hey guys, I havnt posted in a while, mainly because ive been rather busy. As some of you *may* remember, i once had a rather annoying problem of my computer freezing rather often. The cause was unknown, and no reasons could be thought of because the situation was rather odd.

I could play any games fine with no problems of crashing in-game (besides the occasional game bitching bout something, but nothing out of the usual) but when i went to do anything other then game, such as talk to friends using msn, send or check my emails, or do homework, my computer would freeze frequently (especially when doing homework) (my parents dont really like this fact ;) )

No one could actually give any surgestions as to what could be wrong because if it was a hard drive problem things would be the other way around.

if it was a gfx prob, i wouldnt be able to play games
if it was a proc prob, i wouldnt be able to play games
if it was a ram prob, i wouldnt be able to play games
if it was a pretty much anything else prob, i wouldnt be able to play games

but tonight i have found something rather intresting that could be the cause of these problems. while casually browsing my System Event Log (as any bored person does) i came across regular entrys of a problem. & the time these problems occured were about when my computer froze. so i put 2 + 2 together & so i googled the error that i was getting. still no luck as there was multiple people that have had that problem but there has been multiple different things that were relating to it.

the error i am getting is:

ID : 7
Type : Error
Source : Cdrom
Description : The device, \Device\CdRom2, has a bad block.

I have found threads on sites for hp & daemon tools & thats when i got bored & thought i might as well make my own thread to ask you guys what you thought of this problem.

my computer is currently running:

P4 2.8Ghz
1Gb Corsair DDR RAM
radeon 9800XT 265Mb (flashed from a PRO)
1 - CdRW drive
1 - DvdRom Drive

i am also running daemon tools with 2 emulated drives if that helps

I would appreciate any help greatly as ive been having & putting up with the freezing for over 6 months now

Thanks guys,
- Jimmeh

Its amazing the problems you find when you try to solve something... Ive discovered that my DVD drive has crapped itself & my Cd-Drive is the cause of my computer freezing... This means that i have no DiskDrives, fun fun! :dead:

*SIGH* hopefully i dont have anymore problems any time soon... but i really need to upgrade this piece of crap  Its an allright computer, but its gettin a bit out of date & its got crappy speeds.

Hopefully after you get a new drive you'll be running smooth, hang in there as I know it's frustrating.

I have been plagued with CDROMs crapping out--even good brands have failed on me many times. Its really a gamble if you'll get one that will last for many years or one that will fail in a few months. It seems that the faster they become, the more failures we will see as the threshold of mechanical tolerance is reached.

CDROMS (and I hold this true for DVDROMS, BlueRay, HDD) are not as mechanicaly robust as Hard disks--numerous plastic parts and gears, miniature motors and the like are all subject to failure below its advertised MTBF or operating life.

Hope ya get it up and working.

Which is a real pain in the ass if you've modded it in any way...no warranty, and it means you need to mod the new drive as well, voiding the new warranty, etc....
