fridge?!?
WTF?

Try this
Right click on desktop
Go to Properties
go to settings
click on second screen
click on advance settings and change the resolution to some thing low
