Why do we have AGP? Isn't PCI-E faster and better?? What are the differences between the two other than bus speed?

well AGP is older, so you should ask: why do we have PCI-E>> because is faster and better ;)
when it first came out i thought it was just a marketing move, i still dont know what to think

Theoretically PCI-E is twice as fast as agp(hence the 8x vs 16x). (or more depending on where you read it.) In reality it depends upon the hardware (mobo and gpu), and drivers (both mobo and gpu).

Are there any signs that PCI-E is replacing AGP? Or is this kind of like the whole BTX deal, where it was supposed to be the new industry standard but it never really took off.
-SF
AGP is still around cuz its so common.....i know a lot of people who have yet to upgrade to a newer system with pci e cuz that would require a full new system build....
its kinda like why we still have PCI video cards...

lol PCI GPU's... WOW
You know what the sad thing is... I need one right now! :dead:
As some of you know, for the time being I am on my dads computer... I tried installing oblivion and it didnt work. I am guessing because it has no video card. No big deal... I still have mine and at least ONE of the vga ports works. So I open up my dads case and you know what I saw? EXACTLY! I didnt see a darn thing! He has no agp or pci-e. I thought that was crazy! Go dell! lol

PCI-E is to agp what apg is to pci. PCI-E will eventually displace agp. I think it is next to impossible to find any new generation cards for agp. Although with a quick search you can get an ati x1600 agp card (no 1900) and you can get an nvidia 7800 agp card, but nothing higher.

well video card manufacturers are also supporting the switch by charging about double for agp cards :P
there is a visiontech ati 1300 that is pci.....i almost exploded when i saw it at compusa....
ive popped open 2 emachines...my moms..and my girlfriends....both only have pci slots

:p
What are PysX Processing Units?? I saw that in alot of the PCI video cards??

EDIT:
Like this...

it has a combo deal too?? So what? Can you combine that and a agp or pci-e or something??
from what i understand the physx cards are to take some stress off your gpu and it adds to effects.....like crumbling bricks...when you shoot a wall it falls apart....making gameplay more realistic...
the way i see it ...the physix card is kinda how the video card was for the CPU
just took away from what it does to make it run faster...if that makes sense
PCI-E was/is also supposed to eventually take over PCI64 in the server market to allow for more cards to use PCI-E. The idea is to revamp a very old card system with something that allows for some advancement.
The PCI Bus still runs at 8mhz, if I remember my a+ training from oh so long ago.

I personally don't understand why so many forums are having debates about this. I didn't read any pos here but I do have something to contribute to the topic title.
PCI-E is better in almost anyway. I am an AGP dude, I have liek 50 computers with a AGP and only one with a PCI-E. I'll explain it simply....
AGP = x4/x8
PCIE = 16x
You can figure out ze math.

I hear rumors about PCI-E 2? Anyone got anything on that?

I am still stuck on the AGP bus. As to upgrade to a PCI-E one you need new mobo processor and graphics card. And they are the three most expensive parts.

Just did a quick google so I dont know if there is anything better out there. This was the first thing I saw. Doesnt really say too much though.

dont forget the PSU, ATX II and stuff, 24 wire plug, SLI conectors;)

look at the page you linked :P the combo deal tab shows the combo. PCI physics card and PCI-E video card. $368.98. woo.
newegg does a good bit of these. sometimes they make sense, such as this one. i saw one the other day that wasn't quite as sensible - i think it was a hard drive bundled with a mid-range laser printer for 900 bucks or something.

Im fairly sertin that doesnt have anything to do with with the PCI-E grafix slot. Only the Peripheral slots.

the Physx processor doesn't realy work like that exactly...
In order for it' to be taken advantage of, the game must use the physx engine for it's physics. Because it uses a whole different engine to that of any non-physx-supporting games.
When its potential is released though, the results are mindblowing.

It does have to do with the graphics slot; it is being updated.

So do PCI-E grpahics cards need a special power plus cant they take a normal 4 pin molex?
TheMovement4

Some do, older ones Ive seen, but the newer ones take a 6 pin, like the 12v that goes into your motherboard, just add 2 more pins.

Again... That has nothing to do with the graphics card. That article is about the peripheral (expansion) slots. It mentions that they are working on a new graphics card bus to increase the power that comes through the slot so you might not need a special connector on your PSU for the high end graphics cards.
PCI turned into PCI-E 1x (working on 2x)
AGP turned into PCI-E 16x

AGP Has been around much, much longer, but more of the high-end (and now, middle-end) stuff is PCI-e. Hell, i'm running AGP at the moment, but only because to upgrade, i'd need a new mobo, CPU, and GPU, and that's kinda expensive (and possibly new RAM depending on the mobo).
